1
What’s In

“Social media is the ultimate equalizer. It gives a voice and platform to anyone
willing to engage.” – Amy Jo Martin
People nowadays have different views in seeing our world. We always engage
ourselves in sharing our ideas and perceptions with other people. With the use of media,
it gives power to voiceless people. It also encourages people to view an idea from a
different angle. It teaches us to be fully aware of the real happenings in our society.
Therefore, the media has a great powerful impact on people's lives.

What’s New

Take a look!

A wall of graffiti by a railroad track along the Iowa River. Photo taken May 11, 2013.

We always see graffiti from walls and classroom desks. We may not be able to
locate the culprit of these unwanted arts, but we may detect which group or gang can
be held responsible. In your opinion, why do some people draw on walls and let the
public see it? Do you think this is an exercise of our “freedom of expression”? Why or
why not?

What is It

The Opportunity, Challenges and Power of Media and Information

Opportunity – It is a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something.
(Example: opportunity to get education)
Opportunity of Media to:
1. Economy – The media gives opportunity to the news industry, film production,
entertainment programs, print, broadcast, Internet, advertising, and public
relations.
Example: GMA provides news and updates that help people to be updated in our
country’s economic progress.
2. Education – Learning has never been easier and at the same time, more
complicated that it is today in the age of media and information.
Example: Showing videos to students to explain the topic
3. Social – Media of today is playing an outstanding role in shaping public opinion.
Example: Social networking sites such as Facebook and Instagram help people to
communicate with others
4. Political – Candidates and their supporters constantly post their views on social
media. Each party has its own pages, from which it broadcasts propaganda and
requests for donations.
Example: Politicians use the media to influence society.
Challenges of Media:
1. Illegal Content – It shows extreme sexual violence or materials that are overly
violent.
Example: Child pornography or child abuse
2. Cybercrime – These are criminal offenses committed via the Internet or
otherwise aided by various forms of computer technology, such as the use of
online social networks to bully others or sending sexually explicit digital photos
with a smart phone.
Example: Internet hacking
3. Copyright Infringement – is the unlawful use of works protected
by copyright law without permission.
Example: Recording a film in a movie theater
4. Identity theft - is the crime of obtaining the personal or financial information of
another person to use their identity to commit fraud, such as making
unauthorized transactions or purchases.
Example: Stealing e-wallets

Power of Media – The mass media is powerful because audiences tend to trust them all
the time. Sometimes, people tend to believe in fake news without researching the original
source.

2. It also connects and binds people together. It has also an impact in the world of
business specifically in advertising, entrepreneurship and employment.

Negative:
1. It consumes the time of the user.
2. It can cause computer addiction.
3. It can cause cyberbullying, depression, anxiety and worldwide crimes.

4
What’s More

Activity: Read the article and answer the question. Write your answer on a separate
sheet of paper.
The Online Selling Phenomenon

Aside from citizen journalism, there are other instances by which people are empowered
by the media, one of which has become so obvious these days because of the pandemic.
With normal trade affected by the months of lockdown, many people can manage
business through the basic yet powerful online platform. I believe that you are very
much aware of how online selling flourishes these days. Lazada and Shopee have
become the virtual malls for people who want easy access to products without leaving
their homes. Food can be served conveniently through Grab Food and Food Panda. But
more than these, small scale enterprise flourished through online selling via Facebook
Live and deliveries through “pasabuy.” For many Filipinos whose jobs or businesses
were affected by the lockdown, these became means of earning a living in the new
normal.

QUESTION: How does online selling thrive in the time of pandemic?

What’s In

People browse the internet for leisure and they always search on one common
item: the trend. Getting updated is the first thing people do because they never want to
be left behind. What is popular now may not be the trend anymore tomorrow. More than
just settling on what is “in” today, we always look beyond and imagine what the future
will hold. We better get back to learning; the future may be just a few steps away.

What’s New

Directions: Look at the picture and answer the question below. Use a separate sheet of
paper for your explanation.

“Who is smarter, humans or robots?”

