Dotted Half Note
1. The value of a half note is 2 counts.
2. The dot’s value is half the value of the half note which is 1.
3. Add the value of the note and the value of the dot
4. A dotted half note has duration of 3 counts and is equivalent to three quarter
notes.

= = 1 ½ counts
Dotted Rest
Just like the notes, rest can be dotted too. The value of a dotted rest is increased by half of its
original value.
Dotted whole rest
1. The value of a whole rest is 4 counts.
2. The dot’s value is half the value of the rest which is 2.
3. Add the value of the rest and the value of the dot.
4. A dotted whole rest has duration of 6 beats.
= = 6 counts
A dotted half note has the same duration as a three tied quarter notes.
Multiple notes of the same pitch names can be tied. In playing or singing a tied note, only the
first note is sung, played, or sounded and held continuously for the duration of all the tied notes. Study
the piece below.
Dot – a small spot or mark placed at the right side of the note
Tie – a short, curved line connecting two notes of the same pitch
names.
