THE PROBLEM

Introduction

The internet and other screen-based technologies have become ubiquitous in our daily

lives, changing the way we live, work, and communicate. While these technologies have

brought many benefits to society, concerns have been raised about their potential negative

impact on our health and wellbeing, particularly on academic performance. In recent years,

there has been a growing body of research examining the effects of daily internet exposure

and screen time on the academic performances of students. Previous studies have found

mixed results regarding the relationship between daily internet exposure and screen time and

academic performance. Some studies have shown that excessive screen time can lead to a

range of negative outcomes, including lower grades, decreased attention span, and poorer

cognitive performance (Kirschner & Karpinski, 2010; Ophir, Nass, & Wagner, 2009).

However, other studies have found no significant relationship between screen time and

academic performance (Rosen, Carrier, & Cheever, 2013).

The purpose of this descriptive study is to look at the impact of daily internet

exposure and screen time on the academic performance of Grade 11 students at QNHS

(Quezon National High School) in Lucena City. The study's goal is to provide light on the

potential influence of excessive screen time and internet usage on students' academic results.

The study will take a quantitative approach, collecting data via questionnaires and academic

records and assessing the outcomes statistically. The findings of this study can help to design

guidelines and techniques to assist students in efficiently managing their internet usage. The

fast spread of internet usage and digital gadgets has changed the way people obtain

information, communicate, and interact with the world. As digital natives, grade 11 children
are constantly exposed to digital screens and spend a large amount of time online. Concerns

have been raised, however, about the possible influence of excessive screen time and internet

exposure on pupils' academic performance. The purpose of this study is to investigate the link

between daily internet exposure, screen time, and academic achievement among Grade 11

students at QNHS in Lucena City.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to investigate the effects of daily internet exposure and screen time on the

academic performances of grade eleven students. The research questions is as follows:

1. How much screen time and internet exposure do Grade 10 students at QNHS in Lucena

City get on a daily basis?

2. What is the relationship between screen time and internet exposure and academic success

in students?

What activities do kids engage in during their screen time and internet usage?

3. What are the potential benefits and drawbacks of screen time and internet access for kids'

cognitive capacities, attention span, and study habits?

4. Is there a substantial difference in academic achievement between pupils who have a

limited amount of screen time and those who have an excessive amount of screen time?
