Important Safety Notices

Selecting NEUTRAL disengages transmission clutches but does not

prevent propeller shaft rotation. If you require positive neutral (propeller
shaft locked), the internal shaft brake must be used.

To prevent accidental starting of the engine when performing routine

transmission maintenance, disconnect the battery cables from the
battery and remove ignition key from the switch.

Lifting Bolt Holes

Most Twin Disc products have provisions for attaching lifting bolts. The holes
provided are always of adequate size and number to safely lift the Twin Disc
product.

These lifting points must not be used to lift the complete power unit.
Lifting excessive loads at these points could cause failure at the lift
point (or points) and result in death or serious injury.

Select lifting eyebolts to obtain maximum thread engagement with bolt

shoulder tight against housing. Bolts should be near but should not
contact bottom of bolt hole. Bolt failure at the lift point (or points) could
result in death or serious injury.

Joysticks

A control station is a location from which the boat can be operated. On a

vessel with EJS the control station may consist of any of the following:

† An EJS joystick that is used to control the bow thruster, the conventional
drive trains, and if installed, the stern thruster, when the EJS is in
Joystick mode.

† One or two legacy (RS-485) thruster control panels or one stainless

(J1939) control panel to control the bow thruster and, if installed, the
optional stern thruster independent of the conventional drive trains
when the Express Joystick System controller is in Standby mode.

† Analog and/or digital EC300 control heads to control the conventional

drive trains independent of the thruster(s) when the Express Joystick
System controller is in Standby mode.

The joysticks provide the following information to the EC300JS Control:

† Selection of the active control station

† Direction and throttle command

Multiple control stations allow the boat’s drive system to be controlled from
more than one location on the boat. Only one EC300 control station or
EC300JS joystick station is active at a time. A thruster control panel station
can be active only when all EJS joystick stations are inactive. The operator
selects the joystick as the active control system by pressing its Station Select
button. When in Joystick mode, the operator controls the vessel movement
using the joystick. When an EC300 control head or any thruster control panel
is selected as the active control station, the joystick is deselected and inactive.

EC300JS Control

The EC300JS Control is the interface between the operator and the
conventional drive system and thrusters. It must be configured properly to
match the installed components. Instructions for performing configuration
are provided in Chapter 4 of this manual.

The EC300JS Control accepts input from the EJS joystick and then commands
the thrusters directly via its pulse width modulation (PWM) outputs and the
conventional drive trains via their associated EC300 Controls.

Archive Files

Archive files are copies of a control system’s configuration files. Archive files
provide a backup of an existing configured EC300 Control System and should
be stored in a safe place for use in restoring the configuration in the event
that an installed EC300 Control fails and must be replaced. The archive file
for that system can then be verified and written directly to the replacement
EC300 Control. Ensure that you save each system’s configuration file with
a name that easily identifies the boat for modification, reference, or as a
template for another boat’s system.

Software Version Control

Within C:\Twin Disc\MFST\Bin folder are .SRE files which are the current
controller software Files. These files are updated when the MFST is updated
as described in “Checking for Software Updates” on page 36. The SRE
file is named as #######_APP_N_XX.SRE. This is the current software file
for the EC300 where: N is the major software revision and XX is the minor
revision.

When the MFST is updated, this file will reflect the updated software version
as shown in the following example:

The currently installed SRE file is #######_APP_1_03.SRE and then

changes to #######_APP_1_04.SRE because the currently installed
software was updated from revision 1_03 to revision 1_04.

When you connect to a controller, the MFST compares this file to the file
contained on the controller to determine whether the controller has the most
recent software. When it does not, the MFST indicates that it is not current
and asks if you would like to update the software.

Configuration

After installation in the boat, the EC300JS Control must be configured in

order to match the operating parameters of the installed hardware, desired
operational configurations, and optional equipment. This chapter provides
information for setting the configurable parameters of the:

† Joystick

† Thrusters

Configuration is performed by a technician using the Marine Field Support

Tool (MFST). The figures included in this chapter are screen shots from
installation of a system with the required bow thruster and two conventional
drive trains.

If the EC300JS control is ever replaced, its configuration must be

downloaded to the replacement.

Gathering Configuration Data

Twin Disc produces a complete installation package from the information

collected on the Marine Set Up Sheet for the boat. The following documentation
for the system to be configured should be available prior to launching the
MFST:

† Completed configuration forms provided in Appendix A

† System drawing set consisting of one or more pages, depending on

system size

† Installation drawings

Appendix A provides a form that can be filled out with the system’s information
from the above mentioned sources. The form follows the MFST configuration
screens and helps ensure that all relevant parameters are identified prior to
starting the configuration process on-site.

the same directory.

4. If the selected application directory already contains an EJS™ file,

navigate to the appropriate Apps directory and click OK. The following
message window opens.

This message is advisory only and is displayed because the MFST does
not expect to find an existing configuration file for a new installation. If
the EJS file in the selected application folder matches the serial number
of the controller you are setting up, then the file will be overwritten with
the new configuration uploaded to the controller. If the controller’s serial
number does not match any EJS files in the selected folder, then a new
EJS file will be created, and there will be multiple EJS files in that folder.

