Communication in the Workplace

College of Allied Medicine

Tolentino, Katrice Jade E.
BSMLS 2-1

Both of the videos presented at our LMS impose a great message and a powerful impact
to the minds of young individuals to prepare ourselves to the reality that awaits in the future,
ourselves as an employee, and as an adult. The video highlights some of the workplace problems
that is very inevitable, which is backbiting, gossips, and judgements. Due to these practices, the
work environment we belong become more toxic and unbearable. But thanks to these 2
phenomenal speakers, they presented a modern-day solution to a modern-day problem.
Glenn D. Rolfsen talk focused more on changing the work environment if it is unhealthy
not just for yourself but also to others. Honestly, even if I’m just a student now, back-biting and
gossips happen and it somehow delivers a negative energy that affects our mind and character.
But in reality, you cannot gain something from it, maybe you just satiate your superiority complex
just to make yourself mighty to the public. And it is truly saddening because some make a habit
for it. I believe that if everyone watched and understand Mr. Rolfsen speech and impart the
lessons throughout their daily lives, I believe that these negative practices would not be more
tolerated. Just by watching his video, I can feel the impact of his words and somehow relate to it
because I myself practice gossiping. His words open my mind for the wrongdoings I have done
and felt the urge to change those for the betterment of the environment that I belong to. Also, I
would probably share the triple-filter test not to mock or make myself smarter but to raise
awareness that backbiting and gossiping is useless. I really enjoyed Ms. Louise Evans speech
because it somehow reminds me of the self-help books that I’ve read, the way she tells the story
and connect it to the lesson that she wants to convey is very effective and somehow pique my
interest. Her speech circulates around the 5 chairs that will affect how we will handle a certain
situation. To be honest, I always judge how person reacts or behave in front of me along with it
is I also assess myself, sometimes I think that this is my toxic side. I always fought with my siblings
because of the way I view every situation that I’ve encounter. I’m always mad, close minded, and
aggressive in expressing my opinions that’s why it creates misunderstanding and I think that
these 5 chairs will help me to change it. I considered myself sitting always to the red and yellow
chair. Just by understanding the different concept of each chair little by little, my perspective in
handling things and situation change.
I thought that the videos presented would be boring and uninteresting, but it proves me
wrong since I acquired a lot of lessons that I could instill and practice to my daily living as a
student, a friend, and as a family. Negative practices mentioned earlier cannot be easily
eradicated, but by being aware to the solutions and things that we could have done, even if we
are the first one to do it, we must not hesitate and be the start for a change. Educate and share
this information to others to raise awareness on how we should perform ethically and right inside
the workplace and also on how we could handle challenging situation or events we could
encounter. I’m not aware that such gem exist that could definitely change someone’s life and
perspective, truly I’m grateful for this course for this one because this kind of matter doesn’t
discuss at school. Through this reflection paper, I was able to assess my own characteristics and
my weaknesses as a person. Indeed, both of the videos presented could definitely affect on how
will I communicate inside the workplace.
