Joysticks
An EJS joystick that is used to control the bow thruster, the conventional
drive trains, and if installed, the stern thruster, when the EJS is in
Joystick mode.
Multiple control stations allow the boat’s drive system to be controlled from
more than one location on the boat. Only one EC300 control station or
EC300JS joystick station is active at a time. A thruster control panel station
can be active only when all EJS joystick stations are inactive. The operator
selects the joystick as the active control system by pressing its Station Select
button. When in Joystick mode, the operator controls the vessel movement
using the joystick. When an EC300 control head or any thruster control panel
is selected as the active control station, the joystick is deselected and inactive.
EC300JS Control
The EC300JS Control is the interface between the operator and the
conventional drive system and thrusters. It must be configured properly to
match the installed components. Instructions for performing configuration
are provided in Chapter 4 of this manual.
The EC300JS Control accepts input from the EJS joystick and then commands
the thrusters directly via its pulse width modulation (PWM) outputs and the
conventional drive trains via their associated EC300 Controls.
Control signals are derived from the joysticks as outlined in the following
table. Connectors J1, J2, and J3 support the following inputs:
Joystick position
The following table describes the RS232/ NMEA connector on the EC300JS
control. This connector is for service use only, when connecting a laptop
computer to the EC300JS Control for troubleshooting or configuration.
The following table lists the Alarm 2 signal from J5 of the EC300JS control.
The following table describes the hydraulic oil temperature signal routed to
J6 of the EC300JS control.
Table 5 provides a listing of the four PWM signals used to control the thrusters’
proportional hydraulic valves. PWM controls the duty cycle of the output
pulse train to control the magnitude of thrust from the bow or stern thrusters
as follows:
The following table outlines the ignition and alarm 1 signals at J8.
J9 is CAN 2.0 compliant and provides for connecting the EC300JS Control
to the EC300 controls that in turn interface with the conventional drive trains.
The EC300JS Control automatically detects connected devices using the
CAN interface. CAN bus interface signals are described in the following table.
J12 of the EC300JS Control provides the following hydraulic oil sensing
switch connections.
Power and ground connections for the EC300JS Control are provided by
connector J13, as listed in the following table.

connects the MFST to the control. The System Tune function and the
Offline Modify function cannot be used while a connection between the
MFST and the control exists. The following message will be displayed.
Archive Files
Archive files are copies of a control system’s configuration files. Archive files
provide a backup of an existing configured EC300 Control System and should
be stored in a safe place for use in restoring the configuration in the event
that an installed EC300 Control fails and must be replaced. The archive file
for that system can then be verified and written directly to the replacement
EC300 Control. Ensure that you save each system’s configuration file with
a name that easily identifies the boat for modification, reference, or as a
template for another boat’s system.
Within C:\Twin Disc\MFST\Bin folder are .SRE files which are the current
controller software Files. These files are updated when the MFST is updated
as described in “Checking for Software Updates” on page 36. The SRE
file is named as #######_APP_N_XX.SRE. This is the current software file
for the EC300 where: N is the major software revision and XX is the minor
revision.
When the MFST is updated, this file will reflect the updated software version
as shown in the following example:
When you connect to a controller, the MFST compares this file to the file
contained on the controller to determine whether the controller has the most
recent software. When it does not, the MFST indicates that it is not current
and asks if you would like to update the software.
2. Point the cursor at the field for which you need help.
3. Click the left mouse button to display help relating to the field.

Appendix A provides a form that can be filled out with the system’s information
from the above mentioned sources. The form follows the MFST configuration
screens and helps ensure that all relevant parameters are identified prior to
starting the configuration process on-site.
The Field Setup function configures a new installation. You can configure a
new installation in one of two ways:
3. Enter the name of the boat and go to step 6 or click Browse to store
the new configuration under an existing boat name. After clicking
Browse the following window opens.
This message is advisory only and is displayed because the MFST does
not expect to find an existing configuration file for a new installation. If
the EJS file in the selected application folder matches the serial number
of the controller you are setting up, then the file will be overwritten with
the new configuration uploaded to the controller. If the controller’s serial
number does not match any EJS files in the selected folder, then a new
EJS file will be created, and there will be multiple EJS files in that folder.

4. Select one of the following choices form File/Update when you have an
existing configuration file that you want to download to the controller:
• Configuration Only
• Tuning and Matrix Only
• All
The Off Line Modify function allows an existing configuration file to be viewed
or changed without being connected to an installed EC300JS Control. Off
Line Modify uses the archived files for an installed system, so the archived
files must be present on the computer you are using. Any changes made to
the configuration files can then be downloaded to the control system on the
boat the next time MFST is connected to a controller. To view or change the
configuration of an installed system perform the following procedure.
3. Click Off Line Modify. The Marine FST Off-Line Application Selection
window opens as shown below.
4. Select the boat installation to be modified from the Boat List. The File
List pane shows the associated configuration files that will be modified.
If there are any tuning script errors detected, MFST will automatically
replace the invalid tuning script with the default script based on the
thruster configuration. Click Close to proceed to the Offline Modify
window.
When the configuration file has been verified the MFST displays the
Offline Modify screen as shown in the following example:
Some parameters are read-only and are displayed as gray text. These
parameters cannot be altered.

