In Memoriam
For this issue, the Marvel Superheroes
Unofficial Canon Project proudly
presents a guide to the characters and
setting of Earth-99101, one of the most
interesting alternate timelines that you
may have never heard of! This issue’s
been in the works for a while now –
almost a year ago, in fact. While there
are a number of reasons why it’s taken
so long to put together (mostly having
to do with a cross-country move by the
author), the decision to release it now
is, sadly, a timely one. For Earth-
99101 is the brainchild of beloved
comics penciller, Carlos Pacheco, who
passed away on November 9, 2022.
Best known to U.S. fans as the
penciler on Kurt Busiek’s 1998-99
miniseries Avengers Forever, Spanish-
born artist Pacheco first gained
widespread recognition for his artwork
on Marvel UK titles. In 1996, the
comics news magazine Dolmen
named Pacheco its Best Spanish
Creator. That same year, Wizard
named Pacheco the Newcomer of the
Year and included him in its list of the
Top Ten Artists from 1997 to 2001,
when he was ranked in the Number
One spot. In the years that followed,
Pacheco consistently won accolades
within the comic book industry,
including a nomination along with
Busiek in 2001 for an Eisner Award,
for Best Limited Series for their work
on Arrowsmith. Pacheco was equally
lauded in his native Spain and home
town, for his accomplishments as one
of the first Spanish-born artists to
make a major impact in that country. In
September 2022, Pacheco announced
on his Facebook page that he had
been diagnosed with amyotrophic
lateral sclerosis. Sadly, he passed
away two months later at the age of
60.
Iberia Inc. was a Spanish superhero

Marín and Carlos Pacheco. It. was
created as part of a project for the
Comics Forum imprint in 1992 that
never saw the light. Later, it was
intended to make a miniseries in
Marvel UK (they appeared as a cameo
in Avengers Forever, a miniseries for
Marvel in which Carlos Pacheco
worked) and ended up being published
by the Laberinto de Planeta collection,
in 1997. The artists were Rafa Fonteriz
and Jesús Yugo.
Spain’s answer to the
Avengers?
Iberia Inc. was a Spanish superhero
comic created and scripted by
Pacheco and writer and co-plotter
Rafael Marín. It was created as part of
a project for the Comics Forum imprint
in 1992 that never saw the light. Later,
it was intended to make a miniseries in
Marvel UK (they appeared as a cameo
in Avengers Forever, a miniseries for
Marvel in which Carlos Pacheco
worked) and ended up being published
by the Laberinto de Planeta collection,
in 1997. The artists were Rafa Fonteriz
and Jesús Yugo.
Only six issues were published (plus a
chip book and an album compilation)
and it tells the adventures of a group of
contemporary superheroes at the
service of the Spanish government:
Trueno, Lobisome, Melkart, Aquaviva,
Drac de Ferro, Dolmen, Trasnu and
Traka. Juan Pedro Lázaro, formerly
the superhero Flechita, at the service
of the Franco government, was the link
with the Spanish government. The
miniseries also featured another group
of Spanish superheroes, the Triada
Vértice, who would later have their
own miniseries.
The project was originally conceived
as the Spanish branch of The
Avengers. In the 1980s, the comic
book industry was in pretty good
health, and flourishing in Spain.

