Sad news from Mowsbury Golf Club

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I write this month’s
Newsletter as Pam Coombs sadly passed away on Friday 26th May
following a short illness. Pam was a longstanding member of Mowsbury
Golf Club and was always ready to step in when required, so much so that
she took on the role of Lady Captain not once but twice. She was an active
lady and liked to join in many competitions and events to support the club.
For many years Pam also organised an away week each year to Stoke by
Nayland, and she also enjoyed many golfing trips abroad with the ladies.
These events will not be the same without her.
Pam was known throughout the Bedfordshire County Golf community and
enjoyed playing her Past Captains Matches and many other County events
over the years. Those of you who knew Pam will know she enjoyed many
social activities apart from golf, these included bowls, painting, gardening
or just sitting with a friend enjoying a cup of tea in her lovely garden. Pam
had travelled extensively throughout the world and loved her cruises.
Pam was a lovely lady and will be missed by all Mowsbury Members and
many more besides. Pauline Hargreaves

NEWS FROM OUR CLUBS FROM BEDFORD AND COUNTY GOLF CLUB

The first of the three Bank Holiday Mondays in May would see our
annual Jim and Caroline Dell quaichs competition. Despite the
poor forecast the weather was lovely and 20 pairs set off in
sunshine. They both have trees planted on the course in their
memory and both were decorated with pink tulips and pink ribbons
on the day.
The bottle raffle raised £220 which will be donated, along with
some entrance monies, to the Cynthia Spencer Hospice which took
care of both Jim and Caroline. To continue the Scottish theme
Chef James served Cullen Skink before the prize giving.
The winners with a great 42 points were Gary and Bev Law, just
pipping Shelagh Cormack and Robert Costello who came in with
40 points. Both the men’s captain Lloyd Wardall and Ladies
Captain Debbie Newnham-Davies were on hand to present the
quaichs.

MORE FROM BEDFORD AND COUNTY GOLF CLUB
To mark the occasion of the Coronation of King Charles
111 we chose a fun competition where groups were
chosen at random for the day and a crown would of
course feature - with each member of the groups of 4
players able to choose 2 holes where they would wear the
crown – their score would then count double. So many of
the teams said they had “chosen the wrong holes on the
day” but one team got it all right and came in with a
wonderful 95 points – Derek Cormack, Claire Cummings,
George Breadon and Angie Grafton.

On the eve of the Coronation the Ladies gathered for A Right Royal
Day Out, Ladies Captain Debbie Newnham Davies’ Away Day, May
5th. at Market Harborough Golf Club. Our day began with
complimentary quiches, coffee and small gifts from the Ladies
Captain - the Queen of Clubs! Market Harborough is a beautiful
parkland course with fabulous views and some watery challenges.
We thoroughly enjoyed playing and would definitely go back.

Other awards went to the ‘Queens of

Spades', receiving large packs of
Coronation Chicken crisps, as they had
dug themselves into bottom place and

May 12th would see the annual Ladies Past Captains get together
for both a competition and lunch. Past Captains who have moved
away are also invited to return to the club to play in the competition
and/or just enjoy the meal which makes it even more special.

The scores were tight with Angie Tatum-Hume coming in with 27

points, but the trophy would go to Pat Anderson who picked up one
more point to finish on 28 points. Pat is seen here receiving her
trophy from Past Ladies Captain Elaine Thornton.

NEWS FROM SOUTH BEDS GOLF CLUB
Belated congratulations go to South Beds Golf Club Ladies champion
2022 Michelle Fontaine-Geary. This win made it a hat trick of
championships for Michelle previously winning in 2000 and 2009.
PLAYING AROUND AT PIDLEY
South Beds working ladies had the opportunity for a weekend
away trip for the first time. Lakeside Lodges at Pidley was the
chosen venue and proved to be a great choice, ten ladies
enjoyed two days of great golf, wonderful food and
accommodation. The course had seen a lot of water prior to
arrival which made it challenging but it didn’t prevent the
ladies enjoying themselves. It was also an opportunity for the
ladies that are unable to play during the week to mix with some
ladies who don’t have to worry about the 9-5 anymore. A great
success and thoroughly enjoyable.

BCGL Senior Women – County Matches – players needed.!!

The following match days have been organised against Senior Ladies from other Counties

13th July 2023 Beds vs Suffolk at Ipswich Golf Club 12noon

20th July 2023 Beds vs Cambs & Hunts at South Beds Golf Club 12noon

10th August 2023 Beds vs Bucks at Pavenham Park Golf Club 12noon

25th August 2023 Beds vs Northants at Staverton Golf Club.

Most matches are played off scratch with the exception of Northants who play of handicap. Don’t let ‘scratch’
put you off as many other teams field ladies up to 18/20. It is a great experience and a brilliant way to meet new
people and play different courses. If you are interested and would like to play in any of the above matches
please contact Helen Taylor by email : helenjtaylor@me.com
