IV. LEARNING PHASES AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES
I. Introduction (Time Frame: Week 3)
In this lesson, you will be able to learn and identify textures from musical examples.
Texture refers to how a wall, entity, or material feels to the touch in general. It refers to how many voices or
instruments communicate a composition of music. It may also apply to the overall sound quality of songs.

There are three kinds of musical textures in terms of voice:

• Monophony or monophonic texture- is composed of one melodic line and has no accompaniment. This is
called unison. (one/solo voice)
Example:
The Philippine National Anthem or any song is sung in unison or an acapella (singing without musical
accompaniment).

• Homophony or Homophonic texture- has one melody and sung with accompaniment. (one/solo voice
with accompaniment)
Example:
A song is sung by a singer accompanied by piano or a guitar.

• Polyphonic texture – uses two or more melodic lines sung together. It may be in a form of a round, canon,
or partner song. (many voices such as duet, partner song, or round song)
Example:
A choir sings Hallelujah with four voices as Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass.

Same with vocals, texture can also be applied in instrumental music.

There are three kinds of musical textures in instruments:

• Monophony or monophonic texture- is composed of one melodic line with no harmony or counterpoint.
(one instrument)
Example:
a flute and drum corp, with all the flutes playing the same melody
• Homophony or Homophonic texture- has one melody and played with other accompaniment. (one
instrument with accompaniment)
Example:
a small jazz combo with a bass, a piano, and a drum set providing the “rhythm” background for a trumpet
improvising a solo
• Polyphonic texture – uses two or more melodic lines playing together. If more than one independent
melody is occurring at the same time, the music is polyphonic.
Example:
most music for large instrumental groups such as bands or orchestras is contrapuntal at least some of the
time
