Logic Control for Double and Single Engine Operation

CAT 6040
General Information (Main Pump System)

The main pumps are four variable displacement axial piston

pumps in a swashplate design. Each pump is mounted on the
pump drive gearbox which is driven by the engine. The pumps
supply oil for the implement and travel functions.

The main pumps work in open circuit, which means that the
hydraulic oil flows from the tank to the pumps, and then flows
to the consumers through directional control valves for
connecting and traveling functions. The oil will then flow back
through the directional control valves and back to the hydraulic
tank.

The output flow of the pump is proportional to the drive speed

and the displacement of the pump. The flow can be changed
by controlling the angle of the swashplate. Increasing the
swashplate angle will increase offset, decreasing the angle will
result in decreased offset. The angle of travel of the
swashplate is controlled by proportional valves in the pilot
manifold.

Main Pump

The four main pumps (1) for the accessory and drive train circuits are axial piston variable displacement pumps in a swashplate design. A drive unit consists of
two main pumps (1).

Each main pump (1) is equipped with a pressure control regulator (2) actuated by a range of control pressure. At certain control pressures at the X1 pilot control
port (8) of the pressure control regulator (2), the main pump swashplate (1) is turned to full flow or turned back to flow " zero".

The pressure control regulator (2) is actuated by a variable pilot pressure, controlled from an electric proportional valve. This proportional valve is electrically
regulated from a drive controller.

Function
The control pressure required to drive the swash plate of the pump is adapted from the high-pressure channel of the pump. The control pressure is constantly
working in the chamber (5) of the servo piston (3). At a certain operating pressure, the chamber (5) is controlled by pressure from the pilot control port X2 (7)
by a pressure channel of the auxiliary circuit.

At the same time, the pressure control regulator (2) is actuated by the pilot pressure control of the proportional valve at the pilot control port X1 (8). Due to this
control, the chamber (6) of the piston of the servo (3) will be connected to the tank line. The main pump swashplate (1) will tilt to the full angle and generate
maximum output volume.

If the pilot pressure at pilot control port X1 (8) is reduced due to a load limit control factor, the pressure control regulator (2) will be spring-loaded to the neutral
position. Chambers (5) and (6) of the servo piston (3) will become an interface. Due to the different pressing surfaces of the servo piston (3), the pressing force
in the chamber (6) will be dominant. The angle of the main pump swashplate (1) will be controlled back to the NEUTRAL position. The holes (4) limit the control
speed of the swash plate of the main pump (1).
6040 HMS – Travel Supply – Both Engines running

The main pumps oil flows through the high-

pressure filters in the highpressure distribution
blocks to the logic valves.

The logic valves ensure that the travel function

has priority over the implement functions and
then direct oil from both main pumps to the travel
control valves. The travel control valves direct the
oil through the rotor (swivel) to the travel motors.

The travel motors rotate the final drives, which

multiply torque to drive the
tracks.

The hydraulic system main relief valves (3) limit

pressure spikes in the main hydraulic system pressure
to approximately 380 bar.

Logic Solenoid Valve -2Y21 – Status Conditions

The logic solenoid valve is located to the left of the high pressure distribution block and is supplied with high pressure oil
from the main pumps. The function of the logic solenoid valve is to open or close the relevant logic valve.

The function of logic control is to ensure that the travel function has priority over the working equipment no matter if the
machine is in twin or single engine operation.

With the machine in twin engine operation the solenoid valve is de-energised, and in single engine operation, the solenoid
valve is energised.
