CONCEPT NOTES:
Elements/Characteristics of Music
• Melody – series of tones/notes that satisfying to a listeners’ ear.
• Rhythm – a strong repeated pattern of sound
• Texture – is how the melody, harmony and rhythm are combined together.
• Harmony – is sounding of notes/tones together or combination of tones.
• Timbre – is also known as the tone color or tone quality of a musical note.
• Dynamics – is the variation in loudness or softness between notes or phrases.(ex. p-soft, pp-very soft,
f-loud, mf-moderately loud)
• Tempo- is the speed of the beat or the pulse of the music.

Guide on how to localize a song.
1. Poetic Translations – most common road song translators take in order to give a good a good quality
translation of the song in another language. The problem with this type of song localization is it is not
always accurate and close to the original.
2. Word -for-word Translations- aim to translate each and every single word of a song in order to bring it
close to the original version of the song as possible. These kinds of translations completely disregard
grammar and phonetics.
The best thing one can do in order to create a beautiful translation of the song is to start out with a word-for-
word translation, but then incorporate elements of the poetic translation in every part which doesn’t seem to
make a lot of sense. Try to always keep the basic meaning of the song intact but you will come to find that some
parts can simply not be translated accurately in another language as they will end up changing parts of the song
in order to fit in.
EXERCISES/ACTIVITIES.

1.Using this sample music sheet of Pilipinas Kong Mahal, localize this song. Translate this into your local
dialect. Write your translation on the space below the original lyrics.

3. How did you come up with your translation of the song, what were the steps you have done?
4. What challenges did you meet while doing the translation?
5. Perform your localized song and record it through a video for submission to your teacher.
(if you cannot do a video recording, we will just for the time when students will be allowed to come to
school to do face-to-face performance.)
