SEMESTER I
COURSE CODE & NAME DBB1101 – COMMUNICATION &
PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT

ASSIGNMENT-I

Q.NO.1) Elucidate the history and development of English language.

Answer: A language is a principal method of communication used between two humans, consisting of
words in speech or in writing or as a sign gesture. it can be defined as an adaptation that has developed or
evolved as a response or a trigger to a selection pressure towards a better connect for communication.
English is said to be a West Germanic language. Most of the modern English words are originated or derived
from its old English roots.
History of English dates back to mid-5th century and had dominated most of southern Great Britain by its
then invaders that is Angles, Saxons and Jutes each leaving and understanding their communication of
exchange. The Anglo Saxons settled in the British Isles at this time and their language was spoken by many
settlers in England and southern and eastern Scotland in early mid age. This seems to have replaced the
British Latin which was mostly used as a spoken language in these parts. Slowly over a period of time, the
Anglo-Saxon kingdoms established in Britain and their dialect became more prominent. This English is
called old English that mainly had four dialects as west Saxon, Mercian, north Umbrian,
and Kentish. This form of old English cannot be easily deciphered or understood today by modern day
linguistics and requires a detailed understanding. Much Later in 8th and 9th centuries, Britain was again also
invaded and conquered by Scandinavian Vikings and this eventually led to the simplification of grammar.
The Old English is said to have its roots and existence during 500 to 1100 AD.
The Anglian dialect and accent had a far greater impact on the Middle English that existed between 1100
AD to 1500 AD. English went through three main phases in various periods Old English (500-
1100 AD), Middle English (1100-1500), and Modern English (1500-Present.). English has been

continuously been evolving till date. Old English as stated earlier is an earlier version of modern day
English in Britain. The earlier speakers called it Englisc.
Middle English: The English as a language has evolved and adapted from 1100 AD to 1500
AD, this time around the 12th century Britain was under the Norman rule. The French kings
ruled England however knew very less English. Few like Henry II understood but could never
speak it. At this time there was a predominant French influence on the English dialect. Between
the old and middle English, there was a visible difference in grammar and in the order followed
by words.
Early modern English was prevalent from 15th century onwards, by now the British had contact
with many countries and natives from the world. During this time, the citizens of Britain were
also more active in learning the English as a skilled language. At this time, there was also an
influence and usage of many words from Latin and Greek which were known as language of
upper class.
Late modern English (1800 AD till today): the modern English that exists in present days has
many new words due to vast exposure to the world (British empire expanded the most at this
time to many countries and they picked up several new words from various native languages)
and also while there arise a need to create new words due to the industry revolution and updated
technology.

Question2) Define sentence. Write all types of sentences with two examples each.

Answer: A sentence is a collection or set of meaningful words that is complete in itself,

typically contains a relevant subject and predicate, giving a statement, a question, exclamation,
or instruction, and consists of a main clause and sometimes one or more subordinate clauses.

Various types of sentences are explained below with relavant examples:

1. Positive or affirmative sentences
These types of sentences allow us to clearly or directly state something. This means
affirming something.
E.g. I completed my task
I drank my cup of coffee.
We use “has” for singular and “have” for plural e.g. He has a Toyota, They have
finished morning assignment.
When someone thinks strongly about an expression, a verb is used for emotive stress
reference e.g. You indeed look handsome in that suit!
When a negative word such as never, rarely, hardly, etc., begins a
positive sentence, the subject and verb are inverted. In other words, the
question word order is used.
Example,
1. Rarely have I experienced such a beautiful feeling.
2. Hardly had I finished my morning tea when my phone rang giving a sad news.
The order for the words in an affirmative sentence in present tense is subject +verb form or
subject + auxiliary verb + verb form
Example,

2. He has created a beautiful painting.

I never leave work early

‘has not” is used for a singular subject and “have not” for plural
E.g. He has not finished his assignment
They have not reached work

The word order for negative sentences in present tense is subject +auxiliary verb (with
“not”) + verb form
e.g. 1. He will not write every day
2. He has not been painting lately
The word order for negative sentences in future tense (will
case) is subject + auxiliary + not + verb form
e.g. 1. He will not write daily
2. He will not be writing creatively every day
The word order for negative sentences in past tense is subject +
auxiliary verb + not + verb form.

Unconditional statement: these are the statement sentences without any condition
specified e.g. I love the aroma of coffee
Conditional statement could be of further various types: Open conditional statement,
Hypothetical conditional statement, and unfulfilled hypothetical statement.
An open conditional statement refers a future event that depends on another event e.g.
if I work like this, my knees will collapse or if my assignment is rewarded, I will get
my promotion

another future condition

the vocabulary as it pertains to clear and effective communication at the work place. There are
various ways in which one can develop the vocabulary and are explained below:

1. Visualization: An act of visualization i.e. creating mental pictures about a word helps
an individual learn new words and retain the meaning of word in a very effective
manner. This method also helps in overall reading comprehension of the word.
Sometimes we are not able to remember difficult words however seeing them and
learning after understanding helps to register and recall them better. E.g. in our
childhood we are first introduced to picture story books that make us comprehend the
words and their meaning better. Once a difficult word is learnt, practice using it in daily
life so this would have a better recall value.
2. Rote Method: A rote or the memorization method are used at a very young age and by
repeating a word means we are practising and memorizing it.

written behind the card. This helps in connecting a word to its meaning and can be used
as a game in spare time to understand the words better. This is also a fun way of learning
and rejuvenates the mind. The cards used in games can be of various types e.g. cards
can carry words, picture, phrase etc. with meaning mentioned at the back and makes it
enjoyable. A flash card can have old and new words to be reviewed while seeing the

an individual’s mind. Use colourful and interesting cards with legible fonts used for the
words.

reading new words. One can aim to learn two new words daily and this is possible when
we expose ourselves to reading and hearing speeches. The best way is to note down any
