Accents

Read:
‘Accents’ is a motivational poem written by Denise Frohman, a renowned poet,
educator, performer and writer and talks about the beauty of accents. Accents
are beautiful because they remind us of who we are and where we come from
and it’s part of what makes us unique.

Think:
“Her accent is a stubborn compass always directing her towards home”
- Denise Frohman, Accents
• What does your accent sound like?
• How does your accent affect any new language that you might learn?
• Is one accent better than the other?
• Is it fair to discriminate against people based on their accents?

Do:
Studies show that singing in a foreign language can improve learning how to
speak it. So, learn to sing in a new language and check if your natural accent
influences how you pronounce the words!
Share a video of you singing a song in a language you have never spoken before.
How easy was it to pronouce those words?

Sign Language Buddies - Friendship

Read:
Some people may have hearing disabilities, making it harder for them to
communicate with other people. Therefore, knowing sign language can help
bridge that communication gap. People using sign language make shapes,
called signs, with their hands and arms. It’s also important for people without
hearing disabilities to learn sign language because it takes the pressure off
trying to hear words that are not coming in clearly.

Here is more about the history of sign language and its variations.

Think:
Blindness cuts us off from things, but deafness cuts us off from people.” - Helen
Keller
Why do you think it’s necessary to understand sign language? “My eye is my ear,
my hand is my mouth.” Is sign language a legitimate form of communication?
Why do you think there are cultural variations in sign language?

Do:
Learn a minimum of 3 sign language gestures and their meanings. Share a
video of you demonstrating these gestures and explaining their meanings.
