combination of n objects taken r at a time.(M10SPIIIc-2)

➢ Objective: To differentiate permutation from combination of n objects taken

r at a time.
➢ Title of Textbook/LM to Study: Mathematics Learners’ Module Grade 10
➢ Chapter: 6 Pages: 286-294 Topic: Permutation and Combination

Let Us Discover

This Simplified Self-Learning Module (SSLM) will help you understand more on
the concepts on permutation and combination but this time we are going to
differentiate permutation from combination given of n objects taken r at a time. You
are given some examples and activities for you to undergo for better understanding to
the lesson.
Think of the situations below. What’s the Difference?
Situation 1.” My fruit salad is a combination of apples, grapes and bananas”
Situation 2. “The combination of my cellphone pin code is 4720”
Which of the situations needs an order? Which do not?

Activity 1. Is Order Important?

Find out which of the following demonstrates the importance of ORDER. Write
YES if it is and NO if it is not.

_____ 1. Winning in a Math Jingle contest.

_____2. Forming triangles from 6 distinct points in which no 3 points are collinear
_____3. Entering the PIN (Personal Identification Number) of your cellphone
_____4. Five people on the basketball team
_____5. Opening a combination lock

Permutation refers to the different possible arrangements of sets of objects.
Combination refers to the number of ways of selecting from a set when the
order is not important.
It is very important to make the distinction between permutations and
combinations.

The basic difference between a combination and a permutation is that while

the former is just a way of selecting something, the latter is a way of selecting as
well as arranging it.

In permutation, order is important, it denotes relevant arrangement,

sequence, or line up and will answer the question, how many different arrangements
can be created from a given set of objects?
In combination, order is not important, it denotes irrelevant selection, group
and sample and will answer the question, how many different groups can be chosen
from a larger group of objects?

Example:
Suppose we have 4 books Math (M), Arts (A), TLE(T) and History(H) and we
are required to choose 3 from them and then arrange them on a shelf. This can be
done in the following ways:

Selecting objects Arranging the objects

MAT MAT, MTD, ATM, AMT, TMA, TAM
MAH MAH, MHA, AHM, AMH, HAM, HMA
MTD MTH, MHT, TMH, THM, HMT, HTM
ATD ATH, AHT, TAH, THA, HAT, HTA

Thus, there are 4 ways of choosing 3 books from 4 and there are 6 ways of
arranging the chosen books. The process of selecting things is called combination
and that of arranging things is called permutation.

Examples of combination:

1. Numbering in no particular order

2. Picking multiple objects in one draw
3. Forming of a particular committee from a number of athletes

Examples of permutation:

1. Ranking of students
2. Sequencing of events
3. Forming of numbers with the given digits

Let Us Try

Identify if the situation illustrates a combination or permutation.

a. Determine the top five winners from 6 contestants in a mathematics quiz bee.
Answer: Combination since choosing the top 5 winners has no order.

b. Castel and Joe are planning trips to three countries this year. There are 7
countries they would like to visit. One trip will be for one week, another for two
days, and the other for two weeks.
Answer: Permutation since the countries that they are planning to visit are
scheduled.
Identify whether the given situation is a permutation or combination. Write P if
permutation and C if combination on the blank provided before each number.
____________ 1. Choosing 3 household chores to do before breakfast.
____________ 2. Arranging 8 different potted plants from 12 potted plants.
____________ 3. In how many ways can 5 people arrange themselves in a row for a
picture taking?
____________ 4. You want to order your lunch from the school canteen which offers
meals consisting of 1 cup of rice, 1 meat dish, and 1 vegetable dish. How many choices
do you have if there are 3 choices of meat dishes and 2 choices of vegetable dishes?
____________ 5. Choosing 5 questions to answer out of 10 questions in a test.

Let Us Do

Activity 2. Identify Me!

In the situation/activity below, put a check (√) on column C if it is combination

and put a check (√) on column P if it is permutation.

Situation/Activity C P
1. Numbering in a particular order
3. Forming of numbers with the given digits
3. 4 people on the volleyball team
4.How can we arrange 10 students in a line to go on vaccination
this morning?
5. In how many ways can a group elect as President, Vice
President and Treasurer if they have 12 members?
6. How many codes can be formed in a lock requiring 4 unique
digits chosen from 6 to 9

3 GSC-CID-LRMS-ESSLM, v.r. 03.00, Effective June 14, 2021

7. How many 5-digit numbers are possible if no digits are
repeated
8. Eight runners join a race. In how many possible ways can
they be arranged as first, second, and third placers?
9. Selecting 8 people to form a Student Affairs Committee
10. You order a sandwich at a restaurant. You can choose 2
side dishes from a list of 8. How many combinations of side
dishes are possible?

Let Us Apply

You’ve been through with the previous activity. Here is an activity for you to
enhance your understanding on differentiating permutation and combination.

Direction: Identify whether the given situation is permutation or combination. Write

P if the situation is Permutation and C if Combination on the space
provided.

_______1. In how many ways can 12 people shakes hands?

_______2. How many groups of four can be formed out of ten people?
_______3. How many 4-digit numbers are possible if no digits are repeated?
_______4. How many sets of 5 question can be chosen from a list of 30
question?
_______5. If 8 numbered balls were be drawn from a bag with 20 balls, how
many unique batches of numbers can be drawn?
_______6. How many codes can be formed in a lock requiring 4 unique digits
chosen from 5 to 8?
_______7. In a lottery, each ticket has 6 one-digit numbers 0-9. What are your
chances of winning?
_______8. A person playing poker is dealt 5 cards. How many different hands
could the player have been dealt?
_______9. In how many ways can a group elect as President, Vice President
and Treasurer if they have 12 members?
_______10. In how many ways can 4 covid patients be assigned to 8 hospital
rooms so that each patient has a private room.
