Malaysia has a multi-religious and multi-cultural society that basically lives in peace

and harmony. As we all know the first principle of the Rukun Negara is ‘Belief In God’, this
principle illustrates that the basis of religious life is an important principle of people's lives in
our country.

However, our society is sometimes faced with sensitive issues that can threaten peace and
harmony. The reason behind this problem is because of the lack of mutual respect between
each religion. We should have mutual respect towards others and not feel offended over
every little thing that is not included in the definition of our religion.

Mutual respect refers to living comfortably and contently among all faiths and recognising
each religion’s value for different people. Therefore, conflict will not occur and
discrimination between other religions will end if we respect every religion and cultural. A
harmonious coexistence of religion will result in a peaceful nation.

In addition, our society will maintain the strength of unity by practicing the spirit of
partnership, mutual respect and cultivating tolerance among Malaysians. Our society will be
more open to recognize and understand the diversity of religions in the country in order to
further strengthen understanding between religions.

It is against the human right to restrict or deny another from carrying out their beliefs or
rituals. Furthermore, our society have to learn to exercise mutual respect for each other so
that our country will be peaceful and harmonious.
