Introduction

Professional skills give students the opportunity to develop themselves in self-reflection by concentrating on the
following competences: managing, advising, research and professionalization. There are three dimensions in
professional skills: dealing with your own performance and your own functioning, with others and with tasks/work.

The goal of creating this portfolio is to provide me the chance to improve many aspects of my personality,
including self-reflection, feedback, insecurities, and emotions.
Other elements that are essential for development include communicating with teachers and students, updating
my professional knowledge, being on time and showing a commitment to improvement. I firmly believe that
developing specific skills is essential for effective self-reflection and communication.

The reason for writing this portfolio is to give me the opportunity to develop myself in a lot of areas such as
introspection, feedback, insecurities and my emotions.
Another thing that is important for development is communication with students, teachers, updating my
professional knowledge, arriving on time and visible commitment. It is crucial to develop certain areas for having a
successful communication and a great self reflection.

In the article of the core qualities, I have experienced the most growth. I have become aware of my core qualities
but also about my pitfalls. Faced with my pitfalls, I became more aware of what I needed to improve in order to
continue on my path to success. For this portfolio a lot of information was gathered by my own intuition as well as
information provided during the lessons of professional skills.

Growth can be seen throughout the portfolio. The last written article is of higher quality than the first because we
learned about effective communication and time management. These skills were used during the lessons and I was
able to immediately apply them in the exercises that comprise the portfolio. All of the exercises have one thing in
common: they are all related to professional skills.
‘Ferrari or Renault?’
A complex machine that is capable of putting a smile on your face everytime you hear it drive by or have the
chance of driving it. That is a feeling that we, car enthusiasts can never get enough of, a feeling that makes us
forget everything and focus on one thing, our dream car. Most of the time, a question like the one above will
give you an answer that you can already guess. But what did Maxim choose in this case? Will he rather choose
the Ferrari or the Renault?

Maxim is an eighteen year old student at HAN. He is

currently still looking for an apartment but that won’t
take him away from starting the education of his
dreams. “When I got told about automotive I was
basically instantly sold since I felt like it’d be more
enjoyable following my passion through my study”. In
his spare time he likes to cycle, the occasional bit of
gaming and loves to hear some music.

Talking about Automotive Engineering, he has a clear view on his strengths and his weaknesses. His strength,
which he can be really proud of, is that he is so passionate that he will keep going until he achieves his goals.
His weakness is that he has to put more attention to management of his time, planning and presentation. But
that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad trait, it’s the art of mastering it.

Maxim hopes that in the future he has acquired enough knowledge and
skills during his study, so that he earns the chance of getting a job he
always desired. Now the answer we were all waiting for. Maxim would
choose a Renault over a Ferrari. REALLY MAXIM? A Renault?

Core qualities
The two core qualities which fits the most to me are:
Ambitious and perfectionism. Both are core qualities which give me power and perseverance
to achieve whatever i want.

Ambitious
Ambition is the pursuit to achieve something, or to achieve a higher position, more power or
responsibility, a higher salary or another career goal.

What makes it specific to me? & What stands out?

It makes it specific to me, because i look forward to achieving the most and getting the best out
of myself regarding study, sports, and status. Accomplishing all my goals will give me self-
satisfaction. Trying to do more than i am required and always staying humble to the possibility
of not doing enough is what stands out on this quality of mine.

What makes you different from others?

I believe that having self confidence will automatically give me ambition, a more positive
mindset and gain energy and motivation to take action.

Perfectionism
Perfectionism means doing my best to do something as accurately, as well as possible. A
certain amount of perfectionism is certainly not wrong. It helps me bring out the best in myself.

What makes it specific to me? & What stands out?

It makes it specific to me, because a perfectionist's work has all those little details that set it
apart from the competition. It can be self-motivating and drive me to overcome adversity and
achieve success.

What makes you different from others?

I believe that i am very secure and precize in the work i do and that gives me the benefit of
being a perfectionist.

How to become a professional

of your own skills?

During the last five weeks we worked hard to develop our professional skills. The lessons of
professional skills gave us a clear vision at how to create a good interview, get familiar with core
qualities and taught us to give and receive feedback. In this article we are going to zoom in on one
dimension, dealing with your own performance and your own functioning, in other words reflecting on
my own skills.

Ferrari or Renault
The title of the article from the interview is called: Ferrari or Renault. So as you can see I immediately
used a choice question. Along with them, I also included suggestive, closed, and open questions. I
asked a variety of them, since they all had a different purpose and different effects on the dialogue. It
is also important to have an open attitude, that the person who you are interviewing feels comfortable
enough to reply to your questions. Those are the two important ingredients to write a good and
interesting article about an interview.

Qualities and learning points

During the exercise of the core qualities, I became more aware that qualities go together with learning
points. For every quality is a core quadrant, also called the allergy. Because I thought deeply about my
core qualities, I realized that those allergies are exactly the things where I am struggling with in my
daily life. Now I am aware of it, I can accept the challenge and work on my allergies. The awareness of
those allergies can help me to develop myself, to become a better person. Not only at school but also
in my private life.

What a solution, the DESC-model!

Since I got knowledge about the DESC-model, it is so much easier to give feedback. The DESC-model
describes perfectly the four steps which you have to follow to give good feedback to a person. The
feedback is given in a very gentle and motivated way to help another person in a positive way. I am
thrilled and I feel confident enough to use the DESC-model to give feedback in my further life.

Project group
I thought the meeting was crucial and necessary in many aspects since it gave us the chance to learn
more about each other's personality traits and how each person deals with himself. It helped us
understand how these characteristics and allergies distinguish us from one another and make our
group unique. We communicated with one another in an open and nonjudgmental manner. In my
opinion, it would be ideal if everyone in the group contributed equally, but aside from that, I thought
the meeting went smoothly.

Future
‘The future depends on what you do today’ (Gelauff). A quote that you can personalize.
By acting on your possibilities and making the most of your circumstances, you have the power to
decide for yourself where you want to go in life and who you want to become.
