Research Proposal Reflection

1. I learned that there’s always more to write about a certain topic, the writer just has to find

out what that “more” is. When I was writing the research proposal, I felt like I was

writing the same ideas over and over again (honestly at this point AAVE doesn’t even

look like a word to me anymore), so I decided to take a step back and see what

information I could organize in different locations in order to answer all of the questions

to the best of my ability and not sound like a broken record.

2. I learned that the way that I plan things in my head will not always be the best course of

action in the long run. Whenever I write essays, I like to plan what topics I will cover,

then I decide the order in which I will cover them so that I can create an essay that

effortlessly flows from one idea to the next, all whilst retaining the initial point I set out

to cover. When doing the outline, I realized that I was starting to write my topics in a

different order than I had planned them beforehand. Rather than trying to rectify that, I

decided to follow the order that I felt was natural for my writing, and in turn, I believe I

produced a better product.

3. I believe that I will be able to carry out my plan well. Since the beginning of the research

proposal stage I have been structuring how I want to write my finalized essay, and with

the experience that I just mentioned in question 2, I’m confident that I’ll be able to

formulate my essay in an organized and meaningful way, even if that means abandoning

the plans that I had beforehand.

4. My biggest concerns are not meeting the length requirements with my essay and inserting

a level of bias and anecdotal experience into my research paper. I have been able to meet

the length requirements of all of the previous assignments and I know that with this topic

especially I have a lot more that I can talk about aside from the research that I have

already done, so the first concern is not a big one. The second, on the other hand, is more

of a concern for me because I feel as though it’s something I can do without even

realizing that I’m doing it. I may not have the most experience with AAVE because of the

environment in which I was raised, but I have a lot of close friends who do have that

experience who have told me how problems that I bring up in my essay have affected

them. I hope to stay as factual and accurate to my sources as possible by sticking to

analyzing and utilizing said sources as much as possible and only inserting personal

experiences when I see that they are on topic and apply completely. (495 words)
