1. Notes on material and cutting gas

The intrinsic properties of the material and the quality of the cutting
gas are a key factor affecting laser cutting results.

Material used for the data Mild steel:

in this collection The cutting and piercing parameters given in the data collection were
determined using QRSt37-2 with a pickled and lightly oiled surface.

Stainless steel:
The cutting and piercing parameters given in the data collection were
determined using 1.4301 (X5CrNi 1810) grade steel.

Aluminium alloys:
The cutting and piercing parameters given in the data collection were
determined using AlMg3 and AlMgSi1 qualities.

The cutting and piercing parameters, especially the cutting speed,

must be adjusted accordingly if other materials are used !

Materials recommended Where the sheet thickness exceeds 12 mm, only single or double
for mild steel in the killed steel should be used. This is because impurities in steel cast in
12 - 20 mm range an unkilled state adversely affect the cutting results.

Where the sheet thickness exceeds 15 mm, a close-grained mild steel

QStE 260, 340 or 420 TM is recommended. The surface of this
material does not have to be retouched if a thin, non-scaling,
homogeneous oxide layer is present. Some steel producers now offer
fine-grain steels which lend themselves especially well to laser cutting.
Examples:
❑ Rautaruuki, product name "RAEX 250 LASER"

Note:
The surface of this mild steel is smooth and even, with lettering,
while the underside is somewhat rougher. It is very important to
load the sheet correctly (with the smooth, marked side facing up)
as the cut quality may otherwise suffer.

The following mild steels are also suited for laser cutting but no
broad-based test values are available yet for them:

❑ Voest Alpine, designation "Laser cutting quality"

❑ Thyssen, product name "Thermocut" and "Lasercut"

For laser cutting in the thick plate range of 12 -20 mm, a virtually
scale-free, rolled mild steel RQSt37.2 (material designation: EN 10025
FE 360 B FN KQ) with low silicon and manganese content is
recommended. This material enables machining of narrow contours,
yields a visually finer cut, a cut edge with less roughness coupled with
greater process reliability and reduced setup work.

Cutting copper Cutting of copper should not be attempted until you have attended the
"Cutting Technology" training course.
Copper may be cut only with oxygen (O2); never use nitrogen (N2).
Due to the risk of reflection in the event of a cutting flaw (damage to
the optics), caution must be exercised when cutting copper. For this
reason, make very sure that "MD65 Upper power limit monitoring" is
correctly set in the laser machine data:

Thick plate machining on The TLF 3000t or TLF 3800t is mandatory for processing mild steel
the TC L6030 thicker than 15 mm. Only a laser output of at least 3 kW can
guarantee safe and reliable processing throughout the entire working
range. Processing is permitted in the work area between X2000 and
X6000.

2. Piercing and approach

2.1 Piercing modes

Depending on material and workpiece contour, different options are

available for piercing.

The piercing mode can be selected to reflect the customer's optimiza-

tion criteria (e.g. to achieve short production times, or piercing
carefully to avoid damage to the material, etc.).

D203E1 Data collection 3

Piercing in ramp mode A starting hole for laser cutting can be produced without damage to
the material in ramp mode. For this purpose, the laser power is
increased over a programmed time interval and then maintained at the
given level.

Piercing prevents damage to the focussing optics and assures the

material is not scorched inadvertently.

Up to 99 different piercing cycles can be stored in the control system

of the laser.

The following parameters must be defined for each cycle (Fig. 5783E)
and input directly at the laser control.

Advantages:
❑ Careful, precision piercing with power increase in conformity with
the active ramp cycle
❑ Minimal slag formation
❑ This is the only way to make a start hole identical in size to the
width of the kerf. In all other piercing modes, craters of varying
widths will result at the start hole.
❑ In oxide-free cutting of aluminium alloys with lasers of a power
rating under 3 kW, O2 must be used if reliable piercing is to be
ensured.
Danger from reflection if N2 is used for piercing.
❑ For small contours in stainless steel, a start hole is produced with
minimal ejection of material. This prevents nozzle wear when
processing small contours and guarantees process reliability.

From the positioning standoff, the Z axis goes to piercing standoff,
where the beam is ignited. At the same time, with height regulation
active, cutting standoff is assumed, and the start hole generated.
Processing starts as soon as the cutting height is reached.

☞ A new nozzle should be used since pitting and fluting of the

nozzle can cause malfunctions in height regulation.

Advantages:
❑ Speeds up machining of thin sheets since time savings of about
50 % are achieved with this piercing method as compared to
conventional piercing.