2
What is It

Media and Information Literacy recognizes the primary role of information and media
in our everyday lives. It lies at the core of freedom of expression and information –
since it empowers citizens to understand the functions of media and other information
providers, to critically evaluate their content, and to make informed decisions as users
and producers of information and media content.

Massive Open Online Course

- A massive open online course (MOOC) is an online course that has open access
and interactive participation by means of the Web. MOOCs provide participants
with course materials that are normally used in a conventional education setting
– such as examples, lectures, videos, study materials and problem sets.

Some of the advantages of a MOOC are as follows:

- No tuition fees
- Open access, exposing top level professors at schools that would otherwise be
unavailable to much of the World’s population
- Open courses for all interested, regardless of location, resulting in a more diverse
student base

Examples:

a. Duolingo – is a language learning platform used by more than 70 million people

worldwide.
b. Treehouse – is creating the “classroom from the future” with this superb learning
platform.
c. Google Primer – is a new app from Google designed to teach digital marketing
basics in a fast, easy to learn environment.
d. Lynda.com – is a learning and training website built around video tutorials.
e. Codeacademy – anyone with the Internet can access free courses on coding,
24/7, anywhere in the world.

Wearable Technologies are the pioneer and worldwide leading innovation and market
development platform for technologies worn close to the body, or even in the body.

Categories of Wearable Technologies:

● Sports & Fitness – A wearable technology helps the athletes to get qualified input
about vital data during work-out.
o Example: StretchSense – is a fabric sensor that is a perfectly field-ready
solution for naturally measuring sports movements.
● Healthcare & Wellness – Wearable medical devices actually help patients allow
people to keep track of their health while avoiding unnecessary visits to the doctor
and save cost at the same time.
o Example: Valedo Back Therapy is a device attached to the person’s back
and the smart sensors are able to store data.
● Security & Prevention: Wearable Technologies are essential in countless
industries in order to ensure highest, up-to-date safety and security standards.

3
oExample: Alpinestar’s Tech-air is the world’s most technologically
advanced electronic airbag system for motorcycle riders and first fully self-
sustained active protection technology to function completely
independently of the motorcycle.
● Gaming & Lifestyle – The world of gaming has been undergoing massive
changes, and the tools that are used are becoming as unobtrusive as never
imagined before.
o Example: Virtuix Omni – It is a virtual reality system with a complete body
experience approach.
● Wearable Gadgets
o Example: Vuzix M100 Smart Glasses & Google SmartWatch

3D Environment – 3D Interactive environments are often referred to as virtual reality

or interactive 3D and have a figurative appearance. Much like our own world, this type
of world allows interaction with other (networked) beings as well as manipulation of
objects (Loeffler & Andersen, 1994). They are a kind of virtual habitat.

3D Printing or Additive Manufacturing – It is a process of making three dimensional

solid objects from a digital life.

3D Films – It is a three-dimensional stereoscopic film (also known as three-dimensional

film, 33D or S3D film). It is a motion picture that enhances the illusion of depth
perception, hence adding a third dimension.

Augmented Reality (AR) – It is a type of interactive, reality-based display environment

that takes the capabilities of computer generated display, sound, text and effects to
enhance the user’s real-world experience.

Hologram- It is an image created by a photographic projection of a recording of a light

field rather than an image formed by some sort of lens.

Ubiquitous Learning – It can be defined as an everyday learning environment that is

supported by mobile and embedded computers and wireless networks in our everyday
life (Ogata et al. 2009). It is aimed to provide learners with content and interaction
anytime and anywhere (Hwang et al. 2008).

Key Characteristics of Ubiquitous Learning:

a. Permanency
b. Accessibility
c. Interactivity
d. Situating of instructional activities
e. Adaptability

Paperless Society – It can be defined as a society in which communication and record

keeping (written documents, letters, etc.) with the use of paper is replaced by electronic
communication and storage. This concern was originated by Frederick Lancaster in
1978.

Advantages:

● A paperless office uses less physical space when bulky filing cabinets are
eliminated or reduced.
● Relocating to a smaller office or building may be possible, saving money on a
lease.

