DESTILATION PROCESS

Figure 2 shows an illustration and a series of tools from the distillation process. The
distillation process is a method of separating or purifying a mixture based on differences in the
boiling points of its components. This process exploits the volatility or ability of a substance
to evaporate at a certain temperature.
The distillation process generally involves heating the mixture in a device called a
distillation column or distillation furnace. When the mixture is heated, the component with the
lower boiling point will evaporate first. The vapor is then condensed back into liquid by
cooling, and the condensate is called distillate.
In the distillation column, there are several trays or plates that allow for more efficient
separation. The steam that rises to the top of the column will interact with the liquid that flows
down the tray. This process allows the heavier or higher boiling components to return to the
liquid and flow downward, while the lower boiling components rise to the top of the column.
Distillation is often used in various industries, such as the oil and gas, pharmaceutical,
chemical, and liquor industries. The distillation method can also be used to purify water or
obtain products of desired concentrations, such as alcohol in liquor or petroleum into various
types of fuels.
Distillation principle:
1. Evaporation
Evaporation is simply defined as the removal of a solvent as vapor from a liquid.
In this process the liquid or solution to be separated is heated so that the part of the liquid
that has a low boiling point will evaporate first.

2. Vapor-Liquid Separation
With high pressure, the vapor that is formed can already be seen separating from the main
liquid. This steam will undergo further processing.

3. Condensation
Condensation means condensation. The separated water vapor is condensed and collected
in a separate container. In a simple experimental or research laboratory, you can collect the
condensation results in a distillate flask. Thus a pure liquid compound or a more volatile
solvent fraction has been formed.
