Dancing, as a physical activity, can also cause some


injuries such as cramps and sprain. So, as you learn the
basics of dancing, you should also learn
how to perform basic first aid procedures to remedy
dancing related injuries.

Part of avoiding injuries is to monitor your heart rate


before and after any physical activity so that you may not
exert too much energy which could also lead to injuries.

after you perform a physical activity. Indicate also the RPE

Activity: WHAT WOULD YOU DO?


Directions: Below are given situations that occur
during dancing, try to think of a method on
how to approach the circumstances to avoid
further injury. Answer briefly in your PE notebook.
A. A friend of yours is dancing energetically and
suddenly stumbled upon another dancer causing
your friend to have a swollen right foot. What would
be the best thing to do in this situation if you already
have the knowledge on how to provide first aid?

only to witness a dancer who has been injured in
his left knee. What do you think is the first thing to

What is It
FIRST AID FOR DANCERS

As you perform your dance activities you need to be


mindful on how to avoid further injuries and provide first aid
when a fellow dancer is injured. Conditioning and injury
prevention techniques have been studied for many years
so that choreographers and dancers may become more
aware of the safety precautions of dancing.

FIRST AID

All dancers need to remember the acronym


PRICED – an invaluable first aid guide to the immediate
treatment of injuries.
PROTECTION: Remove additional danger or risk from
injured area.
REST: Stop dancing and stop moving the injured area.
ICE: Apply ice to the injured area for 20 minutes every two
hours.
COMPRESSION: Apply an elastic compression bandage
to the injured area.
ELEVATION: Raise the injured area above the heart.
DIAGNOSIS: Acute injuries should be evaluated by a
health care professional.

Avoiding further HARM


In the first few days after an injury, remember to avoid
HARM.
HEAT: Any kind of heat will speed up the circulation,
resulting in more swelling and a longer recovery.
ALCOHOL: Alcohol can increase swelling, causing a
longer recovery.

RUNNING OR OTHER EXCESSIVE EXERCISE:
Exercising too early can cause
further damage to the injured part. Exercise also
increases the blood-flow, resulting in more
swelling.
MASSAGE: Massage increases swelling and bleeding into
the tissue, prolonging recovery time. Immediately
after an injury occurs, dancers can use the
PRICED method to decrease the local
inflammatory process and protect the injury prior
to seeking medical care. During recovery, it is
crucial that the dancer remembers to focus not
just on the injured body part, but to care for the
entire body.

Waltz dates back to the late 17th century and


originated from Europe, but has never really been
out of fashion and clearly stood the test of time.
Waltz is a closed position dance to be
performed in triple time. In layman's terms, this
means that the partners both hold and face each

other while dancing to a rhythm of hard-soft-softhard-soft-
soft.
It is a smooth and graceful dance with long,
flowing movements, characterized by rise & fall motion.
It has a unique 3/4 timing and a simple rhythmic pattern
