Introduction
As per the requirement of B.Sc. first year Zoology practical according to
the syllabus of 4 years’ B.Sc. program of T.U, one day field visit at
Gokarna Sahid Smarak park and Garden was done. The main purpose of
this visit was to survey faunal diversity along with their habit, habitat,
identification and study of ecological values of invertebrates found over
there.

The Gokarna Sahid Smarak Park and Garden is situated in the

North-west part of Kathmandu. It is a one of the visiting destinations in
Kathmandu for us to identify and study different faunas as well as flora.

The garden we visited had a large ground with grass, trees and many
plants, so we could find different types of specimens for observation and
study. The entry price was also affordable which made the report writing
process economical.
This is the main reason behind why I have chosen this place for our
Zoology Practical Report.

5
Objectives
This study is designed to document patterns of invertebrates diversity
and community composition among the ecological habitats at the GSSP
garden. I have sought to discover which aspects of habitat structures are
associated with high levels of diversity. I also want to understand
how the ecological habitat contributes to the overall diversity of the
garden.

Furthermore, this report is highly dedicated to completion of our

Zoology course in the First year of B.Sc under the syllabus of T.U. This
report is the outcome of our GSSP garden visit. The main objectives of
our report relating to the garden visit are listed below.

● Objective 1: The report is prepared to make the study of diversity

found in invertebrates of the area.
● Objective 2: The report will identify and evaluate spatially
referenced diversity in invertebrates to help to compare them with
those present in other parts and around the place.
● Objective 3: To track if there is likely to be found some new
species.

Materials And Method
In this report various descriptions, terminology and abbreviations are
used to describe elements of the data or the source of data used in the
analysis. Furthermore, different materials and methods were used and
found to be helpful during the preparation of this report.

As our GSSP garden trip was decided, we planned to visit our study
place by means of locally available transportation by making a team of
students under the supervision of our engaged teacher as guidance to all
of us.The transportation facilities were easily available so we didn’t find
it difficult to reach there. After reaching the site we dispersed in the area
and made a clear study and collection of reports in the garden.

The different materials we used during our study was hand gloves which
made it easy to catch specimens throughout the place. Also we used the
reference book and internet to help us identify the specimen observed at
the site. We took photographs of much of the specimen we saw. Also we
were lucky to make a collection of them which we brought for our
specimen collection.

In total, past records and reports from different researchers found much
beneficial material which saw past data reference methods to complete
our report.

7
Observations
During the study period many species were recorded. Among them the
species which we can identify are listed below in the table.

a. Table 1: List of invertebrates recorded from the garden

S. Scientific name Common Phylum Class Order
N name
1 Anisoptera spp. Dragonfly Arthropoda Insecta Odonata
2 Apis mellifera Honeybee Arthropada Insecta Hymenoptera
3 Periplaneta americana Cockroach Arthropoda Insecta Blattodea
4 Culex spp. Mosquito Arthropoda Insecta Diptera
5 Pieris Butterfly Arthropoda Insecta Lepidoptera
6 Coccinella Lady bug Arthropoda Insecta Coleoptera
septempunctata
7 Pheretima posthuma Earthworm Annelida Oligochaeta Neo Oligochaeta
8 Helix Garden Snail Mollusca Gastropoda Stylommatophora
9 Limax Slug Mollusca Gastropoda Stylommatophora

The most widely found invertebrates were of Phylum Arthropods. Other

invertebrates such as earthworm, butterflies were also seen in some places.
According to the data, there were more than 200 species of butterfly and
varieties of earthworm, honey bee found. Similarly different types of dragonfly
were also found.

1. Ladybug
2. Dragonfly
3. Butterfly
4. Honeybee

1. Culex mosquito
2. Earthworm
3. Garden snail
4. Slug
5. Cockroach

Economic Value
We have had a survey on some arthropods, annelids and molluscs found
in the garden. The specimens found around there are of great importance.
Economic values mean both harmful as well as beneficial effects to
mankind and the environment. Some species such as Apis, Pheretima are
very beneficial to the environment as well as to mankind. But some
specimens such as Culex, Periplaneta americana cause different types of
diseases in humans. So invertebrates like insects, annelids play a
significant role in our daily life. Secretion of some insects are also used
for medicinal purposes.

The molluscs are also of great importance. Some of them are used as
food by humans and their outer shells are used as ornamental goods that
makes them a source of income. Molluscs are used as bait during
fishing. The hard shells of molluscs are used as buttons.

11
Discussion and Conclusion
Finally, we have successfully completed a day of field visit at GSSP
Garden as per the requirement for the completion of B.Sc. First year
Zoology practical. Although it was very difficult to study and research
about the habits, habitats of the specimens found there and to comment
on them and make a detailed report, the teamwork and cooperation
between me and my friends, teachers and guidance from the local
peoples made it possible. It was really difficult to collect some species,
so we collected some of them as the collection specimens for the
submission. During the survey, we found the varieties of
Arthropods(specially Insects) as the dominant phylum of invertebrates
followed by Molluscs by number. We also studied other phylums of
animals around there.

13
Recommendations
After the completion of the field trip at GSSP garden, I would like to
consider some points as my recommendations for the protection and
conservation of the faunal as well as floral diversity of GSSP
garden:
1. Community should be aware about the conservation of natural
resources.
2. The area should be cleaned by the locals and even the visitors
should be responsible inside the premises of the garden.
3. The area must be declared as a tourist area and research site.
4. Proper policies should be made for the proper utilization of forest
resources.
