RESPONDENT’S VIEW ON ORAL COMMUNICATION SKILLS

This paper reports on the interview of five (5) people about how to improve oral communication
skills in English. Respondent no. 1 is a male aged 27 years old and working in Private Sector
Company. Mr. Khairuddin stated that he practicing speaking in English every day and makes a
friend with his international colleague. He frequently having a discussion or meeting with client
using English as intermediate language. By doing that, he would able to speak English fluently
and comfortably. He also stated that Malaysians can improve their speaking or oral skills by
doing the same technique as he is. He also make sure that if there are any word that he does not
understand, he will ask his friend immediately or check it on dictionary.

Respondent no. 2 is a female aged 42 years old and working as English teacher in government
school. Ms. Idayu said that Malaysians people especially student can improve their oral
communication in English is by asking your guide or the expertise in English. The
communication errors can be corrected immediately if you ask your teacher or people who hold
expertise in English. The doubt in both grammatical and sentence can be cleared and will help
you understanding and become more skilled in oral communication. Ms. Idayu quoted the
famous line “Practice Make Perfect”. By practicing it daily and be confident while speaking in
English. Speak as often as possible will make you confident using your pronunciations and
vocabulary. She also loves to engage in debates or discussion to boost up her oral
communication skills.

Respondent no. 3 is a male aged 15 years old and currently studying in high school. The subject
syllabuses in school nowadays are using English as intermediate language. This practice makes
student to speak and using English frequently in school. By that way, their oral communications
in English are developed and improving. Mr. Adib also stated that youth nowadays love to use
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more. This application mostly using English as their language
and indirectly helping the user using English more. Malaysians people also can use the social
media medium to interact with their different country friend. Mr. Adib said he likes to play
games such as scribble, crossword to enhance his skills. This games required deep thinking and a
frequent use of dictionary. He loves to learn a new word each time he plays these games.
Respondent no. 4 is a female aged 25 years old and working as stewardess in one of Malaysian
Airlines Company. Miss Collen said her job required her to speak in fluent English. This is 5
because in her job description, she has to help and converse with airline passenger from all over
the world. Miss Collen stated that Malaysian people can improve their oral skills by watching
and listening to an English movie or song. There are a lot of good English movie and song can be
inspired the Malaysians to improve the way their speaking in English. She personally loves
songs by Céline Dion. Miss Collen also likes to read an English novel to help her understand the
word meaning and become skilled in her English conversation.

The last respondent is a male aged 57 years old. Mr. Thanapalan is a government pensioner. He
said he true beginner when it comes to English. So, he starts with getting the basic done. He
using the simple talk and practice conversations such as “Hello, how are you?”, “How is the
weather?”. Then he started getting familiar with the grammar. He always tries to read the English
newspaper to enhance his oral skill by read it loudly. Other than that, he also labeled everything
in his house to set his mind to think in English. Mr. Thanapalan advised the Malaysians there are
no such as age difference when learning new things or new language. Learning a new language
is so much fun. We also can meet more friends and having a good conversation than before.
