THE PAST SIMPLE TENSE IS USED TO EXPRESS ACTIONS OR EVENTS THAT HAPPENED AT AN SPECIFIC PAST TIME.
THE PAST CONTINUOUS TENSE IS USED TO EXPRESS AN ACTION IN PROGRESS DURING A PAST TIME.
Both tenses THE PAST SIMPLE and THE PAST CONTINUOUS are used in combinations in narratives to express the
following ideas :
1. Use the past simple + past simple to talk about a sequence of events
Example : “ I got home from work and I phoned Peter”
2. Use the past continuous + past simple combo to talk about an ongoing action that was interrupted by
another event.
Example: “ When I phoned Peter, he was having dinner”
3. Use the past continuous + past continuous to describe two simultaneous events (=two events that
were happening at the same time).
