 Introduction In this lesson, the learners will develop their


vocabulary through learning meanings of
unfamiliar words based on given context clues. It
is one of the ways to improve learner’s
communication skills like listening, speaking,
reading and writing.

to the board.
4. Show the student one pair of word antonym
from the list.
5. The pupil must draw pictures representing
the pair of antonym and their group members
have to guess the words based on the drawing.
6. If the group correctly guess the words, they
earn a point. If not, the second team gets a
chance to guess for a bonus point.
7. Continue with different pupils until all have
a chance to participate.

Presentation:
Let the pupils read the passage aloud. Then call a
volunteer to give his/her observation about the
italicized word.

Bali is a province of Indonesia. The province


covers a few small neighboring islands as well as
the isle of Bali.
What does the word isle mean? How did you
know? If you look closely at the other words in the
passage, you will find that the word islands
suggests the opposite of isle, a small island.

Antonyms are words with opposite meanings.


Most words have multiple antonyms. Your
knowledge of antonyms of words will help you
understand the meaning of unfamiliar words. The
word but is also a signal that there is a word of
opposite meaning in the sentence.

Unfamiliar word is included in a series of


related words that give an idea of the word
meaning.

Inference clue is a word or a phrase which is


not immediately clarified within the same
sentence. Relationships which are not directly
apparent are inferred or implied. The reader must
look for clues within before and after the sentence
in which the word is used.
