CAMEL Assignment

Objectives
• Estimate the cooling load in an apartment
• Learn how to use the software CAMEL
• Demonstrate the ability to carry out load estimation as a major part of the design
• Experience teamwork and experience the real-life work experience

Requirements
The project should be completed by a Group with 2-5 members. Each group is required to submit the
electronic Camel files for the project at the end of lecture time in Week 8.
Your project work should meet the requirements specified in the Instruction to Project.
You should submit one pdf file which includes:
• Printed output file of your Camel program including input data: building structure, materials,
orientation, occupancy, equipment, output data: grand, sensible, and latent heat gains; supply air
quantity.
• The air conditioning processes plotted on a psychometric chart, as one of the results of load
estimation.
Information About the Building and Design Requirements
An air conditioning system is required for an apartment. The drawing above shows the general floor layout
of this area. A commercial packaged unit with an air-cooled condenser will be selected. Mechanical
equipment will be mounted on the roof.
The air conditioning system is to be designed for summer only to maintain indoor temperature at 24
degrees and relative humidity ≤ 55% in most external ambient conditions. The by-pass factor is: 0.11
The building is basically of masonry construction with glass walling construction on the North-West and
South-West elevation. The balcony is fully shaded. The shading is 45 degrees inclined and 0.P transparent.
The building is located in Mascot, Sydney. The air-conditioned area is generally occupied 24 hours a day
The following information you may use in the cooling load estimation:

Occupancy 1 chair/bed/lounge = 1 person

Bedroom Occupancy: PQ% from 8:00-20:00
Living Room Occupancy: QP% from 20:00-8:00
Lighting 10 + P Watts/m2
