The effects of a low-reading comprehension on the performance of

Grade 10 students of DIHS

Statement of the Problem

The implications of low reading comprehension on "DIHS" students' performance could emerge as a crucial concern
in the educational system. As students progress in their academic careers, being able to comprehend and analyze
written information becomes increasingly important for success in a variety of subjects. However, a large majority of
high school students struggle to understand and interpret texts properly, impeding their academic results and
general educational development.

Despite efforts to increase literacy rates and encourage reading abilities, a significant proportion of DIHS students
(like myself) still struggle with reading comprehension. Being unable to grasp important ideas, infer meaning,
identify additional data, and create connections within texts poses considerable challenges in many areas of
academic performance. As a result, students with inadequate reading comprehension skills frequently struggle to
understand complex instructions, textbooks, and study materials and effectively participate in classroom discussions.

Low reading comprehension has effects that extend beyond English and language arts classes, impacting students'
potential to flourish in other subjects such as social sciences, mathematics, and science. Many high school curricula
require reading-intensive assignments, research papers, and standardized tests that require thorough
comprehension and critical analysis of written material. Students who do not have proficient reading comprehension
skills may fail to comprehend subject-specific materials, resulting in limited understanding, lower grades, and poor
overall academic achievement.

Furthermore, the consequences of poor reading comprehension extend beyond academic areas, affecting students'
lifelong learning, employment prospects, and personal development. Individuals with poor reading comprehension
abilities have difficulty acquiring and processing information in an increasingly knowledge-based society, restricting
their opportunities for higher education, career development, and informed decision-making.

Therefore, the purpose of this study is to examine the specific effects of low reading comprehension on the
performance of DIHS's students and identify the most effective strategies for addressing this critical skill and
promoting student success. By understanding the specific effects of low reading comprehension, educational
policymakers, administrators, and educators can develop policies and practices that support student learning and
promote academic and personal outcomes.
