1. Foreword
This project had been started under difficult circumstances (see also the IN-ALCC1 report).

In order for the mission to be carried out at all, a meeting with the new head of school of
Biodynamic Farming in Karur, Dr. K. Perumal, had been arranged on the sidelines of the
International World Congress. The reporter and Dr. K. Perumal missed each other (Dr. K.
Perumal had already left for Chennai on the 10th of November) and now had to create a
program via internet and telephone.

One reason was that the signer of the contract, Mr. Sundeep Kamath passed this order on to
Dr. K. Perumal without the necessary documentations. This was done later by the senior
expert, also with the help of Mrs. Kim Schneider from SES-Bonn. Finally the stay could be
extended by the senior expert until 26th instead of 21st of November 2017.

2. Introduction

The international meeting on the 19th IFOAM Organic World Congress at the India Expo
center and Mart, in greater Noida, India, was the starting point for the continuation of the
project. This program from 9th to 11th of November gave the opportunity to contact interests
with the senior expert. The project is in Kenia runs under the name RODI in Ruiru, Kenya (see
appendix 1).

The meeting with the representatives of the Biodynamic movement in Asia was another
highlight for the senior expert. This was very important for the understanding of the
situation of the Biodynamic Farm School in Karur. This meeting took place at the excursion
to Nainital, Uttarakhand.

3. OWC 19th IFOAM Organic World Congress
The senior expert focused on the events that reported on the situation of the seed from all
continents (see appendix 2). Here he was able to discuss the problems of seed breeding
under different climates and social circumstances. So he was also invited to take part of the
Pre-Conference.

5
He joined the working group under the title: ‘Seeds and Breed for Organic Agriculture’
on the 8 of November from 9am to 6 pm.

Opening of the 19th World Conference Organic Farming

The congress was a huge event. More than 2000 people participated in hundreds of
presentations, workgroups and lectures. At the same time Biofach India was organized and
even more visitors came to this fair. Here the senior expert visited the booth of Biodynamics
India and was informed about the work. The participation in this congress was exhausting
but very interesting. Of particular importance to him were discussions with representatives
of organic and biodynamic seed breeding and seed farming. The training for the Senior
Expert is considered essential for future projects to be well prepared. For the training of the
senior expert this event was very useful. For other projects, it is important to be informed
6
about new developments. This task was fulfilled particularly well by the participation in the
congress. Updates of knowledge are a necessary condition for new projects for the senior
expert. This is not a private matter of the senior expert.

The congress was continued with the general assembly of IFOAM from 12 to 13 November in
Delhi. The senior expert was invited by Mr. Sundeep Kamath to attend the general meeting,
too .

It was especially satisfying for the senior expert that the General Assembly unanimously
approved a petition for non-use of genetic engineering (including the new Genetic
Engineering Techniques {GE}). Over 400 delegates from all over the world clearly delineate
the non-approved techniques for the breeding of organic and biodynamic crops.

4. Excursion
The post-OWC tours were program of this event. The Senior Expert took part of tour no.3.
The tours were part of the IWC program and were booked in advance. The travel to reach
the project location was exhausting and tedious because influenza made it felt by the senior
expert caused by the extreme smog in New Delhi (see appendix 2).

Smog in Delhi November 2017 (source :Wikipedia)

We travelled from the Delhi smog in a group of 60 participants for ten hours on the road to
reach the SARG Training Centre at Manohar Orchards, village Supi, Ramgarh, Nainital at the
altitude of 2000 to 2400 m (see appendix 3).

View from the foot of the Himalayas of 2400 m altitude. The high mountains as “flying peaks”

8
The visit to the farm provided detailed information on the production of biodynamic
preparations, the care and preservation of mountain forests, the cultivation of fruit trees,
the cultivation and processing of vegetables and herbs. In addition, we were informed about
the education and training of farmers. The SARG training center has an important
significance for the whole of India because the farmers come from all states of India. On the
second day of the stay we had the opportunity to be informed about the work of farmers in
the area. The subsequent conversation was very enlightening. As it is known that the cows in
India have religious significance and cannot be killed, the question of the use of horns and
other animal parts for the production of biodynamic preparations arose. One farmer
answered this question: "If we transplant human organs from the deceased, we do not ask
whether this violates religious beliefs."

