MODULE 5: TEACHING VOCABULARY AND PRONUNCIATION

REFLECTION
ENGLISH 6: UNIT 1: LESSON 2- A CLOSER LOOK 1
I have examined this lesson plan. After carefully studying it, I have some comments on the
objectives and the activities as follow. Basically, it has good points, however, it still exits some
problems need to be changed.
First of all, let’s start with its objectives. They are quite clear and adequate. They are divided
into three parts: One part is about pronouncing correctly the sounds:/ / and/ ˄ /, the others are
using the combinations from verbs with nouns and improving the listening, writing and
speaking skills, however, we think that the last part is quite ambigous and wide as teacher does
not state which level of cognition student should reach at the end of the lesson. Moreover it
doesn’t follow the bloom’s taxonomy so the objectives should be restated as follow.
* By the and of the lesson students will be able to recognize the meaning of some new words
and their combinatons with the verbs.
* Identify and distinguish the sounds: / / and/ ˄ /.
* Practice using the combinations fluently and pronouncing two sounds correctly.
* Making sentences with the combinations and the sounds: /∂/ and / / about themselves.
Secondly, regarding the activities in the lesson, there are some strengths as follow: the lesson is
organized in a logical way with three main parts: presentation, practice and production. This
organization follow the principles of teaching vocabulary and pronunciation. Moreover, the
presentation part is conducted well, the teacher used the suitable techniques to help students
understand and remember the knowledge more easily. The activities go from easy to difficult
and they are quite effective, they also help support to achieve the main objectives of the lesson .
Beside above the strengths, these activities still have some problems. Firstly, In warm up
activity, the pictures in activity 1 can’t be used for Kim’s game because they’re new words to
students, they should be replaced by the pictures about school things in previous lesson.
Secondly, Teacher needs to show clearly the techniques he or she uses to teach each new word.
For example: to post ( symnonym)...We agree with teacher’s organization in activity 2,
however, we think that it will be better if teacher let students play game create word webs. This
will give students the chance to share and help each other, It will also make more lively
classroom atmosphere. Thirdly, these activities don’t help differentiate students, after activity 2
teacher should ask some strong students to find more words with the verbs, and before activity
4, an easy exercise should be given to weak students to help them make up sentences by
themshelves. Moreover, teacher should encourage good students to use other combinations and
the words with sounds: / / and/ ˄ / which they know to make up sentences.
Finally, basically this lesson plan has some strengths: The activities are organized logically and
they go from easy to difficult, moreover they also help achieve the main objectives of the
lesson. However, we think that if the teacher apply the suggestions we gave above, the lesson
will get better effect.
