Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

INTRODUCTION

This research focuses on the behavior and knowledge of the residents in a community

about global warming. The researchers conducted this project to help and inform the

community in the problems in their surroundings and the things that they need to do to

sustain the needs of their community. The people in the community will benefit since this

project can be used as a basis to conduct community-initiated projects and information

drive in connection to the mitigation of the negative effects of global warming.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Global warming is the increasing temperature of the earth’s atmosphere that is caused by

pollution (most by land and water). It occurs when the carbon dioxide and other air

pollutants, substances and gases combine in the atmosphere and get absorbed by sunlight

and radiation that will result on increased in the temperature of earth’s atmosphere.

In the past years, global warming increased at the fastest rate in recorded history. It

makes the earth weaker and unhealthy because of the temperature that suddenly change.

Global warming is mostly caused by human activities that destroys nature like burning of

fossils fuels and methane and other greenhouse gases that brings up into the atmosphere.

Most international scientist agreed that the main caused of global warming are human

activities.

According to NOA and NASA, 2016 is the worldwide hottest year because the

temperature increase in 1.78 degrees F(0.99 degrees C).

This project aims for the residents of a community to understand and be inform on the

current rate of the global warming and sustain the needs of their community by applying

the knowledge that they need to be responsible for the welfare of their surroundings. The

researchers want to know the behavior and test the knowledge of the resident in the

community.

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this research is to document community knowledge on global warming in

order to know their perception on the worsening effects of global warming, which then

becomes a basis in planning and implementing community-based information campaign

and environment-friendly activities to help eradicate problems brought by global

warming

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study focuses on the knowledge of residents of community Mawaque Resettlement

regarding global warming, and that the data gathered is applicable only on said residents

and does not represent other communities. It is important to inform the community about

the current problems in their surroundings and help them to acquire more learning’s and

apply it to themselves.

The respondents of this research were composed of residents in the community aged 18

and above, because they can easily understand the importance of this research and they

are more capable of doing things right.

The result of this project is applicable to resident of community Mawaque Resettlement

because they are the once who will fully benefit from this project. The research consider

working on this topic because it gives the idea of being responsible to protect things that

can be considered our source of life and it can help find solution to the problems of the

community.

In this project the researchers considered the policies and rights of the residents in the

community because it is their own will as a person and as a residents in their community

to participate in this study. The researchers invited and inspired them.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study can be useful to other communities in adopting policies concerning global

warming It is important that people must know the proper ways to take care of their

communities. They must be aware and responsible such as in proper disposal of garbage

to lessen the effects of global warming.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

What are the common knowledge and behavior of people about global warming?

The knowledge that people learned are commonly from information made available to the

general public, subject sources such as the internet popular press and interpersonal

communication. (McBean and Hengeveld 2000)

Many studies have been undertaken to determine lay-people’s concern and perceived risk

of climate change (Lorenzoni and Pidfeon 2006) as well as their knowledge or opinion on

climate change (Pruneau et al. 2001). Furthermore, knowledge of people regarding global

warming are not fully understand by other people specially the residence of a community.

They are usually lack basic information and awareness of global warming and hope it can

influence us.

People don’t recognize the consequence of environmental problems in a environmental

way. For example, people in Britain say that climate change is the large majority problem

in their country, some British people brought fuel-efficient cars and some of them say

that they try to use they are less than before. Studies in several countries says that the

more people view environmental problems as serious, the more they can take appropriate

actions.

What is the current condition of our planet in terms of the issue on global warming?

According to NASA, the earth’s climate has changed throughout history. The earth’s

climate increased with the surface temperature of 2.0 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 degree

celcius) because the carbon dioxide increased and other greenhouse effect caused by

human activity absorbed by the atmosphere.

The current condition of earth is earth-orbiting satellites and other technological advances

so that scientist can enable to see the big picture and collect information about our planet

and its condition in climate on a global scale. The information collected over many years

from now, it reveals the sign of a changing climate. The heat- trapping nature of CO2 and

other gases have the ability to affect the way of transfer of infrared energy though the

atmosphere is the scientific basis of many instruments flown by NASA. The increased

level of greenhouse gases must cause the earth’s increasing of heat to warm in response.

How does knowledge on global warming affect a community?

Global warming impact effects climate change on the people especially in the

environment, it increases the temperature of the atmosphere caused by greenhouse effect.

It is important to know and be aware of this matter and be prepared to it

If global warming still continues it can caused many disruption in human life around the

world. Some example of this is health condition, you can get diseases like vascular

diseases, infectious diseases and other disease that can affect your healthy lifestyle, so

being aware of this can avoid you to have a sickness. Furthermore, the global warming

can also affect our source of food that can cause us to poverty because of the lock of food

that sustain our everyday life, rising of sea level, melting of ice, and more powerful

storms causing for the people to change their way of living.