That was a remarkable answer!

5. Inba Seva Sangam (ISS) Annai Lea Residential Higher Secondary School and
the School of Bio-Dynamic Farming
After the travel to the airport of Madurai, the senior received a warm welcome and was
driven to the destination. The meeting with the entire teaching staff and subsequent visit to
the school garden proved to be very informative and led to a deep and shared discussion.
(About the schools and ISS see appendix)

Office building of Inba Seva Sangam

As a result of these discussions, the senior expert took on the task of establishing contact
with a former colleague of the Waldorf School for future cooperation with the Annai Lea
Community School.

6. The School of Biodynamic Farming

The following visit to the Biodynamic Farm School was impressive.

The Establishment of the Bio-dynamic and organic farming school collage in Vinobajipuram
was at 11th of July 2012. Since then there were successful two-year training courses and a
new 6 month course started on 2nd October this year.

There are 16 students in the course.

The reception by the staff and the students was very cordial and provided a good basis for
the subsequent cooperation.

12
The director agreed with the senior expert to supervise the on-going lessons for a week.

The curriculum included instruction on the reproduction of the crop and an overview of
breeding and seed production. The teacher was M. Sc. Ag. Sujit Chakarbarty. He taught all
day from Monday to Saturday in English. As some students did not speak English, a
graduate from the last two-year course translated it into Tamil. The seminar was enriched by
practical exercises

.
The translator had a lot to do

After each lesson, there was a training analysis and a joint conversation with the teacher
about the observations of the senior expert during the lesson.

Practical instruction for the examination of the flower structure

It showed that Mr. Chakarbarty knew how to use a variety of methods and very sensitively
perceived inattentiveness on the part of the students and addressed them directly when
needed. Rarely, when his enthusiasm for the content to be communicated became clear, this
proved to be understandable weakness, in that no favourable change of method was made.
All in all, the methodical and didactic approaches of the teacher were repeatedly praised by
13
the senior expert. The senior expert largely abstained from influencing the lessons directly.
He only occasionally added additions to the content. The seminar was intensive and was
attentively perceived by the students. This is also a merit of the teacher and his way of
teaching.

Another task was to talk to the school administration about setting up future courses. Here,
the senior expert supported the teacher's view that future students should be accepted not
only from the region but from all over India.

For this reason the mastery of the English language is a prerequisite.

There will be further negotiations with state agencies to set up recognized degrees at the
school. A study time of different length will be possible and is sought.

Teacher, Senior Expert and Manager of the Bio-Dynamic Farm School

after the session on the future design of the school organization

Maybe there will be three-year training in the future. The six month course could be
possible, also. The offer (length of courses with completion) will depend on the negotiations
with the state authorities. The work on the curriculum will depend on the length of future
courses. The Senior Expert is ready to cooperate in the future (about the history see
appendix 4).

16
7. Conclusions
After a long period of uncertainty as to whether this project could be successfully carried
out, a good deployment option finally emerged, which could be fully exploited. (See
appendix 5) It was an intensive week with the teacher and students.

The senior expert sees this successful engagement as a start for longer-term collaboration.
He wants to focus on working with the Biodynamic Farm School. For the work at the Annai
Lena Community College he will work hard and make an effort to get a former colleague
(Waldorf teacher) for this work. As soon as there is a commitment, he will recommend the
colleagues to the SES for cooperation.

Inba Seva Sangam (ISS) Annai Lea Residential Higher Secondary School
and the School of Bio-Dynamic Farming
ISS is based on Gandhi’s ideas about nonviolence and all people's well-being, indifferent to
their race, religion, sex or political views. ISS’s main objectives are to work for rural
development in the nearby small villages. The organisation was founded in 1968 by a group
from the gandhian movement together with a Belgian woman named Mrs. Lea Provo. The
organisation is located in Tamil Nadu in South India, about 40 kilometers from the city of
Dindigul (between Madurai and Trichy).

