Lesson 2: Dots and Ties

The DOT
Dot - it is a small spot or mark placed on the right side of any note or rest. It increases the time value
or duration of the note or rest by half of its original value.

Dotted Whole Note

1. The value of a whole note is 4 counts.
2. The dot’s value is half the value of the whole note which is 2.
3. Add the value of the note and the value of the dot.
4. A dotted whole note has duration of 6 counts and is equivalent to three half notes.

= = 6 counts
4 + 2 2 + 2 + 2
Dotted Half Note
1. The value of a half note is 2 counts.
2. The dot’s value is half the value of the half note which is 1.
3. Add the value of the note and the value of the dot
4. A dotted half note has duration of 3 counts and is equivalent to three quarter
notes.

= = 3 counts

Dotted Quarter Note

1. The value of a quarter note is 1 count.
2. The dot’s value is half the value of the half note which is 1⁄2.
3. Add the value of the note and the value of the dot.
4. A dotted quarter note has duration of 1 1⁄2 beat and is equivalent to three eight
notes.

= = 1 ½ counts
Dotted Rest
Just like the notes, rest can be dotted too. The value of a dotted rest is increased by half of its
original value.
Dotted whole rest
1. The value of a whole rest is 4 counts.
2. The dot’s value is half the value of the rest which is 2.
3. Add the value of the rest and the value of the dot.
4. A dotted whole rest has duration of 6 beats.

= = 6 counts

Dotted half rest

1. The value of a half rest is 2 counts
2. The dot’s value is half the value of the half rest which is 1
3. Add the value of the rest and the value of the dot
4. A dotted half rest has duration of 3 counts and is equivalent to three
quarter rest.

Dotted Quarter Rest

1. The value of a quarter rest is 1 count
2. The dot’s value is half the value of the quarter rest which is 1⁄2
3. Add the value of the rest and the value of the dot
4. A dotted quarter rest has duration of 1 1⁄2 counts and is equivalent to three eighth rests.

Illustration of Dotted Note and Rest Values

The Tie
Another way of altering the duration of note is through the use of a tie. A tie is a short, curved
line connecting two notes of the same pitch. When two notes are tied together, the duration or time
value of the notes is combined, thus creating a longer sound.

A dotted half note has the same duration as a three tied quarter notes.

Multiple notes of the same pitch names can be tied. In playing or singing a tied note, only the
first note is sung, played, or sounded and held continuously for the duration of all the tied notes. Study
the piece below.
