Pedagogy
The students will learn about 8 major holidays celebrated in the United
States, what month those holidays are in, and why those dates are
important. The students will be introduced to the lesson by the teacher first
asking if the students can name any of the holidays celebrated in the U.S.,
then the teacher will play the YouTube video titled, “Firefighter Story Time:
“Celebrating Patriotic Holidays, Honoring America: Read by: Firefighter Nick”
which goes over a few of the holidays. Following the video, the teacher will
pass out fact sheets about the holidays that include the month and/or date
of the holiday, why America celebrates it, and three facts about each
holiday. The teacher will then assign a group of 2-3 students one of the 8
holidays where they will be instructed to make a poster representing that
holiday with color and at least one fact about that holiday. Once completed,
the groups of students will take turns presenting their holidays to the class
for everyone to learn. For an at-home project, the student, with the help of
his/her guardian, will be creating a slide presentation using Google Slides
through the website or the app.
The at home project presentation should include the following:
1. Create a Title Slide (this includes the title of the presentation, and
the creator (student) of the presentation)
2. Create the next eight slides as each of the eight major holidays in
the United States, one holiday per slide.
3. Each slide should include the holiday that is being presented, a
picture that best represents that holiday to the student, the month
and/or date in which the holiday occurs, and why the United States
views this holiday as important. Example: Veteran’s Day. Celebrated
on November 11th of every year. Commemorates the services of all
U.S. veterans. The picture to be included in this could be the
American Flag.
4. The final slide should be a conclusion slide that tells the class which
holiday is their favorite, and why. This is a good way for all the
students and teacher to get to know each other better.
