Christmas Traditions around the

world By Aliki Karnavou 1st Grade
Finland
In Finland ,when Christmas morning comes Finish families eat some kind of porridge
made of rice and milk topped with cinnamon, milk, or butter. But there is one special
thing that they do. They hide one almond and whoever finds it wins. However most of
the families hide more so the children won’t be upset.

Austria
It might sound weird but if you live in Austria it is something normal. They have a devil
creature called Krampus that joins St.Nicholas. Then, they ask the children to make a list
of the good and the bad things they have done this year .The good kids get sweets, apples
and nuts while the ‘‘bad’’ kids worry what Krampus might bring on Christmas morning.

Switzerland
Swiss families make heir own advent calendars for Christmas. These calendars are either
made by the kids as a fun activity or for the kids as a surprise. Each day’s gift is treats or oth-
er surprises like toys. When the Christmas eve comes kids get the biggest and the best pre-
sent out of all the other ones. That is why it is their favorite day they are always waiting with
impatience for that day to come.

Blackout challenge by Valeria Morfoniou 3rd Grade

Teenagers and children are addicted to tik tok in addition to the endless hours they spend on this app
they have started committing suicides doing a blackout challenge.
The blackout challenge is a test in which children from all over the world cause suffocation to them-
selves until they temporarily lose consciousness and then rise the moment they regain it, The chal-
lenge essentially invites children to upload the video to Tik Tok from the moment they lose conscious-
ness until they recover. Some children use shoelaces, ropes or sheets to suffocate themselves. It all
started last December by Nylah who was found hanging from a bag strap, having previously watched
videos on Tik Tok, which showed teenagers fainting in the challenge. This infamous game has started
to take place in Greece as well, starting with a 12-year-old child who was found by his parents hanged
in his room. The circumstances of the death were similar to those of a 7-year-old girl. Another similar
incident is the suicide of a 13-year-old boy who died in the same way from suffocation.
It has become so well known that everyone discusses it and many children start to get into this process
or at least think about it. Children and teenagers are the future of this society that we have all created,
it is a pity that they let so many lives get lost over a stupid game.

HELP THE STRAY DOGS AND CATS IN WINTER BY IRENE KARABOURNI

We are going through days with bitter cold, rain and snow, phenomena that en-
danger the lives of stray dogs and cats in our country. Here are some very helpful
tips to help them during the winter months with few and cheap materials.
Microchip check: First check with a veterinarian if it has a microchip (not
charged).
Knock on the hood of your car: Knock on the hood of your car before you start
its engine. Many cats seek refuge in the heat of the engine, so they are in danger
when the car is started.
Housing: No one can force you to house a stray in your home until it is adopted,
however for the animal it would be the best temporary solution. If an animal is a
stray, this does not make it stronger in the cold and rain. On the contrary, it puts it
at greater risk. You may be able to put it in your yard for a while. If not, find some
pallets or a wooden box and create a safe area for the animal. Make a house and
put in it an old blanket or clothes that you no longer need. If you decide to put
clothes/blankets inside the makeshift house, in case of rain you should be able to
pick up the wet and put them in a dry place, otherwise they will have the opposite
effect if they get wet, as the animal will get cold. So if you can not visit it so often,
it is better not to put clothes/blankets inside.
Food and water: The most important thing for a stray animal is food and water.
Offer extra food to your neighborhood’s stray dogs and cats. Food is an energy
that helps regulate heat. An animal that has enough food and water is more re-
sistant to cold and disease. It is ideal to put daily clean food and water. Note that a
medium quality dry food does not cost more than 20-25€ per 20 kg. Even the lefto-
vers from your own food are better than nothing. If you can provide a stray with
these basics, you protect it from the risk of being hit by cars or poisoned, as it will
not need to look for food.
Taking care of a stray dog or cat is not an easy task and requires dedication, but
even ten minutes of your time can be enough to save a life, if not more. Unfortu-
nately, no one can save all the strays alone, but YOU can be the salvation for one
or a few of them during these difficult cold winter days!