Joystick Sensitivity Joystick Sensitivity maps are used to translate
the Physical Position to the Adjusted Position of
the Joystick axis, for each of the axes X, Y and Z.
Adjusted Position is then used to determine thruster
and transmission propeller outputs.
Express Positioning
Enable Express Express Positioning is an add-on feature to the
Positioning Express Joystick System that allows a vessel to
automatically maintain position and heading with-
out operator input. A Twin Disc supplied GPS and
display are required.
Gains button The Express Positioning Gains button provides
access to settings that control the operation of the
Express Positioning feature. NOTE: Access to this
item may not be available due to password-protect-
ed access limitations.

Legacy and Stainless Steel (J1939 and RS-485) Thruster Control Station

Legacy (RS-485) thruster

A manual thruster control station is defined as either one panel that can
only command the bow thruster, or a pair of panels installed at the same
location where one panel commands the bow thruster and the second panel
commands the stern thruster. All of a boat’s manual thruster control stations
are configured identically, for example it is not possible to configure some
stations as bow-only and some stations as bow and stern.

† Bow thruster-only systems can only be configured for bow-only stations

(one panel per station).

† Bow and stern thruster systems can be configured either for bow-only
stations (one panel per station) or bow and stern stations (two panels
per station).

Configuring a bow and stern thruster system for bow-only manual thruster
stations prevents the operation of the stern thruster while the EC300JS is in
Standby Mode, but has no effect on the ability of the EC300JS to command
the stern thruster while a joystick station is active.

Configure the manual control stations and panels as follows:

1. Set the number of panels per station to 1 if only the bow thruster is to
be commanded from the manual panels. Set the number of panels
per station to 2 to configure the system for manual operation of bow
and stern thrusters.

2. Set the number of manual thruster control stations to the number of

unique locations where panels are installed.

The total number of panels installed should equal the number of thruster
control stations times the number of panels per station.

EC300JS Express Joystick System® Configuration and Troubleshooting Manual #1026423 65

Configuration ©2018 Twin Disc, Incorporated

When manual thruster control panels are first enabled for a system, the
following message is displayed warning of the reconfiguration of alarms.

Click Yes to enable the panels and allow reconfiguration of the alarms. Clicking
No will reset the number of manual thruster stations to 0 (disabling panels)
and will not reconfigure alarms.

Stainless Steel (J1939) Thruster

A digital thruster control station is defined as one panel that can only command
the bow thruster, a pair of panels installed at the same location where one
panel commands the bow thruster and the second panel commands the stern
thruster, or one panel containing 2 levers where the top lever commands
the bow thruster and the bottom lever commands the stern thruster. All of a
boat’s digital thruster control stations are configured identically, for example
it is not possible to configure some stations as bow-only and some stations
as bow and stern.

•Bow thruster-only systems can only be configured for bow-only stations

(one panel per station).

•Bow and stern thruster systems can be configured either for bow-only
stations (one panel per station) or bow and stern stations (two panels per
station or one panel with 2 levers).

Configuring a bow and stern thruster system for bow-only digital thruster
stations prevent the operation of the stern thruster while the EC300JS is in
Standby Mode, but has no effect on the ability of the EC300JS to command
the stern thruster while a joystick station is active.

Configure the digital control stations and panels as follows:

1. Check the boxes in the “Station Configuration” window if there are
J1939 thruster panels at a specific station. Whether it be a panel with
one or two levers.

©2018 Twin Disc, Incorporated Tuning the System

Tuning the System

The reason for using the EJS™ is to precisely position the vessel, such as
driving it laterally to dock it. When the joystick is moved to port or starboard,
the system moves the vessel as directed, without undue movements in other
directions. Of course, wind and currents will also affect movement.

The system must be tuned to help it “learn” how the thrust of each drive
element affects motion. During the tuning process you are directed to move
the vessel laterally starboard and port, to tune the joystick at the 30% and
100% starboard and port positions.

This chapter provide the following procedures:

† “Maneuvering During Tuning” on page 82.

† “Entering Tuning” on page 84.

† “Tuning a Bow Thruster-Only System” on page 87.

2. Turn the system on and position the vessel so that you have a
stationary point of reference to gauge the tuning process against and
to provide adequate space for maneuvering.

Make sure the rutters are centered, and the boat is facing
against the wind or high current. The boat must stay still
for a minimum of 5 seconds when facing against the wind
or in high current. If not, reposition boat and repeat test.

3. Launch the MFST.

4. Log in.

5. Take control of the joystick station where tuning is to be performed.

when the joystick configuration is changed in the MFST.

1. Place the system in Standby Mode (no EJS™ joystick station is active).

2. Center the joystick to be calibrated.

3. While the joystick is centered press and hold the Station Select button
until the LEDs flash rapidly (about 20 seconds). Ignore any initial
flashing during the first few seconds that indicates a station activation
may be attempted.