2.2 Approach strategies

Depending on the material, sheet gauge and workpiece shape,

different strategies are recommended for contour approach.

2.2.1 Approach with pre-cutting

In approach with pre-cutting, the material next to the contour is

pierced in ramp mode. A "preliminary cut" then takes place, i.e. a few
millimeters (varies with the sheet thickness) are cut at reduced cutting
speed.
The head then returns to the start hole at the previous positioning
speed, and the contour is then approached at the full cutting speed as
specified in the technology table.

2.2.2 Approach strategy II (approach at piercing

height)

Approach strategy II is the current strategy for contouring in high

pressure cutting in material thicknesses which require approach at
reduced speed.

The cutting head remains at piercing height while approaching the

contour and is positioned to cutting standoff only when the approach
has been completed. No T-table change takes place between
approach and cutting.

Application together with The advantages of approach at piercing height (Strategy II) can also
older ToPs and software be used for contour machining in ToPs Versions < 3.11 in conjunction
versions: with machine software versions ≥6.5.
In this case, technology tables are still changed between approach
and cutting. The T-tables for Approach at reduced speed must be
adapted accordingly.
Adopt all parameters from the contour machining table with the
following changes:

❑ Cutting standoff = Cutting standoff + piercing height from

contouring table
❑ Cutting speed = Approach speed from contouring table
❑ Piercing height = 0.1 mm

3. Vaporizing

3.1 Protective foil on stainless steel

If the foil coating does not adhere properly to the material, the strong
jet of gas generated during high pressure cutting may infiltrate
between the foil and the material, causing the foil to puff up.
In high pressure cutting, material up to 3 mm thick can be worked
without burring if the following conditions are met:

❑ The foil-coated material surface must face upward

❑ Polyethylene foil ≥ 90 µm thick
❑ Natural rubber as adhesive
❑ "Strong" adhesive property of foil
❑ If surface is polished, grain > 240

The foil can also be vaporized before piercing and cutting the material.

3.1.1 Vaporizing protective foil

The foil is vaporized only around the start hole or, if the foil is not too
"strongly" adhesive, the entire contour is traced before cutting,
vaporizing a path about 3 mm wide.
The parameters are valid for all laser types, independent of material
thickness.
Z-------------------------------------------?

@-------------------------------------------Y

Wider or narrower Where necessary, a wider vaporized path can be achieved by

vaporized path selecting a larger cutting standoff and increasing the laser power by
about 3 to 5 %. Conversely, to narrow the vaporizing path, a smaller
cutting standoff and lower laser power is required.

D203E1 Data collection 13

4. Marking

Workpieces are marked by producing a change of color on the

material surface.
As the amount of material removed in marking is minimal, a coat of
paint renders the abrasion completely invisible.

Parameters for marking in Cutting speed: generally 3 m/min

5. Point marking

Two types of point marking are differentiated:

❑ Circular point marking
❑ Dot marking
In ToPs, "Circular point marking" is always active as default.

5.1 Circular point marking

The control must execute two small circles for each point when point
marking mild steel and stainless steel.
In mild steel, the same circle of 0.6 diameter is executed twice.
In stainless steel, however, two concentric circles are needed, the first
with a diameter of 0.3 mm and the second with a diameter of 0.6 mm.

☞ A light precipitation forms on the sheet surface during point

marking. While this precipitation can be easily removed with a
tissue paper from mild steel, it adheres more strongly to
stainless steel. In subsequent drilling, it is removed by the
cutting edges of the drill without causing the drill to run off
center.

8. Working with technology tables

For the NC program to run smoothly at the machine, such laser

technological data as material thickness, cutting gas or the gating
frequency must be known. This data is retrieved from technology
tables stored in the controller.
Technology tables comprise two pages. The first page contains the
header parameters, general parameters and the cutting parameters.
The second page contains the piercing parameters.

10. Overview of cutting table collections

The following cutting tables contain the parameters recommended for

laser machining.
The introductory schematics are designed to guide the user to the
desired table. Note that a distinction is made between different
materials. Further criteria for choosing the correct table include:

❑ Standard pressure (O2) or high pressure (O2)

❑ the contour geometry (small/large/medium) or in pipe machining)

☞ Laser output specification in watts is obligatory. The exact per-

centage for this laser power must be established at the
respective laser.

☞ To facilitate table management and assignment in programming

systems, each table is assigned a number.