20
The organization work for the rural poor's rights and to enhance their social and economic
status. ISS also seeks to promote an ecologically sustainable way of life. ISS target groups are
mainly orphans and vulnerable children, vulnerable women and poor peasant families. The
organization runs two children's homes (with a total of about 200 children) and one school.
ISS owns and runs a biodynamic farm on 13 hectares along with a botanical garden and
nursery area for the conservation of species. It has a network of contacts to the organic and
biodynamic organisations across the country, and it leads Eco clubs at about 140 schools and
300 Self Help groups for women in 70 villages in the area where they work with training and
micro loans.

Sevapur

The village Sevapur was formed in connection to the Indian land reformation “Bhodan land”,
which gave casteless and untouchable people land to live on after Mother Lea had begged
the local rich landowners in the area for it. About 140 families live today in the village of
Sevapur. The other village, Vinobajipuram, is situated 30 km from Sevapur. About 70 families
that came to the village in 1986 live there. Many families were Tamils that had been
deported from Sri Lanka and others came from the surrounding villages. ISS received land
from the Indian government, which they gave to the families.

Community

Our founder mother Lea Provo had established a community house at the time, of her
ideology towards communal harmony and brotherhood living among staff members, social
workers and the general public. The community centre have facilities to accommodate about
25 inhabitants at a time and the place want to strive for an organic outlook in all aspects of
community life.

Small Farmers Empowerment Program

The Small Farmers Empowerment Program is a SIDA financed project in collaboration with
the Association SOFIA. The project has a 10 years perspective and started in 2008 and is
scheduled to be phased out by 2018. The project aims at empowering 150 poor farmer
families to take control of their livelihood and family support system in a democratic,
ecological and sustainable way and inspire other farmers of the entire Kadavur Panchayat,
an area of around 200 hectares to do the same. Promote organic farming and get 100
farmers ready for organic certification. Restore 100 hectares of eroded land and create self-
help groups/bore well groups for the 100 farmer families who own this land. Involve
Government Forest Department in the watershed management of the area. Create
awareness about Environmental issues and HIV and health issues in the villages in the
project area.

21
Organic and Biodynamic farming

ISS has been working with organic cultivation in 31 acres since its inception and the farm is
certified as conforming to Indian NPOP standards of organic agriculture by IMO Bangalore.
There is a small dairy unit in the farm. Milk, vegetables and other food grains are produced
for the consumption of the community. ISS is making efforts to attain self-sufficiency in
producing milk and organic vegetables for the community. Paddy and other food grains are
also produced for the consumption of the community. This farm produces various Organic
fertilizers, pesticides and weedicides for its own consumption and that of the community.
The Farm has 12 heads of cattle including 5 Cows and 7 Calves. During the year vegetable
cultivation was undertaken in 10.5 acres of land to cater the needs of the Boys and Girls
homes and the community kitchen. 12 Compost and 17 CPP pits were maintained to meet
the manure requirement of the farm. The farm was visited by many national and
international guests.

Annai Genetic Garden

Mother Lea Provo started the garden in 1994 to promote the concept of living harmoniously
with nature. W.W.F and WELEDA Belgium helped to form this herbal garden. All kinds of
Medicinal plants (251 varieties) are available in the form of trees, crippling plants; Root
based Plants (sedi) in the Garden. A nursery too is raised and during the year 5000 saplings
were grown. A Siddha doctor and one assistant and a few workers are taking care of the
Genetic Garden and medicine preparation unit. The Sangam has also started manufacturing
herbal medicines in a small way. It is one of the information centers on Conservation of Bio-
Diversity and Sustainable utilization of the resources for those who are learning medicine
and Environmental Science. Annai Genetic Garden continued to provide the Raw material
required by the Siddha Unit and also produced natural manures to be used in the garden.
Besides, ISS also initiated Beekeeping in the garden during the year with 10 Boxes. Many
students of nearby schools, colleges, farmers, foreigners and general public continued to
visit the garden.

Siddha clinic and medicine production Unit

ISS is maintaining a Siddha herbal products production units and it is functioning at Kadavur
building. The body care products like tooth powder, bathing herbal powder, hair oil, well
known health enhancers and different herbal powders are manufactured in the units. The
unit produces 13 different types of products and the required herbs are collected from the
Genetic garden. All the products are produced to be used for our boys and girls students and
also to sell to the surrounding area.

