Quiz a89

aaa STAT 2060 Solution

1. A sample is taken from a normal population where it is known that the standard deviation
is ten, ( = 10). A 95% confidence interval for µ is found to be (16.1, 25.9);

(a) What is the sample mean, (x̄)?

16.1 + 25.9
x̄ = = 21
2

(b) What is the sample size, (n)?

M E = Z ↵2 p
n
10
4.9 = 1.96 p
n
p 19.6
n= =4
4.9
n = 16

From a normal population, we select a simple random sample of size 10 and calculate the
sample mean X̄ = 22.12 and sample variance S 2 = 10.966

(a) Construct a 95% confidence interval for the population mean.

s 3.31
x̄ ± t.025
9 p = 22.12 ± 2.262 p = 22.12 ± 2.368
n 10
(19.752, 24.488)
(b) Interpret the interval constructed in (a).

The intervals can be interpreted as either of the following statements:

• We are 95% confident that the true population mean (µ) is within the interval
constructed.
• If the process of selecting a sample of size n = 10 and then computing the cor-
responding 95% intervals were repeated 100 times, then we can expect 95 out of
the 100 intervals to contain the true population mean. However, it is uncertain
whether the interval we constructed in (a) is one of the 95 intervals that contain
µ.
(c) Is 20 a plausible value for µ? Explain?

20 is in the interval, so 20 is a plausible value.

(d) If you take another simple random sample of the same size n = 10, and construct
another 95% confidence interval, would it have the same margin of error? Explain.

Another such interval would have a di↵erent value for s2 and so a di↵erent ME.
