A joystick command unit and the associated connection interface (Base Station BS) is installed on every con-
trol stand.
In addition, remote ON/OFF is read-in and the compass is connected to the Base Station (KJ/KJC) in the
main control stand (optional).
The GPS module and the GPS antenna are also connected at the main control stand.
The thruster boxes for side power with S-Link (TH_SL) and ABT-TRAC (TH_ABT) are CAN-based thruster inter-
faces. The housings differ from those of the standard thruster boxes TH_B/ TH_S.
Only one TH_SL thruster box is required for both bow and stern thruster together.

Maneuvering mode
Thruster mode
• Thruster mode:
Only the thrusters are operated and controlled when the joystick is in Thruster mode. Clutch engage-
ment/disengagement and speed are not controlled.
Thruster mode can also be activated without relinquishing command at the propulsion control lever. This
makes it possible to control clutch engagement/disengagement and speed using the propulsion control
lever and to control the thrusters with the joystick.
• Standby:
The joystick is in Standby mode when thruster operation is deactivated.
Note:
Depending on the make of thruster, the input signals from the manufacturer's control unit have priority over
the control signals from the joystick (regardless of the operating mode).
The position at the time of selection is maintained in GPS Hold mode. The system automatically compen-
sates for external influences e.g. wind drift, currents etc.
Joystick
For maneuver setting:
• Ahead
• Astern
• Turning
• etc.

WARNING
The ship is still considered as being underway when holding position. Propellers may engage suddenly.
The ship may move unpredictably.
Danger to life of personnel on-board and in the vicinity!
• Maintain visible contact with the area surrounding the ship.
• Ensure that all persons are clear of the danger zone around the ship.
• Inform all personnel on-board the ship that position holding mode has been activated, and instruct
them to tread safely and keep a firm hold at all times.
Position can be changed in GPS Hold mode using the commanding joystick. The new position/heading is
maintained as soon as the joystick is returned to the neutral position.
Emergency shutdown
u Press E key.
Result: • All keys glow red.
• The joystick relinquishes command if it was previously in command.
• The system goes into initial selection mode in which any propulsion control lever may assume command.
• The propulsion plant is disengaged and the engine runs at idling speed.
• An visual/audible RCS alarm etc. is output at the propulsion control lever/joystick.
• The thruster control is deactivated.
Ahead
TIM-ID: 0000059705 - 001
If the propulsion control lever is pushed forwards, the vessel moves ahead at a speed proportional to the
degree of control lever inclination.
Astern
During the second part of the control lever travel, the joystick system keeps the gearbox engaged and con-
trols the engine speed to increase the propulsion and therefore the vessel speed.
The joystick system influences the control system in such a way that events that can lead to engine or pro-
pulsion system damage are excluded, e.g. Ahead engaged too quickly or changing from Ahead to Astern too
quickly.
To maintain the selected direction, the joystick system automatically compensates for any bow rotations
when moving in Astern direction. With this maneuver, however, it is very difficult to maintain the direction
once the vessel has adopted a certain motion. Any inexactitudes can be compensated manually by executing
a combined turning maneuver.
Moving the joystick to one side propels the vessel accordingly in a proportional lateral motion.
To maintain the selected direction and to make control easier, the joystick system automatically compen-
sates for any bow rotations in the event of sideways motion. In certain cases, e.g. windy conditions, it is
possible that the vessel may go off course when maneuvering. Manual compensation involving a combined
turning maneuver is possible in this instance.
The thruster must be used intensively to move the vessel sideways. Electrical thrusters may overheat when
used for longer periods whereupon overheating protection is tripped thus blocking them. We therefore rec-
ommend using this feature sparingly.
TIM-ID: 0000059705 - 001
Complex maneuvers can be executed by combining various movements (ahead, astern, lateral motion and
rotation).
When the joystick is moved diagonally the vessel executes a diagonal motion.
To maintain the selected direction and to make control easier, the joystick system automatically compen-
sates for any bow rotations in the event of diagonal motion. In certain cases, e.g. very windy conditions, it is
possible that the vessel may go off course. Manual compensation involving a combined turning maneuver is
possible in this instance.
The thruster must be used intensively to move the vessel diagonally. Electrical thrusters may overheat when
used for longer periods whereupon overheating protection is tripped thus blocking them. We therefore rec-
ommend using this feature sparingly.
We recommend initiating diagonal motion when the vessel is stationary or moving slowly to minimize dynam-
ic effects on the hull and facilitate diagonal motion.
TIM-ID: 0000059705 - 001
Turning the knob of the joystick propels the vessel around its center of gravity at a speed proportional to
joystick rotation.
TIM-ID: 0000059705 - 001
To perform a turning maneuver, move the joystick forward and, at the same time, turn its head in the desired
direction.
Moving the joystick upward to the right causes the bow thruster to move the bow toward starboard.
Moving the joystick downward to the right causes the stern thruster to move the stern toward starboard.
TIM-ID: 0000059705 - 001
Moving the joystick downward to the left causes the stern thruster to move the stern toward port.

Alarm handling
When an alarm is signaled, the skipper must determine the reason why the alarm was raised and respond
accordingly on the basis of available information.
Acknowledging alarms
Joystick system alarm signals are acknowledged at the command unit (joystick/propulsion control lever)
TIM-ID: 0000060904 - 002
(→ Page 44).
Joystick system was deactivated with emergency off button (on joystick). Thrusters can now only be
controlled at the manufacturer's panel. Initial command transferred to the propulsion control levers.
Cause Corrective action
u Check cabling of joystick system if the emergency off button was
not pressed.
