Lara’s nephew, Alex, studies at MIT. He is going to graduate in engineering next year. Alex’s vacation is
going to begin soon and he wants to visit Rio de Janeiro. Lara knows the city because she sometimes goes there on
business. Today Alex is at Lara’s house. He is planning on going to Rio de Janeiro and wants some suggestions for
places to visit.

― So, are you going to Rio on your next vacation?

― Yeah, but I don’t know exactly what to do there.

― Oh, really? Rio is famous for its beautiful beaches. It is summer now in South America. You can go to
Copacabana, lie on the beach and get a tan.

― Good idea! I like hot weather. What else can I do in Rio?

― There are many museums and art galleries in Rio. Some are downtown and you can go there by subway.
You can visit the Cultural Center of Bank of Brazil. You can also go to the Modern Art Museum. It is next to a
monument dedicated to honor the Brazilian soldiers in the Second World War.

― Are there other monuments in Rio?

― Yeah! Be sure to see Christ the Redeemer. It is on top of Corcovado Mountain. You can look at the city
from there and see how beautiful Rio is. You can also go to Sugarloaf Mountain.

― What are cariocas like?

― Cariocas are very nice people. They love soccer, samba and beach, of course. They generally help tourists,
but be careful with your things when you are on the streets.

― Is violence still a problem in Rio?

― Rio is a big city. All big cities have problems. Now there are many police officers on the streets and in the
slums. I think you’re not going to see violence in Rio.

― Thank you. I have enough information. I’m going to work on my travel plans now. I think I’m going to
spend one week in Rio and three days in Salvador.

― Salvador is a nice city in the Northeast part of Brazil. The weather is always hot there. You’re going to like
it too.
