MY “PLAN A” CAREER CHOICE IS: Graphic Designer

Some helpful websites: www.workbc.ca/navigator or www.jobbank.gc.ca

My Plan A: ❏ I want a career that offers self-employment

Consider: ❏ I like making art and looking at art pieces
❏ What do you enjoy? ❏ I’ve always had an interest in designing whether it’s
❏ What sort of lifestyle do you architecture or creating digital media.
want? ❏ I’d say I’m good at understanding the internet, understanding
❏ What are you good at? how to utilize software tools, how to promote/sell and
planning out big projects.

Career Info that I have ❏ Pros: Graphic designing offers self-employment, highly
discovered… creative job with tons of freedom, most work done from home,
Consider: avoid physical work, and work for companies.
❏ Upsides/downsides of job ❏ Cons: Highly demanded Job, criticism from demanding
❏ Job duties/ responsibilities clients, while not doing physical work is a plus but spending
❏ Salary range all day on your computer can be a disadvantage. Most
❏ Future outlook companies require degrees in order to become an employee
❏ Lifestyle factors for a graphic designing firm. Being graphic designer most of
❏ Advancement opportunities your time is spent looking at a screen and it can take a toll on
your health.
❏ Graphic designers are responsible for consulting with clients
to understand the project needs such as materials and the
overall look of the final product. It is also their duty to insure
they have estimated costs and the timeline. They are
responsible of preparing sketches and developing design
elements to preview to the client.
❏ Job bank predicted in 2018 from 2019-2028 4,700 new job
openings will be available, in BC graphic designers are very
limited compared to other provinces in Canada and is highly
competitive because there’s many unemployed workers with
recent experience. Approximately 17,400 people work in this
occupation.
❏ Graphic designers spend most of their time working on a
computer and stare at screen for hours upon hours. Staring at
a screen everyday can be tiring and unhealthy to the point it
intervenes with your lifestyle. Computer screens emit lots of
blue light which is very harmful to our eyes and can strain
your eyes. Buying special pair of glasses can reduce blue
light entering your eyes.
❏ The lowest wage a graphic designer can expect when
working in BC for a company is $20, $30 is the median wage,
and $50 is the highest wage you can expect.
❏ After getting a degree in graphic designing you can apply for
a position at multiple different companies mainly clothing
companies.
❏ Options after graphic designing is very similar work, but more
specific (cartoonist, commercial artist, 3D animation artist,
illustrator etc.) or with enough experience you can manage
other designers.

Three employability skills I 1. Working with adobe illustrator.

possess that will support my - I have some experience on adobe illustrator because I had drafting
plan: class where used illustrator to create floor plans for homes and draft
out projects.
Consider:
❏ Soft and hard Skills required
for position
❏ Personal attributes 2. Promotion and Branding skills
- In leadership and marketing we learned useful tools to promote and
brand products or fundraisers, and I gained a great understanding on
how to apply it.

3. Computer skills
- I understand capabilities using technology and I’m good at learning
technology related skills like coding, using excel, and other
software's.

Education needed to pursue my

plan: A high school diploma is mandatory while a university degree in fine
arts or designing is recommended, but it’s not a necessity. If your
Consider: trying to be a self-employed graphic designer a degree would be
❏ Courses/training/ certificates useless. If you want to work for a company especially big companies
needed a university degree or even better a bachelor’s degree will help you
❏ Post-secondary acquire a better position and beat the competition.

MY BACKUP CAREER PLAN IS: Flight Attendant

Some helpful websites: www.workbc.ca/navigator or www.jobbank.gc.ca

My Plan B: ❏ I would love a lifestyle where I get to travel around the world.
Consider: ❏ I enjoy spending quality time with people I care about.
❏ What do you enjoy? ❏ I’m good at remaining calm in very tense situations and I
❏ What sort of lifestyle do you know as a flight attendant you have to prepare for the worst.
want? ❏ I’m a quick learner and have already done a course on first
❏ What are you good at? aid.
❏ After I’ve been taught something and have gained
experience with it I can easily explain and demonstrate
safety procedures with calm.

Career Info that I have ❏ Pros: Friends and Family get flying benefits, flying benefits
discovered… like reduced airline tickets, the lifestyle is up to you, meeting
people all around the world and making lifelong friends, and
Consider: of course you get paid to see the world. There are many
❏ Upsides/downsides of job amazing qualities to being a flight attendant and It would be
❏ Job duties/responsibilities the perfect backup career because I love to travel and gain
❏ Salary range new experiences.
❏ Future outlook ❏ Cons: Spending half of your week in the air for the first time
❏ Lifestyle factors can feel awkward. Another con to that is being tired all the
❏ Advancement opportunities time, being in the air while taking care of others without
enough sleep is unhealthy and annoying. The worst part is
when you are on call and at any time you might get a call.
Being on call can is mentally and physically hard just
imagine yourself being awoken to an alarm at 4 am and you
have to wake up to answer it. In the summer we went to new
York for a 1 week vacation and it was fun until we had to
leave. Our flight was scheduled to head to Vancouver at 9am
eastern and we woke up at 3 am getting ready so we could
check in early. The flight ended up getting delayed 2-3 times
and we stayed at the airport from 5 am to 6:30 pm almost 13
hours. We boarded the plane 3 times only to be kicked off
every time due to security precautions and also because the
flight crew couldn’t attend the flight since they’ve worked all
their hours and would be forced to do overtime without pay
which is illegal. Honestly one of the worst experiences of my
life being in a unfamiliar country and staying almost 14 hours
at an airport without enough sleep. It was freezing cold
inside the airport and I remember forcing myself to stay
awake since I was guarding all of our belongings while my
family got food. With this experience can’t imagine how
difficult it would be keeping up with a uncertain schedule and
delayed flights on a weekly basis.
❏ Lifestyle of a flight attendant is rough because they work
long hours and often on standby. Maintaining relationships is
very difficult and often get burnt out or sleep deprived. The
salary is very low to start.
❏ In BC flight attendants are very limited
❏ There are rankings for flight attendants first, senior, lead, and
instructor which depends on your experience.

Three employability skills I 1. Customer interaction

possess that will support my - I’ve worked as a receptionist before which I handled phone calls,
plan: helped customers with any misunderstandings, and guide them step
by step with patience. I’ve never had any issue with customers and
Consider: never been in a tense situation.
❏ Soft and hard skills required
for position
❏ Personal attributes
2. Calm mindset
- I’m a calm person when it comes to life threatening situations.
There was this one time when I was hiking with my family in whistler
we encountered a bear and I held my ground by thinking back to
signs saying “stay in groups and be aggressive”. We stayed calm
and the bear left us alone. Being calm during an emergency in the
air is important because it gives off a calmer atmosphere to others
especially when they have to trust you.

3. Following Directions
- Understanding and following directions is an early skill I learned
and It helped me in my work experience when I was working at my
uncles shop. Taking shortcuts is not an option and it made me a
disciplined person.

Education needed to pursue my

plan: ❏ Requires no academic requirements
❏ Requires experience with another job usually jobs working
Consider: with people and communicating
❏ Courses/training/certificates ❏ Requires professional certification and training
needed
