❖ Introduction In this lesson, the learners will develop their vocabulary


through learning meanings of unfamiliar words based on
given context clues. It is one of the ways to improve
learner’s communication skills like listening, speaking,
reading and writing.

Types of Compound Words


1. Open compound words are words that have a space

Examples: funny book, use as a noun (my

2. Closed compound words are made up of two words
without a space in between. Examples:
fireproof, used as adjective (fireproof material)
lawmaker, used as a noun (a brilliant lawmaker)

3. Hyphenated compound words are words that require a


dash/hyphen between the words.
Examples:
chain-react, used as verb (chain-react silently) one-way
used as adjective (a one-way street)