Antonio Martin, editorial director of
Forum (the branch of Planeta that was
then published by Marvel in Spain) had
achieved success in producing high-
quality, American-style Spanish comic
books. Martín turned to Pacheco and
Marín to commission a project: to draw
a group of superheroes that appeared
as a supplement within the pages of
Patrulla X for the rest of the important
collections of the Spanish edition.
However, the project never
materialized. Pacheco jumped to
Marvel UK, the European and British
line of Marvel (who also employed
Spanish artist Salvador Larroca),
where the proto-project of a "Spanish
supergroup" seemed viable. Marín and
Pacheco developed the concept
background while working on other
assignments, and it almost came to
pass under Marvel UK, when the
comic book crisis started in the U.S.
The comic industry implosion forced
Marvel UK to close, and Iberia Inc.
remained in limbo.
After several years, in 1996, Antonio
Martín convinced Planeta to give the
green light to create a label to
generate comics by national authors.
The Labyrinth imprint was born,
framing Spanish series such as
Checkmate, Ánibal Gris, Desafio, Yinn,
Triada Vértice and, of course, Iberia
Inc.
Why are they canon?
The story of the Earth-99101
characters would have simply been a
Marvel pitch that never came to pass
and was taken to another company,
had Pacheco not been a contributing
artist on the Avengers Forever
miniseries. Pacheco snuck a cameo
appearance of Triada Vértice in issue
#2, and Iberia, Inc. fought alongside
the 616 Avengers in the climactic final
battle in issues #11 and 12. So
ironically, Pacheco’s original concept
of a “Spanish Avengers” came full
circle, and finally became Marvel
canon.
Without Pacheco’s presence, it’s
unlikely that we will ever see Iberia,
Inc. in official canon, though, at least
not with their original names and
costumes. For example, the Avengers
Index identifies Trueno only as
"Spanish cyborg," noting that he
“resembles a character Carlos
Pacheco drew for Spanish comics."
The Index did know exactly who he
was, but had to hedge around explicit
identification because of potential
copyright concerns. Any future
appearances of Iberia, Inc. will
probably be confined to cameo and
Easter-egg appearances. Still, the
Iberia, Inc. timeline was eventually
assigned its own reality number, Earth-
99101, confirming their existence in
the Marvel multiverse. And there’s
nothing to stop a GM from using the
characters in a game – Earth-99101
could be a fun setting to visit.
Earth-99101
The universe of Earth-99101, home of
Iberia, Inc. is particularly interesting in
that it represents more than a “Spanish
Avengers” universe. The timeline itself
has a detailed history, branching from
the emergence of superbeings during
the Spanish Civil War, concurrent with
the Golden Age of U.S. comic books.
The writers add depth and complexity
through fictional articles, newspaper
clippings, etc., much in the same way
that Alan Moore gave life to
Watchmen’s Minutemen.
Although the characters at first glance
appear to be imitations of American
counterparts, the series draws from
Spanish folklore, mythology, and pop
culture to lend itself to a setting fully
steeped in the particulars that make up
Spain and its history. What's more,
each character comes from a different
region of Spain: Dolmen comes from
the Balearic Islands, Traka from
Valencia, Aquaviva and Melkart from
Andalusia, and Trasnu is Asturian,
each identified with certain areas of
the country reflected in the design of
the suit, name, and concept. At the
same time, the writers manage to
avoid regional stereotypes with

dialogue and motivations that lend
individuality to its cast of characters.
Earth-99101’s place in Marvel
continuity is a little confusing, having
come full circle as a proposed Spanish
Avengers, to a Marvel U.K.
international team, to an Avengers-like
team under Spanish publication, and
finally (for now) as a mainstream
Marvel alternate timeline. This article
assumes that the Earth-99101
characters and events are identical to
those portrayed in the Spanish-made
Iberia, Inc. and associated titles –
otherwise, this would be a pretty short
article, and there’s no indication to the
contrary.
What this means for the presence of
other Marvel characters on Earth-
99101 is open to interpretation, since
we haven’t really seen it in Marvel
comics outside of the appearance of
the core teams in Avengers Forever.
Some of the characters seem to be
either inspired by, or outright
duplicates, of established Marvel
characters, and may actually be the
99101 versions of 616 characters –
supported by the fact that Pacheco
has said as much in online forums
(see comments on Loup Garou and El
Burlador, for example). Pacheco has
also said that if his original pitch for a
Spanish Avengers had come to pass,
there would have naturally been
appearances by other residents of the
Marvel Universe. For example, the
scientists who found Melkart in the first
issue would have been accompanied
by members of Excalibur at the time: it
would have been Kitty Pryde who,
when touching and phasing through
the coffin, was to wake up Melkart.
Iberia, Inc. was also filled with
homages to Spanish comic books from
the Golden Age to the present, which
opens up a whole lot of characters and
potential continuity snarls if you go
through the sixdegrees-of-separation
route. Personally, I think the setting
works best when keeping the focus on
the main characters and the
alternatetimeline that makes the team
unique.

