How is fake news spread and reinforced globally?

Answer: In today’s time, the escalation of fake news and disinformation is very prevalent,
and it negatively affects the society we live in. As we are living in a time of extraordinary
technological transformation and globalization, communication between people became
easier; hence, the spread of fake news became easier too and started to be reinforced
globally. There are several contributing factors to why fake news spreads so fast, like a
contagious virus. But as for me, there are two primary reasons why it spread quickly and
was reinforced globally: the rise of technology and digital media, as well as the lack of
media and information literacy.

Since the rise of social and digital media, any information people want to share could be
transmitted with one click of a button. However, it is evident that these media don't have
strict regulations, which is why fake news and disinformation could be spread easily. For
instance, in the recent Philippine election, applications such as TikTok, YouTube, and
Facebook became major channels of fake news, and instead of fact-checking and
removing posts with wrong information, the algorithms and controllers of these
applications amplified more fake news. If these applications continue to be not strictly
regulated, then they will eventually become a nest of "trolls" that spread fake news, and
more people will be victims of fake news since these media are the ones that are most
accessible and convenient at present.
