THE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE STUDY HABITS AND ACADEMIC
PERFORMANCE OF HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

CHAPTER 1

The Problem and It’s Background

Introduction

Study habits are what help students to learn better. Every student has their own study
methods and with this, they achieve many academic successes. Tus, J., Rayo, F., Lubo, R., Cruz,
M. A. (2020) Mentioned that academic achievement is built on good study habits. It is an action
that students execute on a regular basis, such as reading, taking notes, and leading study groups,
in order to achieve their learning objectives.

Dr. Sivakumar, R. (2020) mentioned that the benefits of using social media for educational
purposes are numerous. According to one study, the use of Social media platforms enhanced
students' learning chances and enabled real-time collaboration outside of the classroom,
encouraged collaboration opportunities, and improved creativity. Students can learn by watching
relevant films or impart knowledge about what they've seen and learned, and then connect online
to discuss further with teachers.

Although social media has indeed a lot of benefits to studying, Bacarisas, J., Dinero, C.,
Baldespinosa, C., Andador, J. (2019) finds that excessive use of social media has a negative
impact on every student's study habits. It may also harm academic performance by reducing the
time available for studying and finishing activities. Additionally, constant exposure to the
meticulously produced and frequently romanticized depictions on social media can result in
inferiority complexes, social comparison, and a loss of self-esteem, which can undermine
students' motivation and interest in their academics. Onovo, N. E., Neboh, O. I., Agbo, C. P.,
Onyebuchi, C. V. (2021) also found out that secondary school pupils spend the majority of their
time on social media sites, rather than studying, which explains their inferior grades.

This research study seeks to investigate junior high school students who are currently
affected by the use of social media. This study also attempts to specifically look into how social
media affects junior high school students' study habits and academic achievement. It is crucial to
comprehend this relationship because it can help parents, educators, and policymakers in
developing solutions that will minimize any negative effects and maximize any potential
advantages provided by social media platforms.

This goal will be accomplished through a thorough study of the results of prior research,
questionnaires, and interviews with high school students. The study's conclusions will clarify the
variables affecting social media usage patterns, the effect of social media on study habits, and the
relationship between social media use and academic achievement. By comprehending these
dynamics, successful techniques and interventions can be created to support students in
maintaining productive study habits while promoting healthy social media usage, thus increasing
academic performance.

In summary, this study intends to shed light on how social media affects high school
students' study habits and academic performance. This study aims to offer useful insights to
support the creation of targeted interventions and strategies to promote healthy social media use
and improve students' academic success by examining the impact of social media usage patterns
on students' study routines and exploring its impact on academic outcomes.

9|Page
To summarize this survey, with number 2 being the question with the most yes answer,
this suggest that most of the students use Facebook to collaborate with their peers and such to
gain knowledge. And number 10 being the question with lowest yes answer, this shows that most
students can still focus on exams despite their social media usage. By this survey, the researchers
are able to understand the effect of social media to high school students and by these results,
people who will see and read this paper can make countermeasure to prevent any repercussions
about the various effects of excessive use of social media.

The survey clarified the social media's complex effects on high school students. The
study showed a connection between excessive social media use, poor academic performance, and
fewer social interactions. These results underline how crucial it is to encourage high school kids
to use social media responsibly and to maintain a good balance between online and offline
activities.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Effects of Social Media on Study Habits and Academic Performance
of High School Students may vary. Meanwhile, it is critical to understand that individual
differences, propensities for self-regulation, and usage patterns all have an impact on how social
media affects study habits and academic achievement. Students can lessen any negative effects
and take advantage of the educational opportunities provided by social media platforms by
developing efficient time management techniques, establishing boundaries for social media use,
and encouraging digital literacy.

The study found that high school students' excessive use of social media had a negative
impact on their study habits and academic performance. Students who used social media more
frequently reported lower concentration, more procrastination, and shorter study sessions. Lower
grades, lessening output, and an overall decrease in academic achievement occurred as a result.

The survey also discovered that students' use of social media frequently served as a
distraction from their schoolwork. Ineffective learning and information retention were caused by
the continuous notifications, scrolling feeds, and participation in online activities. Additionally,
social media sites gave pupils the chance to multitask, which was proven to have a negative
impact on their capacity for focus and information absorption.

Recommendation

Involve parents and guardians: Discuss with parents and guardians how social media usage
affects their child’s study habits. Encourage them to keep an eye on and supervise their child's
social media use while stressing the value of a balanced strategy that puts academic obligations
first.

Encourage face-to-face interaction: Encourage student contact in person and offline socializing.
To promote a feeling of community and lessen an over-reliance on social media for social
connections, encourage group study sessions, extracurricular activities, and involvement in
school events.

Utilize social media as a learning tool: Showcase the beneficial features of social media by
highlighting the educational materials, online study groups, or academic communities that can be
found there. Orient students toward trustworthy educational resources and online communities
that can enhance their learning.

Future researchers undertaking this same topic: future researchers should consider undertaking
the same topic as the results of this study can be used as their review of related literature/study.