This section provides information for configuring the thrusters. To access and
configure the Thruster configuration screen perform the following procedure:
1. At the configuration screen click the Thruster button on the tool bar or
from the panel menu. The Thrusters configuration window is opened
as shown in the following example.
For third party thrusters such as ABT and Side-Power, select “CAN-
Based Translator” from the Thrusters Type drop down menu.
Legacy and Stainless Steel (J1939 and RS-485) Thruster Control Station
A manual thruster control station is defined as either one panel that can
only command the bow thruster, or a pair of panels installed at the same
location where one panel commands the bow thruster and the second panel
commands the stern thruster. All of a boat’s manual thruster control stations
are configured identically, for example it is not possible to configure some
stations as bow-only and some stations as bow and stern.
Bow and stern thruster systems can be configured either for bow-only
stations (one panel per station) or bow and stern stations (two panels
per station).
Configuring a bow and stern thruster system for bow-only manual thruster
stations prevents the operation of the stern thruster while the EC300JS is in
Standby Mode, but has no effect on the ability of the EC300JS to command
the stern thruster while a joystick station is active.
1. Set the number of panels per station to 1 if only the bow thruster is to
be commanded from the manual panels. Set the number of panels
per station to 2 to configure the system for manual operation of bow
and stern thrusters.
The total number of panels installed should equal the number of thruster
control stations times the number of panels per station.
When manual thruster control panels are first enabled for a system, the
following message is displayed warning of the reconfiguration of alarms.
Click Yes to enable the panels and allow reconfiguration of the alarms. Clicking
No will reset the number of manual thruster stations to 0 (disabling panels)
and will not reconfigure alarms.
A digital thruster control station is defined as one panel that can only command
the bow thruster, a pair of panels installed at the same location where one
panel commands the bow thruster and the second panel commands the stern
thruster, or one panel containing 2 levers where the top lever commands
the bow thruster and the bottom lever commands the stern thruster. All of a
boat’s digital thruster control stations are configured identically, for example
it is not possible to configure some stations as bow-only and some stations
as bow and stern.
•Bow and stern thruster systems can be configured either for bow-only
stations (one panel per station) or bow and stern stations (two panels per
station or one panel with 2 levers).
Configuring a bow and stern thruster system for bow-only digital thruster
stations prevent the operation of the stern thruster while the EC300JS is in
Standby Mode, but has no effect on the ability of the EC300JS to command
the stern thruster while a joystick station is active.
Configuring Hydraulics
This procedure provides information for configuring the hydraulics using the
MFST. To access the hydraulics configuration screen, perform the following
procedure:
To view the stored tuning data, click the Tuning button on the tool bar or
from the panel menu. The Tuning configuration window is opened as shown
in the following example.
Tuning data may be cleared by clicking the Reset Tuning Data button. This
causes the following dialog box to be displayed.
Click OK to clear the tuning data saved in the controller. Click Cancel to close
the warning box without clearing the tuning data.
Configuring Alarms
To access and enable the desired alarms perform the following procedure:
1. At the configuration screen click the Alarms button on the tool bar or
from the panel menu. The Alarm configuration window is opened as
shown in the following example.
• J1939 Panel Alarm: Alarm 1 and 2 will be set for the Legacy
(RS-485) panel.
• Display Alarm: Alarm indication for future use.
When manual thruster control panels are installed, the Alarm 2 relay is
dedicated to the Oil Level Low fault and the Alarm 1 relay is dedicated to
the Oil Temperature High fault and are not configurable. This is indicated
by these selections being unavailable (gray) as shown in the example
above. These relays are also not available for other fault categories.
6. Power up all controllers in the system, the status will change and all
controllers must communicate with the MFST:
8. Click Field Modify. And then once in the Field modify select the Station
Head button on the configuration window select section. The following
window opens.
9. To enable the Express Joystick System, you must select the box
highlighted in the previous photo. Once this box is selected, the
configuration window select section will add an EJS button, between
the Alarms and Vessel info button, to the menu as shown below.
10. Select the EJS button and the following window will open.
11. Other parameters are included in the Idle Control tab and LU Entry
and Exit tab. The following windows will open when these tabs are
selected. Complete configuring the Express Joystick System as
required for the installed systems with “Table 16. Express Joystick
System” on page 77,”Table 17. Idle Control” on page 78, and
“Table 18. Lockup Phase Entry/Exit” on page 79.
Engine Parameters
Base Transmission The Base Transmission Input Idle Speed defines
Input Idle Speed the target input shaft speed (in RPM) when the
(RPM) EC300 controller commands 0 % throttle. This value
cannot command lower than Engine Base Idle.
Max Transmission The Max Transmission Input Speed is the engine
Input Idle Speed speed the engine controller maintains when it
(RPM) receives a command for 100% throttle when fully
loaded.
Joystick Mode Throttle Slew Rate
Slew Rate Limit The Joystick Mode Throttle Slew Rate Limit is the
(mSec For 0% to maximum rate at which the engine throttle can
100%) change while in Joystick Mode. This control sets
the minimum amount of time, in units of millisec-
onds, that the controller will allow the throttle signal
to transition from 0% to 100%.
NOTES
The reason for using the EJS™ is to precisely position the vessel, such as
driving it laterally to dock it. When the joystick is moved to port or starboard,
the system moves the vessel as directed, without undue movements in other
directions. Of course, wind and currents will also affect movement.
The system must be tuned to help it “learn” how the thrust of each drive
element affects motion. During the tuning process you are directed to move
the vessel laterally starboard and port, to tune the joystick at the 30% and
100% starboard and port positions.
If at any time during this procedure you find that you must reposition the
vessel for safe operation, press and release the joystick Station Select button
twice or take command of the system at an EC300 station.
2. Press and release the joystick station’s Station Select button. The
following message is displayed briefly before returning to the point at
which the tuning process was interrupted.
Entering Tuning
2. Turn the system on and position the vessel so that you have a
stationary point of reference to gauge the tuning process against and
to provide adequate space for maneuvering.
Make sure the rutters are centered, and the boat is facing
against the wind or high current. The boat must stay still
for a minimum of 5 seconds when facing against the wind
or in high current. If not, reposition boat and repeat test.
4. Log in.
• Clicking Yes starts the tuning process using tuning data stored
in the EC300JS.
• Clicking No starts the tuning process without using any stored
tuning data.
If there are any faults in the system before this step, the
tuning will end.
9. Press and hold the Station Select button until prompted. The screen
changes when communications between the MFST and the EC300JS
Control has been established as shown below.
10. Release the joystick Station Select button as directed. You are ready
to tune your system. Proceed to the appropriate section:
You are now ready to tune starboard 30% joystick position set point.
When set, this helps ensure that the boat moves straight starboard
when the joystick control is moved to starboard 30%.
As indicated, the vessel will move when the joystick is moved toward
the indicated direction. Ensure adequate clearance around the vessel
is available.
2. Move the joystick fully to starboard and note the initial movement of
the vessel (in the first few seconds). The following screen is displayed.
3. Rotate and move the joystick fore and aft as required to compensate
for the initial movement but do not try to compensate for the steady
state vessel motion.
4. While holding the joystick in the position estimated to correct the initial
motion, press and release the Station Select button.
6. When this point is tuned to your satisfaction, proceed to the next point
by pressing and releasing the Station Select button while the joystick
is centered. The following window is displayed.
You are now ready to tune port 30% joystick position set point. When
set, this helps ensure that the boat moves straight port when the

