WAYS OF LOCATING AN AREA

GOOGLE MAPS
Google maps, open street maps and yahoo maps are readily available on the
internet
Steps to find locations on google maps
Open google maps on your device
Find the blue dot on the map
Tap and Hold the blue dot to drop a pin
Swipe up on the dropped pin.
LANDMARKS
Landmarks are either natural or manmade, it helps us to remember the location of a
place.
Landmarks are points of reference in mental representation to find the location of a
place
Examples; schools , buildings, hills, rivers, lakes
USING LATTITUDES AND LONGITUDES
To find a location one inputs the exact co-ordinates on a location application or
program ie Google Maps, Yahoo maps
The co-ordinates are the Easting and Northing and are in numerical format.
STAGE DIRECTIONS
To find a location, one may be directed or given information by people who are
familiar with the area you are searching for.
This is done by pointing towards the direction, or by giving you landmarks, or by
giving you in the directions,
LOCATION BASED AUGMENTED REALITY
Location based AR primarily relies on GPS , accelerometer, digital compass and othe
technologies to find the location with high level accuracy
All modern devices are equipped with sensors and as such they can be found using
Augmented reality
MENTAL MAPS
Mental maps help us understand and interact with our surroundings.
You can use mental mapping to determine what you know about a particular
location,eg locating a shop in town by recalling the layout.
Mental maps are created and shaped over time as new information is learnt.
USING HEAVENLY BODIES
Celestial navigation also know as astronavigation is the practice of position fixing
using stars and other celestial bodies that enables a navigator to accurately
determine their actual, current, physical position in space.
USE OF DIRECTIONS BEARING AND DISTANCE
The bearing is the angle relative the true north in the clockwise direction of one point
to the other.
It is therefore mathematically possible to know the possible to know the position of a
place if both bearing and distance is known.
USING SPOT HEIGHTS
A spot height is an exact point in a map with an elevation recorded beside it that
represents, its height above a given datum.
This can also be used to determine the position of a place.
TRIGONOMETRIC STATIONS
They serve as physical reference points.
For topographical mapping catographers use laws of plane trigonometry which gives
us the length and angles of two sides of a triangle, which is enough information to
find the length of the two sides and final angle
OTHER METHODS
Contours and form lines
Use of grid references
Use of place names
