OBJECTIVE To prevent injuries to employees and / or property damage incidents

 All scaffolding used on the Plant must conform to the SABS Code of Practice 085 of 1988, Construction Regulations 14
 All scaffolding will be erected under the supervision of a competent, trained and appointed (proof of training to be submitted) person who has
been appointed in writing by the Manager or Resident Engineer.

A SCAFFOLD FRAMEWORK

1.The user shall cause:


1.1 Scaffold stands to be firmly supported and secured against displacement and to be kept vertical.
1.2 Stands to be spaced not more than 1.8 m, 2.4 m and 3 m apart in case of high and low mass loads, respectively, if constructed from
steel.
1.3 Ledgers to be spaced not more than 2.1 m apart vertically.
1.4 Transoms to be spaced not more than 1.5 m, 1.8 m and 2.4 m apart in the case of high, medium and low mass loads respectively.
2.High, medium and low mass loads shall mean mass loads not more than 375, 250 and 125 kg/m2 respectively.
3.No user shall use, or cause to be used, any scaffold unless it is:
3.1 Securely and effectively braced to ensure stability in all directions.
3.2 Secured at suitable vertical horizontal distances to the object on which work is designed to be completely self-supporting.
3.3 So constructed that it has a factor of safety of not less than four.
3.4 Inspected by a competent, trained and appointed person at least once per week, after inclement weather.

4.Never erect a scaffold with parts from different manufacturers.

B SCAFFOLD PLATFORM

The following to apply to scaffold platform:

1. Platforms constructed with timer must consist of solid boards at least 228 mm wide by 38 mm thick.
1. Every board must rest at least at three supports.
3 (a) Every board must be securely fastened to prevent displacement.
(b) The platform overhang shall not exceed 250mm.
4 Boards must be placed in such a manner that tools and materials are prevented from falling through (kickboards to be fitted at all
times).
5 The working platform must be completely covered with planks.
6 Any platform which is more than 2 m above the floor or ground level is provided on all sides, except on the side facing the
working place with:
6.1 Substantial guard rails at least 900 mm and not more than 1 100 mm high.
6.2 Toe-boards, which shall be at least 150 mm high from the level of the platform and which shall be affixed that there is no open space
between the toe-board and the platform, will also be installed on the work face if the gap is of such width that material or equipment
can fell through.
6.3 All platforms must be kept free from waste, projecting nails or any other obstruction and is maintained in a non-slippery state.
7 A safe and convenient access must be provided. Ladders must be fitted on the inside of the scaffold framework with landing platforms
every 2,5 m. ladders to be staggered with a trap door to be fitted on the working platform.
8 Dismantling of scaffolding must be done under the supervision of a competent, trained and appointed person.
9 A competent, trained and appointed person must pass all scaffolding erected as safe.
10 All scaffolding must be entered in a register.

C INSPECTION

Inspection following a scaffold erection:

1. After erection, the appointed Scaffold Building Supervisor must inspect the scaffold.
2. Ensure it is safe and complies with Safety Codes, Procedures and Regulations.
3. Declare the scaffold safe for use by affixing SAFE TO WORK nameplate to scaffold.
4. Ensure that the inspection and every subsequent inspection are entered in a Scaffold Inspection Register.

D STATUTORY INSPECTIONS

1.A designated competent person will execute this task.


2.Be done at least once per week.

3.Following inclement weather.
4.When it is suspected that the scaffold has been damaged.
5.When it is suspected that the scaffold has been tampered with.

N.B.--- Working on scaffolding is classed as elevated work and all persons there for shall make use of a PARACHUTE HARNESS when working on a
scaffold.