Valid voltages for the select switch are 2.0±0.3V for a released switch
and <0.7V for a pressed switch.
• If the select voltage remains constant regardless of whether the switch
is pressed or released, turn off the control and plug the harness from
the faulted joystick into a different station connector (J1, J2, or J3).
Note: The joystick station corresponding to the new joystick station
connector used must be enabled in the configuration. Replace the
EC300JS Control if the faulted select voltage is still indicated at the
original station.
• If the faulted select switch is now on the new station connector, inspect
the harness for damage, continuity, or corrosion. Repair or replace the
harness if any problems are found.
• Replace the joystick if no harness problems are found or if the
invalid select voltage only occurs while the switch is either pressed
or released.

555 Joystick 6 Disable 3. Place a jumper between pins 1 and 2 of the two position plug. The
Invalid disable switch voltage reported in Diagnostics should approach 8V. If not,
verify that approximately 8V is present at pin 1 of the two position plug
from the joystick station/harness with the EC300JS control powered and
the station harness connected to the joystick station.
• If 8V is not present verify that the red wire from pin I of the two position
plug is connected to pin 12 of the joystick connector. Replace the
joystick station if the wire is routed properly.
• If 8V is present at the two-position plug, but diagnostics does not report
8V with the jumper installed or 0V with no jumper, inspect the station
harness for damage, continuity, or corrosion. Repair or replace the
harness if any problems are found.
4. Check the resistance between pins 1 and 2 of the 2 position receptacle
coming from the switch. The resistance should be -1 kO with the switch
closed and -13.7 kO with the switch open. Verify the switch continuity and
inspect the wiring to the switch if the proper resistance is not measured.
Repair or replace the switch if any problems are found with the switch.

3. Disconnect the two position plug between the disable switch and
the joystick station/harness. The disable switch voltage reported in
Diagnostics should approach 0V.
4. Place a jumper between pins 1 and 2 of the two position plug. The
disable switch voltage reported in Diagnostics should approach 8V. If not,
verify that approximately 8V is present at pin 1 of the two position plug
from the joystick station/harness with the EC300JS control powered and
the station harness connected to the joystick station.
• If 8V is not present verify that the red wire from pin 1 of the two position
plug is connected to pin 12 of the joystick connector. Replace the
joystick station if the wire is routed properly.
• If 8V is present at the two-position plug, but diagnostics does not report
8V with the jumper installed, inspect the station harness and the wiring
from the station to the switch for damage, continuity, or corrosion.
Repair or replace the harness/wiring if any problems are found.