These are some consequences of global warming, so to prevent it we need accurate

learning regarding this issue. It is good to be well educated and knowledgeable for us to

be ready and well informed about the effect of global warming. It is also the best way to

help our earth.

Having a knowledge about global warming people must make a smart decisions today

that can help to them and to protect their lives and coastal property, and to decrease the

high- risk flood areas.

Climate change and its effects are challenging problems especially for the future

generations of young people. It is important to understand the consequences and

mechanism of climate change. If people create a sophisticated understanding about global

warming, they will get well-informed about sudden change of temperature of the planet.

How does global warming affect the behavior of the members of community?

Global warming affects the whole planet and society and it will continue due to the

absorbance of greenhouse by the atmosphere. Many human actions affect the things that

people value causing them to change their way of living, they made numerous other

adjustment in themselves and collective behavior due to what they experience because of

the global warming.

When people experience environmental change, their knowledge increase because they

acquire learnings that they can apply if the environmental change will occur again.

People learned things that they can do during the environmental change happen. But

human action can also affect human responses incidentally depending on their purpose.

Changes in environment that is incidentally have an impact to human responses to global

warming. Human action sometimes are the common source of global warming and it can

be helpful to human but not in the planet.

Global warming affect the environment, it also affect the people personally. For example,

a person who believes that climate change will result in bringing flood to his city have a

fearful behavior about this prospect. Appraisal of the situation ( the seriousness of

environmental problems, what peoples do, the effectiveness of alternative actions, etc)

may also affect the behavior directly. A person’s evaluation of the situation are more

likely influenced by her personal perspectives and social influences to where she is

exposed. For example, her knowledge regarding environment may affect her view of

seriousness of problems in environment and norms of the people with whom she

associates can affect and influence her appraisal of her own responsibility for helping to

find a solution to solve such problems. As with many other behaviors, what most people

do often can affect their personal feelings and emotions.

On the argument that human cause global warming, 97% to 98% of scientist agreed with

this, because of the gases that released into the atmosphere creating a greenhouse effect.

With this, the heat is being trapped resulting to a global warming. The rise of carbon

dioxide (CO2) of the atmosphere over the last 100 years is because of the human actions

and natural climate could not achieve this. Furthermore, the CO2 that absorbed by the

atmosphere of the earth is a specific type that’s being connected to the human activity.

On the argument that human do not cause global warming, 1,000 scientists agreed with

this because they say that the climate of the earth has a period of cooling and warming.

They also say that the increasing number of carbon dioxide do not cause global warming.

According to them, the global cooling and warming period are part of the natural

temperature of the earth, they state that the rate of climate change has decrease

dramatically, even if the CO2 continue to increase. Moreover, they also agree that it is

equally normal during these changing condition to have more strong hurricanes.

In this argument, they have stated causes of global warming. Other scientist agreed that it

is caused of human action, while others agreed that it is natural changing condition

because of the cooling and warming period of temperature of the earth. But this research

focuses to the human activity that causes global warming that changes the temperature of

the earth. Global warming is cause by the human because of the things that they do that

affect the earths condition. Human activities will cause many pollution matter like air

pollution, water, and land. When atmosphere absorb the greenhouse gases that humans

produce the it will build up in the atmosphere resulting the climate change to occur.

METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY

PARTICIPANTS

The target respondents in conducting a survey are 10 residents aged 18 and above in

community Mawaque, because they are more exposed and responsible to the current

condition of their community, and also to give them some knowledge about global

warming. The researcher will conduct a survey to know their ideas and behavior

regarding global warming.

MATERIALS

The research survey will contain questions answerable by the people in a community.

This are the following questions.

1. How long have you been residing in this community?

2. Have you encountered any disaster or other inconvenience since you lived here?

What re they?

3. What do you know about global warming?

4. What effects of global warming are you aware of?

5. What environmental and human risks do you know are caused by global

warming?

6. What have you done once you learned the negative impacts of global warming?

7. Have your community leaders done any project or activity in relation with

preventing the negative effects of global warming? If yes, what were these

projects/activities?

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

EXPERIENCE ON GLOBAL WARMING

Human beings have been encountering huge natural mass disasters since the dawn of

existence. According to a study conducted by the Geneva-based United Nations Office

for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR), Philippines is the fourth most disaster prone

country in the world. It also revealed that Philippines is one of the top 10 countries with

most number of people afflicted by such disasters--at staggering 130 billion.

