Chapter-1 Introduction

Communication has played an important role in our lives since it started to


evolve. It is important because it develops a feeling of understanding among
individuals. The methods of communication is still evolving and it is a continuous
process, scientists are always keen on discovering methods on how to communicate
with higher efficiency. From sending messages on foot to the evolution of the internet it
has evolved significantly though it is still an ongoing process. Solving problems,
sharing ideas views and expressions reading, writing would have been impossible
without communication. Knowingly or unknowingly we have been using different
communication techniques that has helped us deliver almost everything and made our
day-to-day lives very simple.

Chapter-2 History of Communication

Cave paintings, hands and gestures were used as the earliest forms of
communication. The first printing press system was developed in 1440 by German
Johannes Gutenberg. The newspaper started to get  more attention and it was a great
revolution during that time. We have all seen somewhere in the movies people sending
messages through pigeons also known as carrier pigeon. Roman military were the first
to adopt it and used them to share information among army. In the past Africans used
drums, the people in the US and China started communicating by sending smoke
signals, it is known that people used smoke signals to mark their territory and warm
others of potential danger. ( ) Early typewriters were first seen during 1575 but in
the year 1873 Sholes and Glidden invented a typewriter which became a commercial
success. After the invention of print media, radios were invented; it became a source of
news as well as entertainment for people. Modern postal service began in 1600’s which
made communication simple and easier. During the 1790’s, the first fixed semaphore
systems emerged in Europe. Later on as people became aware of various methods to
communicate thus, a secret way of communication was initiated which we call by the
name of ‘Morse Code’. It consisted of dots and dashes which required specially trained
individual to decode the messages. Alexander Graham Bell introduced the first
telephone in the year 1876. Japan was the first to research and present an idea about
moving picture or television. During the 1900’s America and the United Kingdom were
researching on how to video-telephone after a vast research and development John
Logie Baird and the AT&T labs along with Philo Farnsworth developed video-television
system for the general use. United States became the first country to launch a
communication satellite in 1958. The first email was exchanged in the year 1971.
Landline phone service already began in 1900’s however, mobile phones was
introduced in 1973 and there was a significant change in the mode of communication.
People used hot air balloons to deliver messages at a distance and the first airmails were
delivered in 1911. After the evolution of mobile phones SMS service was developed by
Neil Papworth at Sema Group Vodafone. After mobiles were developed communication
became very easy but still people were looking for other ways to communicate and
WWW was developed in the year 1983. Mobile phones and internet telephone for
example Yahoo Messenger, Skype became widely popular during late 1990’s and early
2000’as internet was available to general public.
