Lieselotte
is travelling to Switzerland
When the postman is on winter holiday, then the post cow
Lieselotte does not need to work either. So the farmer’s wife
goes into the village every few days to pick up the mail for
the farm.
Upon returning from the village today, the farmer’s wife
excitedly runs into the cowshed, «Look, Lieselotte, the
postman has written you a card from his ski trip!»
Lieselotte is looking at the photo on the postcard with sur-
prise – there is something she has never seen before: such
high mountains! And so much snow! However, Lieselotte
has so far never been skiing and wonders, whether that
would even be possible with four legs.
«This looks like it is certainly very pretty also in summer...»
the farmer’s wife dreamily says. «Nothing but juicy, green
meadows full of flowers ... and the sound of cow bells from
miles around.»
The farmer’s wife turns around and is surprised: «Why are
you packing your backpack, Lieselotte?»
Gondola
Actually Lieselotte would have liked to climb Männlichen just like
the local cows, but as a lowland‘s cow such a climb is a bit too
burdensome for her. So today the Männlichen cableway is making
an exception for Lieselotte, by allowing a cow to also board a
gondola.
The Männlichen gondola cableway has been taking visitors up to
the summit station 1,288 metres above Grindelwald Grund for
over 40 years. The original Grindelwald – Männlichen gondola
cableway was built in 1978 and was the world’s longest at that
time! This record has, however, since been broken by several newer
cableways. Meanwhile, the Männlichen cableway has given years
of faithful service and has been replaced by a new, modern 10-sea-
ter gondola cableway so that cows and other vacationing mountain
adven-turers can travel up Männlichen faster and more easily.
Therefore enjoy the ride with Lieselotte in this new panorama-
gondola. Do you see the lush pastures, which are home to the
Grindelwald cows, and behind them the mighty Eiger north face?
1 Welcome to Männlichen
Lieselotte the cow has heard a lot about Grindelwald. For a long
time she has wanted to see the high mountains with her own eyes
and get to know the animals that live here. Join Lieselotte and the
chickens on their mountain adventure. You can get both the ticket
and the Lieselotte hiking map right next door at the ticket counter.
Set out in search for rock crystal, practice your first sounds on a
real alphorn, try your hand in the «cow milking competition» or
survey the famous Eiger north face like the real alpinists. At two
barbecue sites you may also make a fire and grill sausages or
campfire bread. The actual hiking time to Holenstein intermediate
station is approximately 1.5 hours. However, with so many games
and fun things to do, any efforts of hiking are quickly forgotten.
And after an exciting day on Männlichen, you can experience many

2 Start – Let’s go
For now though, enough with the playing and sliding: let’s hike!
Lieselotte is already waiting excitedly to experience new adventu-
res. But before starting your hike you still need to place your map
between the belt strap in box 2. This gets you a further solution
letter.
3 Alpaufzug - Procession to the pastures
In the bend, four cows are coming towards Lieselotte. She is delighted
to hear their splendid sounding bells. These bells help the cows
with orientation: they will always know where the other animals in
the herd are. Moreover, it makes it easier for the cowherd to find
stray animals. It is customary that the herd’s leading cow carries a
larger bell than the others. Before you move on, punch box 3!
4 Speichersee - Water reservoir
In this reservoir, the people from the cableway collect water in
order to be able to generate snow for the ski slopes in winter. Now,
in the summer, the reservoir is refilled. «Perfect for a little refresh-
ment,» Lieselotte tells herself and jumps into the water with an old
tractor tire as floatation ring. Actually, swimming is not allowed
here, but for Lieselotte we shall turn a blind eye this time ...
The chickens accompanying Lieselotte could do with a moment of
refreshment too. However, because they aren’t ducks, they don’t
dare to go into the lake. They prefer to have a shower to cool off.
Help them to freshen up! To generate enough pressure, you have to
pump as hard as you can.
5 Wetterunterstand - Weather shelter
Lieselotte is amazed at how quickly the weather can change here. If
the clouds are black and the mountain peaks suddenly shrouded
there might soon be a storm, heavy rain or thunder and lightning.
Then one is really glad about a safe retreat. This can be vital,
especially for climbers or mountaineers. It offers protection if
they get caught in a thunderstorm. Inside some of the climbers’
equipment hangs on the wall. Do you know why it is all needed?