When the joystick is not within the allowed center

point range a flash code is displayed indicating the
fault.

4. Release the Station Select button. This stores the current joystick
position as the new center point.

5. Move the joystick to the following positions and hold in position briefly.
The order is not important but the joystick must be moved to each
position.

Troubleshooting

Overview

The EC300JS Control monitors system functions and maintains fault logs.
When a fault occurs the fault is displayed as blinking LEDs at each Express
Joystick System joystick (as flash codes) and recorded with the information
shown in the following table.

Table 1. Fault Log Information

Information Information Definition
Name
Fault Name This field identifies the status monitor point that gener-
ated the fault.
Fault Info This field provides additional information regarding the
nature of the fault.
Time Stamp This field contains the date and the time at which the
fault was logged.
Snapshot Provides detailed information on the state of the hard-
ware and software at the time the fault is detected.

The fact that a fault has occurred is indicated by the following:

† Joystick LED: Flashes the active fault code when a fault is registered
at all joystick stations.

† If configured, Alarm 1 or Alarm 2 relay output: The following contacts

close when the alarm for the fault is enabled in the configuration:

• Alarm 1 relay: J8-7 and J8-8

• If EPS is enabled with the color display installed with the audible
device, an Audible alarm will sound through the audible device
of the display.
• Alarm 2 relay: J5-9 and J5-10
• If the Stainless Thruster Panels are install and alarms enabled,
an Audible alarm will sound through the thruster panel for High
temperature and Low oil level.
Because the EC300JS Control logs fault information, the fault log should be
the first place you check when the system fails or a fault is indicated. The
following figure provides an overview of the troubleshooting process. The
process is structured around using a laptop computer running the MFST to
view the faults logged by the EC300JS Control.

Communication Test

This procedure verifies that the installed EC300JS Control can communicate
using the RS232 and RS485 ports. If the EC300JS Control can power up
successfully, perform this procedure to ensure that these communication
ports are functional.

1. Connect the RS232 communications harness between the EC300JS

Control and the laptop.
2. Start the MFST software and type your password.
3. Click OK or press the Enter key.
4. Select the Express Joystick System and click OK.
5. Select the appropriate COM port or the RS232 connection between
the laptop and the EC300JS Control.
6. Turn on the EC300JS Control. The MFST shows Status: RS232,
Direct Connect to 1 EC300JS Control at the bottom of the screen.
7. Click the Field Configuration button, then the Field Modify button in the
MFST. The MFST should begin reading the configuration information
from the EC300JS Control.
8. When the MFST has finished reading the configuration from the
EC300JS Control, exit the MFST and turn the EC300JS Control off.
This verifies that the EC300JS Control can communicate with the
MFST via RS232.
9. Remove the RS232 harness and connect the RS485 harness.
10. Start the MFST and type your password.
11. Click OK or press the Enter key.
12. Select the Express Joystick System and click OK.
13. Select the appropriate COM port for the RS485 connections between
the laptop and the EC300JS.
14. Turn on the EC300JS Control. The MFST shows Status: RS485, 1
Controller Found at the bottom of the screen.
15. Click the Field Configuration button, then the Field Modify button in
the MFST. The MFST begins reading the configuration information
from the EC300JS Control.
16. When the MFST has finished reading the configuration, exit the MFST
and turn the EC300JS Control off. This verifies that the EC300JS
Control can communicate with the MFST via RS485.

Entering Diagnostics Mode

The MFST software can also be used to perform diagnostic tests. Diagnostics
Mode tests verify operation of the EC300JS Control, the integrity and function
of the external circuits, and provide a means to energize and troubleshoot
the thrusters. Errors are shown on the MFST screen.

Diagnostics screens within tolerance are shown

with green indicators.

Enter diagnostics mode as follows:

1. Launch the MFST and connect to the EC300JS Control.

2. From the Field Configuration Menu click Diagnostics. The

Diagnostics window opens as shown in the example below.

The General window provides hardware and software information for

the control.

3. Click NVM Fault Log. A summary of the logged faults are displayed
as shown in the following example.

EC300JS Express Joystick System® Configuration and Troubleshooting Manual #1026423 117
Troubleshooting ©2018 Twin Disc, Incorporated

Figure 8. NVM Fault Log Diagnostics Window

4. The EC300JS maintains a log of the last 52 faults detected, it is

appended to the log. If 52 fault log entries already exist, the oldest
entry is overwritten with the new fault information

All faults are considered to be part of the long fault log and cannot be
cleared from the long fault log unless overwritten by a new fault as
described above. Newly detected faults are also present in the short
log until cleared by the user through the MFST. The following points
provide information for using the fault log:

• Snapshot data for a fault can be displayed by highlighting the

fault in the summary and clicking the Detail button. Return to
the fault summary by clicking the Summary button.
• Click the View Short Logs button to view only the faults that
have been logged since the short log was last cleared. Return
to the full list by clicking the View Long Logs button.
