NRC 16708 | Hiver 2023

Mode d'enseignement : À distance

Temps consacré : 3-0-6 Crédit(s) : 3

Given the complexity of the contexts of management today, to be effective managers must not only learn to manage projects and people
well, but also to manage themselves. This course aims to equip students to mobilize individuals and teams, optimize approaches,
maximize results and innovate in an environment of perpetual change. The course adapts transformative processes of learning that
integrate experimentation, reflection and co-development of the various management skills introduced in the course. Students who
have successfully completed MNG-2107 cannot register for this course.

This course is the French version of MNG-6086 Habiletés personnelles de gestion . Only one of the two courses will be recognized in your
program. Students who have previously taken a strategy course equivalent to MNG-2107 développement d'habiletés de gestionnaire
cannot register in this course. This course is offered online. For more information, visit the course page at www.distance.ulaval.ca.

Course Description

Introduction
Developing Management Skills MNG-6133 is a theory-based, though highly practical course on developing management and leadership
skills individually, interpersonally and collectively within teams and the broader organizational culture as a whole. Informed by current
social science and business research, this course is designed to enable students to manage their own life and relationships with others,
to develop themselves as leaders within their organizations and to discover first-hand their passion for personal and professional
development. Management and leadership development concepts used in the course will be immediately applicable for students, but
also set the stage for life-long professional development. This course will focus primarily on your personal quest to thrive, by examining
your own leadership strengths (and limitations), and professional experiences that enhance your capacity to lead and manage
authentically.

Research has shown that certain essential skills are associated with managerial effectiveness. This course aims to help students
understand what those skills are and to assess and develop approaches to master them. More specifically, this course was developed
around the following leadership goals.

Understand core personal management skills as well as their respective strengths and weaknesses.
Understand the processes of personal development in professional contexts and to develop an enriched understanding of the
significant challenges associated.
Understand the conditions most likely to support this development, through the investigation of one's experience, experimentation
and peer support.
Learn to assess the quality and impact of different management interventions.
Learn to foster collaborative investigations and improve skills that have been holding us back.
Make a comprehensive analysis of a problematic work situation in terms of key management skills.

MNG-6133 is designed for students in Laval MBA programs. It is required in several concentrations including the new MBA Program in
Global Business.

Remarks concerning the course workload: This course generally requires on average 9 hours per week.

Participating actively in course reading & lecture discussions online, as well as student presentations
is a key part of the course.

Instructor Posted Threads

For the instructor posted discussions / reflection threads that I post each week, I ask that you make
at least one quality post  for your minimum contribution. These more in-depth posts make up a key
part of your course participation grade. Each post should be between 250-500 words. The posting
should relate to the main topic and provide something new to the conversation. It should connect to
the ideas in the reading and build upon other student's thoughts where possible. I ask that postings
help enhance critical thinking about the readings and the topic of discussion.

Team book Posted Threads

For the student posted threads (i.e. team book presentations), I ask that you make one posting a
week for your participation (word count up to you).

Inspiration Threads

I will also post inspiration threads to contribute to as well (word count also up to you). These are
optional, only if you feel inspired to post.

Overall, it is important that your weekly participation in the above areas contribute to the learning
and personal/professional development of yourself and other class members.

During the first week, after being assigned your team for the semester, each team member is required
to order their team book at Amazon.ca. I expect every member of your team will all have read the
book and present the topics you choose from different perspectives in relation to the theories,
approaches and frameworks we will be discussing during the session and course as a whole. Get
together with your team online to formulate your strategy for a successful presentation.

Your Team Presentation

With your team, you will make a 45-minute online presentation on Zoom in which a book will be
presented and summarized. The objective is to inform the class of a book on a topic of management
skills and to relate this to the theme of the week the book is presented in.

Your team will introduce the book and present the key perspectives, findings, and arguments. Focus
on the content your team believes is the most significant and useful.

Your team will close your presentation with a 5 to 10 minute question and answer session (within the
45-minute total) to be taken up with the Audience team who is assigned to participate with your

Overview

Your final project presentation provides you and your team with an opportunity to go more into

the skills involved in research, critical thinking, collaborative presenting and public presentation.
Further description of the presentation will be given after the reading week.

45-minute Final Team Project Presentation
Your overall task as a team is to prepare and conduct a 30-minute final team project presentation on
a particular issue, topic or theme related to developing management skills that your group is
interested in learning about more in depth. Your basic objective is to support your classmates in
arriving at a new, in depth & applied understanding of your topic .

Your presentation should also include a 10-minute corporate training component, where your team
trains the class about how to apply the ideas and theories you introduce. To do this effectively, I ask
that your team prepare a training as a team of consultants would. In other words, your team will
need to facilitate a key applied section of your presentation in a way that a group of paid consultants
would deliver a corporate in-house training. The training component will be applied with the team
who is scheduled to attend your final project presentation online via Zoom.

Students with disabilities, learning difficulties or mental health problems

In order to benefit from accommodation measures for a class or an exam, it is necessary to make an appointment with a counsellor
specializing in the welcoming and support of students with disabilities (Accueil et soutien aux étudiants en situation de handicap
(ACSESH)) at the Student Assistance Centre (Centre d'aide aux étudiants). To do this, students with a permanent functional limitation
should visit the website monPortail.ulaval.ca/accommodement   and make an appointment as soon as possible.

Activation of the accommodation measures should be completed via the website monPortail.ulaval.ca/accommodement   within a
week of authorization, so as to ensure that they are in place. Students who have already arranged for accommodation measures must
also activate them for their classes and/or exams via the website monPortail.ulaval.ca/accommodement   so that they can be put into
place. Please note that activation of accommodation measures must be done within the first two weeks of classes.

For all questions pertaining to accommodation measures for classes at FSA ULaval, you can contact the FSA ULaval Exam Center (Centre
des examens FSA ULaval) at Examens.

Deadlines and Overdue Work

Extensions will only be granted on medical or compassionate grounds and will not be granted because of work
or other commitments. Requests for extensions should be made in writing to the lecturer-in-charge prior to
the due date. Medical certificates or other evidence must be attached and must contain information which
justifies the extension sought.

Late assignments which have not been granted an extension will, at the lecturer's discretion, be penalised by deducting ten per cent of
total marks for each full day overdue.

Assignments submitted more than six days late will normally not be accepted.

This eTextbook is simple to use on computers or iOS and Android mobile devices (even offline). You can take notes and
highlights within the eText; they are added to your virtual notebook, where you can organize them for the way you study.

Get started by going to: https://console.pearson.com/enrollment/6gfeoj

You can also access an etext at the following address, although my preference is for the first one, as it comes directly from
the publisher:
