When two or more quantities of same type of same units are compared, then one
quantity is what times of the other is called ratio.
Ex: Cost of a cycle is Rs.3000 and cost of a bike is Rs.45,000, then find the ratio of
the cost price.
The ratio: 3000 : 45000 = 1 : 15.
Thus, we can say that cost of the cycle is 1/15 times the cost of the bike.
Note: A ratio remains the same if both antecedent and consequent are multiplied
or divided by the same non-zero number,

If ratio is a : b, then (a + b)

2 100 = 100 = 40%.
Ex: In ratio 2 : 3, then ( 2 + 3) 5
Equal to Ratio
⮚ If 3a = 4b, then a : b = 4 : 3

: = 4 : 5,
⮚ If 2 3 then a : b = (4 × 2) : (3 × 5) = 8 : 15.
Fraction to Ratio
⮚ If a, is 3/4th of b, then a : b = 3 : 4
⮚ If a, is 3/4th of (a + b), then a : (a + b) = 3 : 4
⇒ a : b = 3 : (4 – 3) = 3 : 1 [ (a + b) = 4 and a = 3, then b = (a +
b) – a = 4 – 3 = 1]
2. Proportion:
If two ratios are equal, we say that they are in proportion and use the symbol “::”
or “=” to equate the two ratios.
