Section D: Understanding regarding Peace and Tolerance

What are the challenges to Peace and Tolerance in Pakistan (Maximum 300 words):
Pakistan being a part of Third world is facing multiple problems in different aspects of life, and the worst condition
for peace and tolerance in the country is also a part of this unending list. According to a recent report by Human
Rights Watch (HRW) Pakistan is a hub for humans rights violation which includes force conversion, force
abduction, sectarian violence, rising wave of hatered against particular sections of the society, and many more.
Rapes, disappearance of political and social workers, killing of Ahmedis and shias on the base of their believes,
and suffocation for freedom of speech have became the identity of this country. Particularly, in Ghokti, Tharparkar
and Badin many young girls are forced by molvis to embrace Islam which is the core issue in this regard. Another
example by which we can feel the level of hate in this society is- a lecture of Atif Mian a renowned economist was
scheduled by IBA Karachi, but later on the university administration was forced to dismiss it on the threats of
extremist forces. Honour killings of women are also a major factor in Sindh which have made things worse.

After 2013 in the name of counter terrorism operations the military agencies had crashed the civil rights, and
done blunders as for as human rights are considered. The students, lawyers, civil right activists, and now women
are also being abducted by them in the day light. Dawn newspaper had published some days ago that 4 young
men from same house are missing in Balochistan because of their political affiliations. With this, the attitude of
police, FC and rangers with general masses is simply humiliating. The peasants, students, teachers and political
workers are considered as colonial subject in the country.

How can we deal with these challenges. (Maximum 200 words):

As we have discussed challenges to peace and harmony above. Now I would propose to present some solutions.
Because challenges demand solutions. First of all , I think, Relegious scholars can play foremost role in mitigating
intolerance and hatred. More enlightened scholars should step forward to preach meassage peace. And state
should discourage hate driven Mullahs like Khadim hussain Risvi. Additionally, state needs to keep an strict eye on
madarsa education and should add courses of comparative relegions to spread harmony. Next to clergy, school
education can also play pivotal role in preventing hatred. Secular syllabus need to be designed. This will assure
that diversity is embraced instead of being discouraged.

Problems such as forced disappearance and forced conversions can prevented if strict laws are introduced
to reduce interference of extremist and undemocratic forces in state affairs. National assembly, commission for
human rights and minority affairs commission should come forward and work collaboratively to devise new laws
to resist aforementioned problems. People like Mian Mithu and Ayub Jan Sarhandi, who encourage forced
conversions should strictly be punished. Members of civil society, progressive political parties and human right
activists should come up with practical plan to uproot these evils.

Section E: Transfer of Learning

Please give the example (s) how the learning gained from the PCPT will be put into practice in the work of your
organization or at personal level. (maximum 300 words)

I have always been enthusiastic to contribute positively in society. I also enjoy to have sufficient space where I
can contribute for collective good. But, problem that I’m facing is that I lack theoretical knowledge, and exposure
to diversity. During the session I will get opportunity to interact with celebrated scholars, peace apostles and
diversified participants from across the country. This will equip me with well organized framework of tolerance
and harmony which I can forward to people around me. Additionally, my residential experience with diversified
community will also impact my way of thinking and personality greatly.

The environment even in English department of Sindh University, as I have experienced during my campus life, is
suffocating. When students of literature who are often considered peace preachers are intolerant, other parts of
society can be bigoted beyond belief. But I have always aspired to shift the trend. Therefore, after returning from
session I will arrange various seminars, dialogue sessions and gatherings to promote pluralistic values within
campus. As I happen to be a tutor also, I will forward the leanings to my students. Moreover, I often deliver
lectures in my previously attended college, secondary and primary schools on my visits there. So, I can
conveniently convey my gained experience and knowledge from the session. In doing so, I will seek help from my
fellows as well. In this way my learning will be utilized productively.
