1. INTRODUCTION:

Kingdom plantae is divided mainly into two subkingdoms: Cryptogams and

phanerogams, which are further divided into many divisions and sub
divisions.

Nepal is rich in plant diversity. It harbors abut 5, 309 angiosperms (flowering

plants), 26 species of Gymnosperms, 583 species of Pteridophytes, 1,217 species
of bryophytes, 792 species of lichens, 2,467 species of fungi and 999 species of
algae. With the richness of plant species there comes a threat of these plant species
being threatened and extinct because of their high medicinal, food and other
economic values. Plant conservation has become one of the burning issues in the
present context of our country Nepal. With these background some of the plant
conservation methods have been implemented by the Government of Nepal. They
are in-situ and ex-situ plant conservation. In-situ conservation includes
conservation in national park or community forests whereas ex-situ conservation
includes conservation in Botanical gardens, nurseries etc.

A botanical garden is one of the method for ex-situ conservation of plants. It is a

large area where plants of different types and areas are grown for scientific,
educational and conservational purposes. Modern day botanical gardens besides
many outdoor and indoor plants have green houses, research laboratories and
herbarium. There are 11 botanical gardens in Nepal. Among them, National
Botanical Garden at Godavari, Lalitpur is the main and central botanical garden of
the country.

As we read in our theoretical class that botanical gardens serves as a centre for the
conservation of many wild and cultivated plants, we proposed a field visit to the
botanical garden at Godavari to study different plant species conserved in that
garden and to understand what role the garden is playing to protect and conserve
those plant species.

1. OBJECTIVES

a. To study various plants housed at National Botanical Garden , Godavari

b. To study the different life form and diversity of plants in the garden
c. To understand how the garden is protecting these plants.

2.MATERIALS AND METHODS

Study Area
Fig: Map showing Godavari of Lalitpur where Botanical garden is located

METHOD:
a. National Botanical garden was visited and different plant housed
there were observed
b. Photographs of the plant specimen were taken
c. Field notes were prepared about the plants and plants were identified
as much as possible in the field with the help of tagging available at
each plant and with the help of our supervisor
d. Later after the field all plants were classified into different divisions,
families and life forms.

3. RESULT:
A total of ….plants were observed and recorded by our group from the
botanical garden which are further categorized into divisions, families, life
forms in the table below.

4. DISCUSSION
To utilize our theoretical knowledge practically through field work we visited the
botanical garden and we recorded many plants belonging to different groups and
life forms there. Many of them were taken from wild and cultivated there. Overall,
we observed diversity of plants in the national botanical garden and we found out
that the garden is paying full attention in terms of the conservation of plants
existing there even by cultivating some. It was observed that the garden is
conserving germplasm (seed) of many rare and threatened plants as well. Touching
or plucking plants are strictly prohibited there which also aids in the protection of
the plants occurring in the garden. Therefore, it was hence proved that botanical
garden plays great role in the conservation of plants.

5. CONCLUSION
We studied different plant species protected at the National Botanical
Garden and also learned how garden is protecting these plants. In this way
we learned that practically observing things what we learned in our class
adds a great and never fading knowledge in our mind. All in all this field
visit was very fruitful for all of us.