6 Eigerblick – Eiger view
In nice weather you have a good view of the Eiger north face
from here. Lieselotte wonders why there are such high mountains
here and not where she lives. It can be difficult to imagine, but
200 million years ago there was a big ocean that also covered this
place. That is why you sometimes find fossils of shells and corals up
here. 100 million years ago this rock was pushed together and
folded by the movement of tectonic plates. The highest peak
that Lieselotte has seen so far is the dung heap on her farm. The
chickens climb it like daring mountaineers.
7 Murmeliturm - Marmot tower
Do you see the towers of the cable car? Marmots particularly like
to rest on their warm concrete foundations. With a telescope you
can get a much better view of the animals.
Best be quiet, marmots have very good hearing and eyesight. If
danger approaches, they whistle and disappear very quickly into
their burrows. Before autumn, the marmots have to eat a lot to
become fat, so they will not get hungry during their long hiberna-
tion. During the cold season, the marmots then cuddle closely
together in their burrows and sleep for six months. Here the punch
nibbles at box 7!
8 Picknickplatz - Picnic area
The perfect moment for a rest! With its stream and soft mossy
ground, this is the ideal place. You can also scoop up the water here
and put it back into the stream. «Finally, a break!» Lieselotte
thinks too, trotting off contentedly to the picnic spot. Once you’re
ready to go again, you can head off on a treasure hunt. The chickens
have heard about a mysterious mountain treasure that is said to
be hidden here in the forest. If you follow the clues from the local
forest animals, you might find it. To do this, you first need to look
for the rabbit. He is sitting not far from the firepit in the forest –
he’ll give you the first clue.
Toilette - Toilet facilities
Cows also need to do «number ones and twos», which you have
probably already noticed when spotting cow dung along the way.
However, Lieselotte prefers to use proper toilets.
9 Weitsprung - Long jump
Here some local mountain animals are competing in the long jump.
A frog, a squirrel, a rabbit and a fox are showing off their skills. The
frog can manage at least 50 cm. But the best jumper is the fox.
This helps him when chasing his prey in the forest, which mainly
consists of small rodents such as mice. But he also eats frogs,
rabbits, fruit and even earthworms. On farms, foxes are not popu-
lar because they also prey on chickens and geese. «Well, good that
he is busy jumping ... », the chickens are relieved while watching
the action from a safe distance.
Would you like to try the long jump yourself? Can you make it as far
as a squirrel? Or even as far as a hare or fox? Once you have
punched the solution letter in box 9, you can continue to hop, skip
and jump to catch up with Lieselotte. She has already gone ahead
and got herself into a predicament.
10 Moor - Bog
Lieselotte was a tad careless and has sunk into the marshy ground
a bit. What a quagmire! It is not so easy to get out again. How good
that the chickens can help. What’s up with this ground?
Here you find yourself on what is known as an «upland moor».
These areas are very rare and therefore protected under nature
conservation laws. Here only plants that love the wet ground and
do not require a lot of nutrients can grow. These include mosses
and lichens, cotton grass, sedge and sundew.
The peat soil in an upland moor is formed from dead plants and
only grows about one millimetre a year. Cows may not graze here,
and you should also not leave the path so that the soil is not
damaged. The animals that live here have adapted to the barren
conditions. These include Alpine newts, grass frogs, dragonflies and
marsh grasshoppers. In box 10 you will find a further letter for the
solution word.
11 Alphörner - Alphorns
Are you interested in trying to play an alphorn? Carefully place
both hands around the alphorn, then blow strongly into the
mouthpiece. You will notice that it takes quite a lot of breath,
especially if you want to produce higher tones.
Alphorns used to be made from spruce trees growing on the hill-
side, which gave the instruments their bent and slightly crooked
shape. The chickens have already gone into hiding from the loud
tones. Can you find them? Inspired by the music, you can now
punch box 11.

What’s Lieselotte up to here? She’s supposed to be on holiday!
The forest workers who felled the trees are happy to be given a
hand. Lieselotte is a huge help when it comes to pulling the thick
tree trunks over the narrow forest paths.
It used to be pretty commonplace for cows to pull heavy loads.
Horses were mostly used in Central Europe but poorer farmers also
used oxen or cows to transport loads. Sometimes even dogs were
harnessed up by small traders to move smaller amounts.
Today, however, people prefer to use a tractor to transport the
heavy loads through the rough terrain when doing forest work.
Once the logging was complete, a lot of space was freed up in this
clearing. Here’s a viewing platform that gives you a great view of
the beautiful landscape. It takes you closer to the treetops, so you
can get a close look at the trees.
13 Fotopoint - Photo point
Lieselotte has reached the end of her hike. Today she roamed over
beautiful meadows, meeting fellow cows and even marmots. And
would you like to know what she enjoyed the most? Then check the
solution strip on your map ...
If you separate the strip with the answer and hand it in at the
valley station, you are going to receive a gift in return. And what did
you like best on the trail? The alphorns? The marmots? Or maybe
the cable car? For now, Lieselotte would like to rest a little. After all,