Women self-help groups

Inba Seva Sangam involved women empowerment programmes for the past 15 years,
Strengthen the role of women, through promotion of self Help Groups with savings and
credit programme supported by bank linkages. The aim is to enhance their opportunities to
22
become economically independent and self-reliant. There are 350 groups having 4000
members. They are functioning in 80 villages in Kadavur region. Promoting different
handicraft practices and villages based different small scale industries like animal husbandry,
organic biodynamic farming, mushroom cultivation, weaving and tailoring practices and
through this practices improve their livelihood.

Annai Lea Residential Higher Secondary School

Annai Lea Higher Secondary School is situated in Sevapur, which is 3km away from ISS head
office. This School is being run by ISS and approved by the Tamil Nadu State Goverment.
There are 250 children studying in the School from standard 6 to 12. The School strives to
provide not only quality education but also values in life

Annai Lea Boys and Girls Home

All the Children studying in Annai Lea Hr. Sec. School are residing at Annai Lea Boys and Girls
Home and pursuing their education. Warders and residential teachers are taken care of the
Children. Special attention was given for Children who needs special coaching. Along with
regular School programme students are provided moral education; sports, music, drawing,
English literature, Yoga, organic farming, mushroom cultivation, tailoring and computer
education to enable Children to acquire special skills in life. Yearly Summer camp is one of
the ISS initiatives to create a platform for the children to develop personality and other skill
activities.

Vinobajipuram

The village, Vinobajipuram, is situated 30 km from Sevapur. About 70 families that came to
the village in 1986 live there. Many families were Tamils that had been deported from Sri
Lanka and others came from the surrounding villages. ISS received land from the Indian
government, which they gave to the families.

Balwadi and community centre

The Balwadi (preschool) is situated in the middle of the small village and it has 15 children in
the age 2-5 years. Lata is the teacher and is teaching the children to read, write and math
and she invites the trainee to bring songs and games and handicrafts. This is an offering to
engage in the mornings from 9am until 1pm. During this time there is a lot of possibilities to
play and engage with the children. In the evenings the school turns to a study centre and the
evenings can be an opportunity to offer activities like spoken English and handicrafts and on
Sundays there can be space to create activities for fun and play.

23
Women handicraft

In the afternoons there can be a possibility to turn the Balwadi into a women's handicraft
centre. Here there is an opportunity to exchange knowledges. This is also a wonderful
opportunity to create relationship to the people of the village.

Waste management

Waste is a huge challenge in India as in the rest of the world. In Vinobajipuram there is an
opportunity to explore how to integrate sustainable waste management systems in rural
areas. A pilot project started with the Internship year of 2014 together with the students at
Bd school. There is a setup with recycling bins in the houses connected to the BD School.
Here is an opportunity to follow up the setup of recycling and waste management routines
for the community and village. A connection is settled in the village of Tharagampati to sell
the waste of metal, glass and hard plastic. The paper can be recycled in the village to
become paper, art and handicrafts. Follow-up initiatives taken to create monthly Waste
Rallies in the village.

BD school

There is an urgent need for trained young people to heal the land, therefore ISS has
established the Annai Lea Community college and School of Biodynamic Farming. Hence, this
school has been promoted where students are offered a residential 2 year Diploma
certificate in Bio -Dynamic/ Organic farming, with an emphasis on all- round development &
employability with the aim of healing the Mother Earth through organic and Biodynamic
Farming methods. There are 6 academic terms of 12 weeks duration each during the 2 years.
Medium of instruction is Tamil.

A movie from the Bio-dynamic Farm school was produced and can be seen here:

https://www.facebook.com/samenwerkingsevapur/videos/1004997822977436/

Inba Seva Sangam's Biodynamic Agricultural School team in Vinobajipuram made this video
last year to promote the school.

There are already two classes (batches) that have their diploma and are all at work: BD7 and
BD12, named after the number of students.

In May 2017 they would like to start with a BD20 group. Our secondary school Annai Lea in
Sevapur has been farming for two years during the last two years of secondary school. More
young people are getting ready for an agricultural job.

Sponsorship remains necessary. As a sponsor you can sponsor a pupil in the BD-School and
costs 500 Euro per year, in the Annai Lea School a pupil costs 288 Euro.
