Learning Competencies
• Solves problems involving permutations and combinations.

SOLVING PROBLEMS INVOLVING PERMUTATIONS AND COMBINATIONS

Permutation is an arrangement where order matters. Combinations is an arrangement where order does not
matter. Knowing their difference, you can now identify what type of problem is given and what solution to make.
Illustrative Example 1:
A local school board with 8 people needs to form a committee with three people. How many ways can this
committee be formed?

Illustrative Example 2:
A local school board with 8 people needs to form a committee with three different responsibilities. How many
ways can this committee be formed?

P(8,3) = 336 Simplify.

POINTS TO PONDER:

In each problem/situation, you can identify if it is permutation or combination based on its order. In permutation,
the arrangement or order is important and those in which order is not important is combination. You recalled the
Fundamental Counting Principle which is essential concepts in understanding permutations and combinations.