4
● The chances of losing important documents are lower when scanned and filed
electronically, and the documents are often easier to find in an electronic system.

Disadvantages:

● Up-to-date computer hardware and software is essential for a paperless office, so

you may have to upgrade your systems initially and keep them upgraded, which
comes at a cost.
● If you do not have an IT person in your company, you may need to hire one to
monitor your system, train new users and perform regular backups of your
information.
Maintaining tight security for your documents and business information is vital,
and the more people use a system, the closer it must be monitored for privacy
issues & viruses.

2
What is It

What is a media effect?

Media effects - The processes and products of media influence that act directly on
targets (individuals and macro units of society and institutions) as well as indirectly
on targets through other units. These effects can be intentional or unintentional on
the part of both the media senders as well as the target receivers. They can be
manifested or hidden from natural observation. They are constant and ongoing. And
they are shaped not just by the media influence but within a constellation of other
factors that act in concert with the media influence.

Individual-level effect: Effect on an individual person

Macro-level effect: Effect on an aggregate, such as the public, institutions,

society, or the media industries themselves

Type of effect - One of the six categories of effects: cognitive, belief, attitudinal,
affective, physiological, and behavioral.

Cognitive effect: Media exposure exercising an influence on an individual’s mental

processes or the product of those mental processes; typically
involves the acquisition, processing, and storage of information.

Belief effect: Media exposure exercises an influence on an individual’s perception

of the probability that an object or event is associated with a given
attribute.

Attitudinal effect: Media exposure exercising an influence on an individual’s

evaluative judgments; typically involves providing people with
elements to evaluate or shaping standards of evaluation.

Affective effect: Media exposure exercising an influence on an individual’s feelings

such as emotions and moods.

Physiological effect: Media exposure exercising an influence on an individual’s

automatic bodily responses to stimuli.

Behavioral effect: Media exposure exercising an influence on an individual’s doing

something.

Media-influenced functions -Generic ways the media can influence individuals. There
are four in this conceptualization: acquiring, triggering, altering, and conditioning.

3
Acquiring: The media influences the person to obtain something he/she did not have
prior to a particular exposure.

Triggering: The media influences the person by activating something that already
exists in the individual.

Altering: The media influences the person to change something that the person
already had.

Reinforcing: The media influences the person by gradually making something in the
person more difficult to change over time.

Media Effects Template (MET) A two-dimensional matrix that is used to categorize the

media effects literature. One MET is for individual-level effects and is structured by six
types of effects with four media-influenced functions. The macro-level MET is structured
by five types of effects with three macro structures.

What’s New

The term media was first used to describe newspapers more than two centuries ago.
Today, the media has many different connotations. For instance, there are mass media,
print media, visual media and social media. While media can take on many different
forms, the purpose of all media is universally the same -- media is a channel of
communication.

Media complements instructor-led learning by encouraging students to listen to music,

read print materials, or watch a documentary or movie clip. The primary advantage of
this approach is that the instructor takes on the role of a facilitator who helps students
interpret what they are listening to, reading or seeing. Media can also be student-
generated. This approach utilizes asking the student to step into the role of the teacher
and create content that will engage learners and help them to master concepts. Lastly,
social media can also be used to enhance teaching and learning and it includes varied
online technology tools that allow people to communicate easily via the internet to share
information and resources.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of the media format?

Each media format has inherent strengths and weaknesses. Social media messages, for
example, are quick and efficient but prone to inaccuracies. In general, newspapers
provide depth and accuracy but lack the sensory appeal of television, the interactive
feature of a blog, and the rapid delivery of radio.

Format Strengths Weaknesses

Web sites, blogs, Accessible; interactive; diverse; Prone to inaccuracies; often

microblogs immediate; inexpensive biased and opinionated

Newspapers, Accurate; comprehensive; Limited to text and pictures;

magazines, books appeal to general public slow delivery

Television, radio Strong audio and visual Highly commercialized; highly

appeal; current; local; friendly persuasive; may be biased
