1. Read the passage carefully then answer the questions

below.
Have you ever wondered what keeps a hot air balloon
flying? The same principle that keeps food frozen in the
open chest freezers at the grocery store allows hot air
balloons to fly. It's a very basic principle: Hot air rises
and cold air falls. So while the super-cooled air in the
grocery store freezer settles down around the food, the
hot air in a hot air balloon pushes up, keeping the balloon
floating above the ground. In order to understand more
about how this principle works in hot air balloons, it helps
to know more about hot air balloons themselves.
A hot air balloon has three major parts: the basket, the
burner, and the envelope. The basket is where passengers
ride. The basket is usually made of wicker. This ensures
that it will be comfortable and add little extra weight. The
burner is positioned above the passenger's heads and
produces a huge flame to heat the air inside the envelope.
The envelope is the colorful fabric balloon that holds the
hot air. When the air inside the envelope is heated, the
balloon rises.
The pilot can control the up-and-down movements of the
hot air balloon by regulating the heat in the envelope. To
ascend, the pilot heats the air in the envelope. When the
pilot is ready to land, the air in the balloon is allowed to
cool and the balloon becomes heavier than air. This
makes the balloon descend.
Before the balloon is launched, the pilot knows which
way the wind is blowing. This means that he has a
general idea about which way the balloon will go. But,
sometimes the pilot can actually control the direction that
the balloon flies while in flight. This is because the air
above the ground is sectioned into layers in which the
direction of the wind may be different. So even though
the pilot can't steer the balloon, he can fly higher or lower
into a different layer of air. Some days the difference
between the directions of the wind between layers is
negligible. But other days the difference is so strong that
it can actually push the balloon in a completely different
direction!
i) According to the passage, balloon pilots control the
balloon’s altitude by
a) moving into a different layer of air
b) regulating the air temperature inside the balloon
c) adjusting the amount of air in the envelope
d) changing the amount of weight contained in the
basket
ii) As used in paragraph 3, which is the best synonym for
ascend?
a) move b) fly
c) sink d) climb
iii) As used in paragraph 3, which is the best antonym for
descend?
a) fall b) float
c) rise d) drop
iv) According to the author, wicker is
I: comfortable
II: Light-weight
III: Durable
a) I only b) I and II only
c) II and III only d) I, II, and III
v) If the hot air balloon pilot wants to change directions
during flight, what might he or she do to accomplish
this?
a) head toward a mountain peak
b) wait for it to rain
c) fly into a cloud
d) fly higher
vi) Using the passage as a guide, which of the
following statements is not true?
a) Air goes up and out the top of a chimney when
you light a fire.
b) Cool air collects about the ceiling when you open
a refrigerator.
c) Smoke from a candle rises after you blow out the
flame.
d) Cold air coming from an air conditioning vent
settles about the floor.
vii) Based on its use in paragraph 4, it can be understood
that negligible means:
a) solemn, grave, serious
b) substantial, considerable, large
c) exhilarating, thrilling, exciting
d) insignificant, small, unnoticeable
viii) Give a suitable title for the passage.
2. Read the passage given below and answer the
questions that follow.
1. The family of snakes called vipers includes some of the
most poisonous snakes in the world. These snakes live
mostly in rain forests and wet places. They also dwell
inside small caves in the mountains. Some examples of
the snakes in this fearsome group are the water moccasin,
rattlesnake and copperhead—all of which are found in the
United States of America; the bushmaster and the fer de
lance of South America, and the puff adder of Africa.
2. Vipers have thick bodies, short tails, and triangular
heads. The fangs in their upper jaws inject poison into
their victims’ bodies almost like a hypodermic needle.
When the snakes bite, they contract the muscles around
their poison sacs. These sacs are located behind the eyes.
The poison squirts out through the hollow fangs. Almost
half a teaspoon of poison is put into a victim at one time.
Vipers mainly eat amphibians, small mammals, lizards
and nestlings. The venom of the snake is not used for
predators, meaning, they don’t fight with the venom, but
they use it only for the prey. Their venom has more than a
dozen toxic components. Fortunately, many of these
snakes are small, so their bite is not fatal. An interesting
fact is that these snakes can go without eating for a year.
According to folklore, the touch of the tongue of the viper
snake could heal a person.
3. The viper snake can have a lot of babies. During the
month of August, the female snake gives birth to about 20
young ones in a litter. The eggs stay inside the mouth of
the female viper. They are fed by the mother till they are
old enough to take care of themselves. When the young
are ready to come out, they are set free in the wild.
4. There are actually two main types of vipers—the true
vipers and the pit vipers. The pit vipers live in Asia and
the Americas. The name comes from a small hollow in
the side of the snake’s head just below the eye. This small
hollow or pit has a special nerve or a temperature-sensing
mechanism. This nerve helps the pit viper to find its
warm-blooded prey. Their organs have the same function
as that of a mammal’s. True vipers don’t have this special
nerve and must rely on their keen sense of smell to find
their food. Vipers don’t usually strike unless they are
disturbed or are looking for food. Still, it is a good idea to
stay away from them.
1. Complete the following statements in your own words
based on your reading of the passage.
a) The pit viper gets its name from ___________
b) The viper’s bite is compared to an injection because
_____________
c) We know that the mother viper is very protective