Iberia, Inc.’s base is located on the Isla
de la Cartuia, an island off of Seville,
Spain. Their headquarters, originally
built for Expo 92, is a sentient
building, augmented with technology
developed by Drac de Ferro.
History
Earth-99101 diverged from Earth-616
during the Spanish Civil War of 1936.
Heroes such as the swordsman El
Burlador began to appear during this
universe’s Golden Age. After the
Spanish Civil War, two groups of
superheroes were formed, one more
linked to the Franco regime and
another to the resistance. The
ramifications of this developed into the
emergence of dozens of heroes past
and present, until finally, Iberia Inc.,
Earth-99101’s version of the Avengers,
was formed at the service of the
Spanish government.
In the 1950s, Nazi scientist refugees in
Spain, protected by the Franco regime,
used genetic engineering to create the
first Spanish superheroes: the
"Imperial Falange" (Imperial Phalanx),
including Crusade, Alcazar, and
Numancia, among others, dedicated to
fighting "evil": communists, reds,
freemasons, trade unionists, etc.
In 1965 the anti-Franco El Escuadrón
Guernica emerged, formed by heroes

with political background opposing the
fascist regime. The team consisted of
Alcotán, Clavel ("Carnation"), Espada
("Sword"), Camisa Blanca ("White
Shirt"), Paloma Roja ("Red Dove"),
and Libertad ("Liberty"). Named by the
press after the town that was brutally
bombed by German planes on behalf
of the Spanish fascists during the
Spanish Civil War in the 1930's, the
team unsuccessfully confronted the
Imperial Falange. The Regime
contracted with "Captain Fury" (a
supersoldier created by Spanish
scientists) and "Flechita" (a young boy
with empathic powers). "Flechita"
would later become "Flecha Azul" and
later "Flecha". By 1977, with the arrival
of democracy, he retired and ended up
with a high position in the Ministry of
the Interior, in the first governments of
Suárez.
During the 1960s and 70s, Capitan
Furia (Captain Fury) was the official
hero of the Fascist regime which ruled
Spain, alongside his sidekick Flechita.
He was a "supersoldier" created using
technology provided during the
Second World War by the Spanish
Fascist's allies in Nazi Germany. Furia
killed himself in 1974 after being
involved in a fraudulent construction
scandal and being accused of being a
homosexual.
In the 80s, and coinciding with the
entry of Spain into NATO, the
Government decided to create its own
group of superheroes: Iberia, Inc.,
formally constituted as a technological
development company, with public and
private capital, and whose secret base
is in the technological park of the Isla
de la Cartuja (Seville). Almost at the
same time an independent group
appeared - the "Triada Vértice.”
Earth-99101 has at least two other
similar realities in the Marvel
multiverse. Earth-20022 is the home to
several other characters from Planeta
titles, particularly the heroic trio of
Aníbal Gris, Sirio-10 and Fastial. Their
adventures have largely been self-
contained, but as they have crossed
over with Iberia, Inc., their home reality
likely includes alternate versions of
those who live in Earth-99101; Earth-
20022 is the official Marvel designation
for the Aníbal Gris characters. Earth-
98120 is another reality similar to
99101; this reality is shown to be an
alternate future of Earth-616 with an
Avengers team led by Songbird. On
Earth-98120, Mihura and Estigma
were among the anti-heroes recruited
into Oort the Living Comet’s Solar
Squadron; the other members of the
group, if any, are unrevealed.
It may be that Earth-98120 is a future
Earth-616 in which the 99101
characters coexist alongside those of
mainstream Marvel. Additionally, a
number of characters from Spanish
comics of past decades have been
said to be ancestors of Trueno, making
those realities tangential to 99101, if
not 616 by association. It may be that
there are even more universes yet
unrevealed that are closer to Iberia,
Inc.'s than they are to the mainline
Avengers.

armor allows it to change form in a

Its shifting shape leads some people to
assume it is alive, and the gargoyle-

HISTORY
In the 23rd century, techno-thief Aida
Serrat stole a suit of liquid metal armor
from the villainous Mascheratta group,
who had in turn taken it from the
corpse of the fallen hero Drac de
Ferro, a.k.a. the Catalonian aristocrat,
scientist and businessman Jaume
Serrat i de la Casa. Fleeing the law by
traveling back in time to the modern
day with the armor, Aida became the LOBISOME
new/first Drac de Ferro and joined
Iberia, Inc. Keeping her identity (and STATISTICS
gender) a closely guarded secret, she
took the young Jaume, her ancestor, F IN (40)
under her wing as her protege, leading A AM (50)
some to mistakenly believe he is the S RM (30)
man behind the mask. However, Drac E RM (30)
de Ferro alone knows the full truth; she R RM (30)

