Research Topic: The Filipino "Crab Mentality" and its Impact on Community Development

The topic that interests me is the "Crab Mentality" phenomenon in the Philippines, which refers to the

behavior of Filipinos who pull down or discourage those who are progressing or succeeding in life, out of

envy or jealousy. Michael Tan's column, "The ugly side of beauty" (Philippine Daily Inquirer, June 7,

2021), discusses how this mentality is evident in the beauty pageant culture in the Philippines.

To gather information about the extent of the crab mentality and its impact on community development,

an indigenous research method that could be used is the "Pulong-Pulong" or community dialogue. It is a

traditional way of communication among Filipinos, where people gather in a community setting to

discuss issues and share ideas. This method will allow me to listen to the community's stories and

experiences of crab mentality and understand how it affects their community's progress.

To collect data using the Pulong-Pulong method, I would employ a level of relationship called

"pakikisama." This refers to the value of building harmonious relationships with others in the community.

By practicing pakikisama, I can establish trust and rapport with the participants, making them more

comfortable in sharing their experiences and perspectives.