Most of residents of community Mawaque Resettlement experience typhoons and floods

that affect their everyday life. It affects their way of living as residents of their

community but they faced it and survived.

PERSONAL KNOWLEDGE ON GLOBAL WARMING

Global warming is about climate change that we experience. According to the survey that

the researcher conducted, all of the respondents know the basic idea of global warming

they concluded that global warming is the cause of increasing temperature of the earth’s

surface, making the weather suddenly change from cold to hot and vice versa.

EFFECTS OF GLOBAL WARMING

Pollution is one of the effects of global warming. It makes the land, air and water not safe

and sustainable to use because of the chemicals that contaminate the natural environment.

According to Pure Earth, more than 200 million people worldwide are affected of the

toxic pollution that can cause diseases and cancers to the people that exposed to

pollution.

Drought is also one of the effects of global warming, because of the hot temperature of

the atmosphere plants are getting dry and will soon dead because of the high level of

temperature.

High level of temperature can cause different types of sickness like heat stock, heart

diseases, and skin cancer especially when a person is too much exposure to the hot

temperature of the sunlight and atmosphere.

CAUSES OF GLOBAL WARMING

Knowing the source of global warming can help the people to prevent the increasing

number of global warming in their community. The gas from the vehicles is one of the

causes of the global warming because it produces gas that are not safe for the atmosphere

to absorb. The gas from vehicles can cause air pollution and it is also one of the reasons

of hot temperature because the greenhouse gases blocking the natural atmosphere that we

have. Gas from vehicles cam also affect the health of the person who absorbed and makes

the carbon dioxide not safe for the people.

Too much use of chemicals is also one of the causes of having a global warming in a

community because the air absorbed the chemicals and will contaminant the air that

organisms needed to live. It will also affect the atmosphere that we have because the

chemicals that absorbed by the atmosphere can build up and block the safe air and natural

sunlight that good for the people.

Burning of plastics, fossil fuels, deforestation and not disposing of garbage to the proper

places can also cause global warming because it will result of pollution in land, water and

air that organisms need. According to Physicians for Social Responsibility this pollution

can cause asthma, exacerbate (worsen) a previously-existing respiratory illness, and

provoke development or progression of chronic illnesses including lung cancer, chronic

obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema and other lung diseases.

PREVENTION

Action of the Community

Global warming must be prevented, and people must do certain activities to prevent the

increasing number of global warming disasters in our world because it affects all living

things in the earth and makes the planet weak.

The following are ways to prevent global warming according to the survey.

 Dispose garbage properly.

 Sweep the garbage surrounding.

 Unite people how to prevent the effects of global warming.

 Inform others regarding to this issue.

 Avoid burning garbage and clean the environment.

 Beware of the sickness.

 Find a solution or way to prevent the global warming.

 Be a good citizen, do things that is good for the environment.

 Be careful and don’t decide easily.

 Follow the rules and regulation of the community.

 Discipline and act properly.

 Do your responsibility as a resident of your community.

It’s important to remember the equally vital contributions that can be made by private

citizens—“Change only happens when individuals take action,” according to Aliya Haq.

To change and help our planet, people must do necessary actions to save the planet.

PROJECTS

There are many activities that can help to prevent the increasing number of global

warming in a community. According to the respected respondents, anti-pollution act,

cleaning streets and drainage, providing trash cans, and planting trees lead by the officials

are the past activities that were done on their community o community. In these activities,

they also provide basic knowledge to make their community safe and maintain the

cleanliness but not all of the residents participate and some of them are not following the

rules provided by the officials. They are not well informed about the negative effects of

global warming in their community.

COMMUNITY LEARNING

People in Mawaque are requesting a learning to inform other residence in their

community about the negative effectS of the global warming in the community. They

request knowledge about the prevention and effect of global warming in the environment

and human health.

It is important to make them aware about the consequence of the global warming for

them to avoid and make solution to prevent it. They need this knowledge to keep them

safe and maintain the health of their community.

UNITY

Residents must know to help each other regarding to the prevention of global warming in

their community. Making project that can help to decrease the number of global warming

will also help the health of the planet. According to the respected participants, discipline

and concern is one of the most important things that a person must have to be a

responsible citizen of a community. It also needs unity and cooperation of the people to

make activities effective and will result good and safe environment for them.

To further achieve the objectives of this research, below are the findings on the research

questions:

What are the common knowledge and behavior of people about global warming?

Knowledge about global warming is needed to make your family members safe from the

negative effect of global warming. According to the result of the survey conducted by the

researcher, global warming is about the changing and increasing temperature of the earth

surface causing the earth’s sudden change of weather.