ADDITIONAL NOTES
The lobisome is a version of the
werewolf myth specific to Galicia, a
Celtic-influenced region of Spain.
Werewolf folklore in Galicia specifies
that the seventh child of any union is
likely to be afflicted with a curse. If the
child is a girl, she’s liable to become a
witch; if a boy, a werewolf. The
godfather may ward off the curse by
saying certain prayers at the baptism.
Generally the curse doesn’t manifest
until later in life. An afflicted werewolf
will feel compelled to undress at a
crossroads and wallow in the mud. If a
wolf has already wallowed there, the
transformation occurs and the
werewolf uncontrollably attacks and
eats defenseless people and babies.
The most reliable way to reverse the
curse at this point is to take the
discarded clothing and burn it. Jacinto
has not displayed any of these
weaknesses other than the curse of
lycanthropy itself, so it is unknown to
what extent the lobisomes of Earth-
99101 follow traditional Galician lore.
ROLE-PLAYING NOTES
Jacinto fights with a fierce, wolf-like
nature that belies a shy, poetic
personality and intellectual nature.
HISTORY
Jacinto Larrán is the seventh child of a
seventh child of a seventh child, which
resulted in his curse of lycanthropy. A
poet and teacher, at the age of 30 he
discovered that he was a werewolf. He
became the scourge of Galician drug
traffickers before joining Iberia Inc.

capabilities are unknown; the powers
listed below are confirmed; these
powers will only work for Melkart
although unlike Mjolnir, the scepter

HISTORY
In ancient times, Melkart or Melqart
was the tutelary god of the Phoenician
city-state of Tyre and a major deity in
the Phoenician and Punic pantheons.
Often titled the "Lord of Tyre" (Ba‘al
Ṣūr), he was also known as the Son of
Baal or El (the Ruler of the Universe),
King of the Underworld, and Protector
of the Universe. He symbolized the
annual cycle of vegetation and was
associated with the Phoenician
maternal goddess Astarte. Reflecting
his dual role as both protector of the
world and ruler of the underworld, he
was often shown holding an Egyptian

one of his jobs, he began to fall for
Estigma, one of the team, even though
they were on opposing sides, and this
has made him question the career he
has chosen for himself. Gavilan claims
to have eliminated several presidents
of Third World countries, directors of
multinationals and mafia bosses. He is
an expert in weapons and martial arts,
and is armed with a bo staff.
LE LOUP GAROU
Victor Valjean, a k a Le Loup Garou,
was a French supervillain who went
straight in the final year of his life after
he discovered he was dying from
cancer. He took the son of a deceased
Spanish hero, Altocan (Gavilan), as his
apprentice during his last days. His

MASCHERATA
Mascherata is a mysterious Italian
villain team. Their name comes from
the Italian word for masquerade,
reflecting their renaissance motif. Their
members are Alondra (“Defender”,
also the word for a lark), Arlequín
(“Harlequin”), Belva (“Beast”), and Dux
(“Leader” or duke). They stole the
high-tech suit from the original Drac de
Ferro, but the suit was stolen back by
his future successor.

SANGRE
Sangre (“Blood”) is a member of the
superpowered group Jaque Mate
(“Checkmate”), another title published
by Planeta. Sangre appeared with
Iberia, Inc. in a Planeta crossover.
Little information is available about
her, but she appears to be Native
American with a feral demeanor. She
possesses claws, agility, and possibly
superhuman speed and reflexes.

SIGNO
Signo (meaning “sign” or “symbol”) is a
religious fanatic who has long toured
Spain recruiting henchmen for his
Brotherhood of Evil (La Cofradia de
Mal). He has the powers to provoke

SANTA COMPAÑA
The Santa Compaña ("Holy
Company") is a deep-rooted mythical
belief in rural northwest of Iberia:
Galicia, Asturias (Spain) and Northern
Portugal. Although many different
versions of the Santa Compaña can be
found, the common belief is that of a
procession of the dead (or a
procession of souls that are in torment)
that wander through the village paths
of a parish beginning at midnight
wearing white, hooded cloaks. The
Santa Compaña's purpose is to
announce death and its primary
mission is to visit homes where death
is due.

In the Iberia, Inc. universe, the Santa

Compaña was witnessed by
Lobisome. This raises many questions
about the nature of the afterlife in the
Iberia, Inc. world, its relationship to
other dimensions, the fate of souls in
the Earth-99101 universe, etc.
