According to the famous scout motto, “BE PREPARED” which means you are always
in a state of readiness in mind and body to do your duty. We are all called to be prepared at
all times and in different situations; this module contains information on the “functions of
dressing and bandages” and “explains the principles of wound dressing”. There were
activities intended for the learners to help them fully understand the topic and would make
them realize the use of this in a real life situation.
This module is divided into different parts wherein you can learn through connecting
every small detail in a form of activity that is related to the lessons and eventually become
greater learning in terms of post assessment outputs. The main concern of this module is to
help the following:

For the learner:

To be fully aware on the functions of dressing and bandages as well as on the steps
and techniques in applying dressing to a wound. On the same manner the learners will have
an idea on how to explain the principle of wound dressing and how to take actions in
responding to a real situation such accident in many kinds and different unexpected
calamities that may happen.

For the Facilitator:

This module will give you the idea on how to implement and facilitate learning on the
topics: “Function of Dressing and Bandages” and “Principles of Wound Dressing”. As
teachers we can use traditional ways of learning such as discussions, having individual
activities and giving post assessment in conducting the lessons. But always remember to
give most of the time for the learners to do their responsibility to discover new learning.

The following are the lessons contained in this module:

1. Function of Dressing and Bandages
2. Principles of Wound Dressing
3. Bandaging Techniques for Unintentional Injuries

What I Need to Know

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

1. Discuss the function of dressing and bandages
2. Explains the principles of wound dressing
3. Demonstrates appropriate bandaging techniques for unintentional injuries.
How to Learn from this Module
To achieve the objectives cited above, you are to do the following:
• Take your time reading the lessons carefully.
• Follow the directions and/or instructions in the activities and exercises diligently.
• Answer all the given tests and exercises.

What I Need to Know

Learning Competency: Discusses the function of dressing and bandages

At the end of the lesson, you will be able to:
1. Know the function of Dressing and Bandaging.
2. Explain the function of Dressing and Bandaging.
3. Perform the techniques of Dressing and Bandaging in a real life situation.

What’s New

Activity 1: Bonding with Dressing and Bandages

Examine the pictures.

2. What do you call them?
3. When do you use them?
What Is It

Definition of Terms:

in place, or to apply pressure controlling the bleeding.
 Sterile - Free from bacteria or other living microorganisms; totally clean.
 Compress – flatten by pressure; squeeze or press.

What’s More

Activity 2: Twist and Double Match

Arrange the scrambled letters in Column A to form words related to first aid. Connect them to
their correct definition or purpose in Column B.
Column A Column B
1. SINGDERS A. a sterile cloth used to cover wounds
2. CLOD PRESSCOM B. used to reduce swelling
3. OLDC DAP C. can be used as cold compress
4. NABGADES D. used to apply pressure to stop bleeding

7. SPARINS G. ligaments are torn
8. TRINSAS H. muscles are overstretched
9. FARCTERU I. caused by heat
10. LISDOCATION J. a cut in the skin

What Is It

Techniques in Applying a Dressing

1. Wash hands and wear gloves, if conceivable.
2. Unwrap the dressing as near the injury as could be expected under the circumstances.
Be certain not to contact the injury.
3. If the dressing slips over the casualty's skin while you are attempting to situate it, dispose
of and utilize a new one.
4. Place the dressing over the injury.
5. Use a dressing that is sufficiently enormous to reach out at any rate 1 inch past the
edges of the injury.
6. If body tissue or organs are uncovered, spread the injury with a dressing that will stick.
7. Then secure the dressing with a swathe or sticky tape.
A. Cold Compress – is used to reduce swelling and relieve pain, especially used for
sprains and strains.
Techniques in Bandaging
1. Keep at the top of the priority list the following:
a. Always utilize a square knot
b. Keep the fabric sterile to stay away from contamination
c. Always keep the ends
2. Bandaging strategy relies on the size and area of the injury, your emergency
treatment abilities, and materials within reach.
3. Bandage immovably over draining and safely over the messed up bone, not all that
tight so as not to cut off blood course.
4. When folding gauzes over the body, for example, knees, lower legs, neck, and little
back utilize its regular empty to slide the swathe delicately into the right spot.
5. Since most wounds swell, check consistently to guarantee that the wrap is as yet
agreeable and that it remains solidly made sure about.
6. Secure the gauze with a tape, cuts or a bow or square bunch. Guarantee that the
swathes, particularly the bunches, don't contact the skin.
Two Phases of Bandaging
 An open phase bandaging is used for wounds on top and back of the head, chest,
back, hand, and foot, and as arm sling.
 A cravat phase bandaging is used for wounds that need extra support like wound on
the eye, forehead, ear, cheek, jaw, shoulder, hip, arm, leg, elbow knee, and palm
and for sprained ankle. The narrower the cravat is, the greater the pressure it will
give.
Triangular Bandage – is made from cloth and can be used as cold compress, padding,
support for pressure, or support sling.

Summary
There are agencies in the country whether private or public that can help us broaden
our knowledge in first aid specifically in dressing and bandaging. One of these is the
Philippine Red Cross; this agency offer free trainings and seminars for any establishment
including schools.
Being informed on the ways or techniques in managing wound through dressing and
bandaging is very essential. With the growing number of accidents happening in the country
we should be vigilant and be ready to help or take responsibility in every situation.
In this module, you have learned the importance of dressing and bandaging that
leads us to safety and awareness of every individual. Every activity is a step in nurturing the
learners to be more skilful in dealing with real life events. With this, they will be able to
assess that in their own way they can make a difference.
Transfer goals of the lesson can also help the students to deepen their understanding by
means of performing the basic techniques in dressing and bandaging.