I. Transportation in Plants
To circulate water, essential nutrients, excretory products
and gases within the plants for various purposes,
transportation in plants is necessary. In vascular tissues,
this transportation in plant takes place. By a suction force,
water and minerals are transported to various parts of the
plant. Vascular tissues are normally conducting tissues.
These tissues are of two types: Xylem for conducting water
and phloem for conducting food.
1. In a tall tree, which force is responsible for pulling water
and minerals from the soil?
a) Gravitational force b) Transportation force
c) Suction force d) Conduction force

wondered how water moves up to a great height in the tall
trees standing next to the building. Can you tell how it is
possible?
6. Transpiration plays an important role in transporting water
from roots to the upper parts of the plants. It occurs
through small openings present on the leaves called
stomata. These openings are surrounded by guard cells that
help in opening and closing of stomata.
Statement Agree/Disagree
a) Xylem transport water from root to the leaves.
b) Transpiration is more on hot and humid day.
c) Closed stomata shows the loss of water by guard cells.
d) Minerals from soil enter through root hairs by osmosis.
e) Energy is required for movement of water and minerals
fromsoil.
f) Chlorophyll is used up in the process of photosynthesis.
II. Cell: Structure and Functions

1. “Cells are basic structural units of living organisms.” It is

called so because-
a) Cells exhibit a variety of shapes and sizes.
b) Number of cells present, varies from organism to
organism.
c) The smallest living part of an organism ids cell.
d) Cells were first observed in cork by Robert Hooke in
1665.
2. What is the scientific name used for cytoplasm and
nucleus together?
3. Look at the picture and recognize the organelles from
their functions-

walk in happily. What is the function of ions that are
walking into the cell?
5. Observe the picture of the earth and write the parts of
the earth that are equivalent to cell membrane, nucleus
and cytoplasm.

III. Cell: Structure and Function.

Cell membrane is composed of lipid bilayers and
proteins. Membrane proteins are classified as integral and
peripheral proteins. In human erythrocyte, it is composed
of 52% of proteins and 40% lipids. Fluid Mosaic model
of plasma membrane was proposed by Singer and
Nicolson(1972); widely accepted model which shows the
quasi-fluid nature of lipid enables the lateral movement of
proteins within over all bilayer. The fluid nature of the
membranes is important for certain functions like cell
growth, endocytosis, formation of intercellular
junction, celldivision, secretion etc. one important
properties its permeability; the membrane allows certain
molecules to pass across and does not allow certain
others. Its main function is to transport molecules across
it.
1. Name the proteins present on the surface of the
membrane and do they help in transportation of important
nutrients across it.
2. Scientists worked on the model and landed on a theory.
Explain that.
3. Give the evidences that shows transportation of the
molecules.
4. Name the classified proteins suggested by the scientists.
Mention the percentage of components of bilayered
membrane.
III. If cells of onion peel and RBC are separately kept in
hypotonic solution, what among the following will take
place? Explain the reason for your answer.
a) Both the cells will swell.
b) RBC will burst easily while cells of onion peel will
resist the bursting to some extent.
c) a and b both are correct.
d) RBC and onion peel cells will behave similarly.

Art & Craft

Varli art is practiced by the Warli tribe of Dadra and Nagar

Haveli . It is a much loved tribal art style that was formerly

done on mud walls of hamlets, on paper and canvas, and is

now imbibed by designers on sarees and dress materials. The

look is similar to Batik, and often depicts the sun and moon,

which are the essential deities of the Warli tribe. This art

form rarely uses a straight line, instead, a series of dots and

dashes are made, generally on white or cream backgrounds.
