2 Check VNT
Check, in the following sequence:
• That the vacuum hoses between the
turbocharger and vacuum pump are intact.
• That the vacuum regulator located under the
fuel distribution pipe functions.
Switch to another vacuum regulator to check
that the original is not faulty.
• That the turbocharger control arm reaches
its end position.
Remove the hose from the turbocharger
vacuum box (1) and connect
885531 Pressure testing kit instead. Create
a vacuum of 64 ± 3 kPa. At this point the
control arm (2) on the turbocharger (VNT)
P0010687 must reach its end position.
If the control arm does not reach its end
position and the vacuum hoses and vacuum
regulator prove to be intact, change the
turbocharger.
IMPORTANT!
The control arm adjustment nut is calibrated with
the turbocharger and may not be removed. If its
position is changed, a fault code will be
generated. The engine warranty is no longer valid
if the adjuster nut is undone.
Turbocharger, cleaning
Function description:
The turbocharger is equipped with VNT technology.
The positions of the vanes in the turbine housing are
varied by means of vacuum generated by a vacuum
pump. The vacuum capsule rod is joined to a movable
ring via a lever.

2 Lever
3 Vacuum capsule
4 Vacuum circuit
5 Vacuum regulator
6 Guide rail
7 Vacuum circuit, vacuum pump
8 Vacuum capsule rod
Tools:
3849613 Pressure testing kit
Test 1:
1 Run the engine at idle. The lever is affected by
the vacuum capsule rod. The lever position
depends on the vacuum provided by the vacuum
circuit.
2 Watch the lever return motions and check the
time it takes for the lever to reach its initial position
(the position it has when not affected by vacuum)
when the engine is shut down. The return should
be approx. 1-1.5 seconds.
If the return time is longer it could be long enough
for the engine control unit to diagnose a fault.
Test 2:
1 Make sure the engine is not running.
P0018727 2 Connect the standard Volvo Penta vacuum pump
(3849613 Pressure testing kit) to the vacuum
capsule located at the turbocharger.
3 Pump unit the lever has moved to its end position.
4 Release the vacuum and watch the lever return
motion and check the time it takes for the lever to
reach its initial position (the position it has when
not affected by vacuum). The return time should
be approx. 1-1.5 seconds. Of the return time is
longer it could be long enough for the engine
control unit to diagnosis a fault.

housing.