What is the current condition of our planet in terms of the issue on global warming?

Our planets becomes weaker because of the global warming, it affects the life of each

organism living in the earth. The earth’s weather are suddenly changing from cold to hot

temperature because of the greenhouse gases and chemicals that absorbed by the

atmosphere.

According to Joanna Haigh there has been a marked acceleration in global warming since

the mid-20th century with an average temperature increase of 1°C between 1961 and

2016 (measures against the pre-industrial period which serves as a reference). The effects

are clearly visible, one of the most remarkable being the sea level rise as the thermal

expansion of water due to this increased warming causes this water to take up more and

more of the ocean’s surface. The melting of the ice caps also contributes to this sea level

rise, and the gradual retreat of the summer Arctic sea ice is a further indication of global

warming. 

Our energy system is based on solar energy. The Earth absorbs heat and emits thermal

radiation into the atmosphere. Half of solar radiation is captured by the surface of the

Earth. Surface temperature therefore increases and produces heat radiation, of which 90%

is absorbed into the atmosphere. The atmosphere then reheats and feeds back into the

heat absorbed by the surface of the earth. But greenhouse gases trap thermal radiation

close to the surface of the Earth, as the atmosphere is essentially open to solar radiation

but not thermal radiation.

How does knowledge on global warming affect a community?

Having knowledge about global warming will make you aware about the negative impact

of it to the environment and human risk. When a person has an idea about the situation of

the earth regarding global warming, they can make activities that can help to decrease the

global warming in their community. In the result of the survey, researcher concluded that

the knowledge that his respondents have are only basic information about the global

warming. The residents still need information that can help them to be affected by the

global warming. When the residents have accurate knowledge about global warming,

they can make smart decision that they need. According to the participants, they are

suggesting knowledge that they thing their community people needs to make them inform

and be a responsible about the increase number of global warming.

How does global warming affect the behavior of the members of community?

Based on the survey that was conducted by the researcher, the global warming affects the

behavior of the members of community. Community is affected because of the negative

effect of it to the environment and human health. People react based on their individual

experience, the will learn different ways to defend the effect of global warming. Global

warming affect the environment and also personal behavior of the community, people

need to do numerous adjustment in their everyday living to survive the effect of the

global warming.

The participants react based on their own knowledge about the global warming, some

participants says that some people in their community are not well informed about global

warming so they don’t follow the rules in their community and makes activities that

affect the earths condition. Some participants request learning to make their residents

inform about the effect of global warming.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Global warming is about climate change from cold to hot and disaster that is made by

human activities and nature. But base on the result of this research it is actually cause by

the human action that destroy the cleanliness and healthiness of the nature who balance

the condition of the earth.

The result of this research are based on the own knowledge of the participants according

to the survey that was done by the researcher. People still need to know more about the

global warming to make them safe and responsible to their. They need to be well inform

and get accurate knowledge to help them and their society maintain the safe and fresh

environment they have. Residents are suggesting activities that can help to make their

community improve the cleanliness that they have, because according to some of them,

some residents in their community continue to throw garbage in the public places even if

the officials provide trash cans in each streets, also the river that they have has many

garbage because of the irresponsible people who throw their garbage in the river resulting

for the nature to be destroyed. Some people in their community experience flood because

the drainage that they have has many garbage that blocks the water to flow.

They also experience hot weather and sudden change of climate because of the gases that

blocks the atmosphere and contaminate the air that living things needed to breath.

Pollution is also of the reasons why we have global warming in the planet, throwing trash

in the surrounding can be the source of land and water pollution, gases and chemicals can

cause air pollution. This pollution affects the source of needs of living things especially

for the human and affect the health of the community and source of sickness for human

beings.

To avoid disaster, do activities that can save the community and planet, prevent effect of

the global warming and don’t waste things that people need to survive.

CONCLUSION

The researcher concluded that the main source of global warming are human action

because many people are irresponsible and they are not following the rules and regulation

in their community. They need proper learnings that they can apply to themselves and

share their acquired knowledge that hey learn. Researcher have learned that community

knowledge has a significant to the and importance to the community when they apply it

and do action.

This research can be use as a source of information and knowledge about the behavior of

the community about global warming. It can help to the other researcher that researching

for the knowledge and behavior of the community.

RECOMMENDATION

Researchers recommend to help the people to be inform and learning things that they can

use to help the earth and decrease the number of global warming. Make activities that can

provide the needs and prevent the effect of global warming, example of this is cleaning

the drainage and streets to reduce the garbage in the community. Researcher recommend

that officials must do something about this.

People must do action to make themselves safe from the negative effect of the global

warming.