10.1 Notes on parameter Setting Dimension

Defined setting dimensions are listed in the tables instead of a focus

range. These setting dimensions are based on experience in the field
and values gathered from many machines. It may, however, still be
necessary to make certain adjustments for your machine.

34 Data collection D203E1

10.2 Notes on parameter "Rules"

The number indicated in parameter "Rules" refers to the rules in the

database of the ToPs 100 programming system. Rules names are
made up as follows:
Z-------------------------------------------?
3 Four digits + code + (version index) 3
C-------------------------------------------4
3 5001 x (y.z) 3
@-------------------------------------------Y
Codes The code shows which conditions are valid for this rule.
What the codes stand for:

1 Corner: Round
(Corners are rounded)
2 Corner: Loop
(Produces sharp corners)
3 Corner: No rounding - no looping
(normal corners)
4 Corner: Round - Vaporize (foil) contour
(The sheet has a foil coating, the corners are rounded)
5 Corner: Round - SprintLas cutting/marking
(The corners are rounded/SprintLas processing for cutting and
marking)
6 Corner: Round - Table for large, medium and small contours,
ContourLas processing of small contours)

Example If rule number 50013 is selected, neither a loop is made at the corner
nor is the corner rounded.

Version index This indicates the machine software version as of which the rule can
be used. Rules without a version index can be used with all machine
software versions.

D203E1 Data collection 35

10.3 Table collections for pipe machining

In pipe machining, contours on round pipes or at corner radii on

rectangular pipes are output in the NC program as polygons
consisting of increments of varying lengths.

ToPs 400 ToPs 400 automatically determines the maximum feedrate for each
polygon. Although a contour may be large (in area), its processing
depends on the number of increments it contains: hence it may be cut
with parameters for large, medium or even small contours, as deemed
fit.

To prevent a large contour (large in area) from always being

processed at feedrates for small contours, tables for "medium
contours" have been created for each material and sheet thickness,
offering feedrates between those of large and small contours.

☞ Corner processing on square tubes of mild steel entails a

certain risk of burring and increased roughness. Burring may
also occur in stainless steel and aluminium alloys.

Technology table numbers Dedicated technology table numbers are assigned for pipe machining
(medium contour). These numbers are not identical to the numbers for
large, medium and small contours in flat machining.

* In material thickness ≥2 mm, you must always choose between cutting and piercing "Gas purge".
When piercing with O2, star-shaped slag collects on the sheet surface and must subsequently be removed. Oxide forms
when starting to cut after piercing. This can be avoided to a large extent by also purging between piercing and cutting.

In material thickness 6-12 mm medium contour, piercing normally takes place with full power. If the pierced crater is too
large (for example, if the surface is dry), power must be reduced for piercing (parameter: see Small contour).

* The material surface must be free of scales and lightly oiled. R3 must be programmed as the corner radius. If small parts
are nested too closely on the sheet, the material may overheat, resulting in poor cut quality! On the TC L 3030 without
AutoLas, the cutting data specified for material thickness 20 mm are valid only for a reduced work area of 2000 mm x 1000

In material thickness 6-12 mm medium contour, piercing normally takes place with full power. If the pierced crater is too
large (for example, if the surface is dry), power must be reduced for piercing (parameter: see Small contour).

* On the TC L 3030 without AutoLas, the specified cutting data listed for material thickness 6 to 12 mm apply only to a
reduced working range of 2000 mm x 1000 mm. The acceleration rate must be reduced to 0.05 m/s2 for 8 mm, to 0.03 m/s2
for 10 mm and to 0.01 m/s2 for 12 mm sheets. Process reliability is attained by reducing the acceleration. Material 10 and
12 mm thick may be cut only with AutoLas. Burr can form in material thickness 8 to 12 mm.

* In material thickness ≥2 mm, you must always choose between cutting and piercing "Gas purge". Reason: Gas change from
N2 to O2 in "Point marking" in material thickness ≥2 and in Piercing for small contours in material thickness ≥4.
When piercing with O2, star-shaped slag collects on the sheet surface and must subsequently be removed. Oxide forms
when starting to cut after piercing. This can be avoided to a large extent by also purging between piercing and cutting.

* The material surface must be free of scales and lightly oiled. R3 must be programmed as the corner radius. If small parts
are nested too closely on the sheet, the material may overheat, resulting in poor cut quality! On the TC L 3030 without
AutoLas, the cutting data specified for material thickness 20 mm are valid only for a reduced work area of 2000 mm x 1000
mm.
